♪ ♪ >> announcer: now "inside edition" with deborah norville. ♪ ♪ >> deborah: hello, everybody, and thank you for joining us. spring break is just getting started for most students but already there is tragedy. this university of pittsburgh student has vanished on this photo is believed to be the last picture of her taken before she disappeared. she was on holiday in the dominican republic and while officials there suspect she may have drowned, her family fears she may have met with foul play. alison hall has our report. >> the parents of a 20-year-old college student missing on spring break say they have growing suspicion that she may have been kidnapped. the pretty university of pittsburgh junior was last seen walking down a beach at 4:50 a.m. in the dominican republic with five girlfriends, celebrating spring break. this is believed to be the last photo taken of this premed student. she was wearing the same brown bikini when she went missing.

at some point, the girlfriends returned to their hotel at the disorder. she decided to stay on the beach with a guy described by authorities as a stranger. as helicopters search the blue waters for any sign of a body, the young man who was with her reportedly told police they were swimming when a large wave may have swept her away. >> he also told police that she believed she had followed him out of the ocean before he fell asleep on the beach. that young man is seen on surveillance video leaving the beach area four hours later at 9:55 a.m. >> sudiksha's parents live in virginia but are now in point o'connor. her family says in a statement, while it is possible that sudiksha drowned, there is growing suspicion that there may be a crime, specifically the possibility of kidnapping. it is four days and if she was in water, she would likely have been in short. we are asking to and investigate

multiple options like kidnapping or abduction. the resort where sudiksha was staying was in the news for other reasons. a spring breakers described deplorable conditions. that included no running water, substandard food, and blackouts. they used cell phones to light their way. >> anything that you could have imagined gone wrong went wrong. >> how would you describe your spring break trip? >> whole red, a nightmare, absolutely terrible. i was walking in the hallway back to my room and i could not see more than 6 inches in front of me. someone could have been standing a foot in front of me and i would not have seen them. kind of scary. >> the power outages left guests unable to enter their rooms with their electronic keys, forcing many to sleep on beach chairs outdoors. is that why sudiksha was on the beach with her friends so late at night? it is just one of many questions as a search for the university of pittsburgh student continues. >> deborah: sudiksha konanki's girlfriends were supposed to return to the states on friday but they have remained to try to help with the search. was it an accident on the track

or was it a runner trying to eliminate the competition? video cocked the moment that high school runner was hit in the head with a relay baton. now both teens are talking about what happened. >> it is shocking video. a high school track star appears to deliberately strike her opponent on the head with a baton. it happened during the 200-meter relay at the virginia state high school league champions championships. you can see kayla tucker come from behind and pass another runner who then appears to clobber her in the head with a baton. she grabs her head and falls to the ground. >> as we got around the curb, she kept bumping me on my arm and then finally, we got off the curb, i slowly started passing her and that is when she hit me with a baton and i fell off the track. i could feel a headache coming up. >> 16-year-old kayla was treated for concussion an end possible skull fracture.

her opponent claims it was an accident. "i know my attentions and i would never hit someone on purpose, she says in an interview today. my baton got stuck. i lost my balance, and when i pumped my arms again, she got hit. not everyone is buying it. >> that does not look like an accident, what we see on the video. looks very intentional. >> her parents wants an apology from the high school senior and her coach. >> they were watching the video at the event but no one apologized or came to check on her. >> deborah: the virginia high school league is now investigating. meantime, the parents of the girl who was hit save the other girl's father and the athletic director both called to apologize. questions today over how the wife of oscar-winning actor gene hackman was sickened by the rare but deadly haunted virus. the medical examiner revealed that she did die from hantavirus which is usually transported by

had happened was mind-blowing. >> ryan, did you think you were going to lose your daughter? >> when they told us that she was receiving cpr, we were praying that god would save her. >> debbie also nearly lost her life after contracting hantavirus from mouse droppings inside her chicken coop on her ranch in montana. >> i was having trouble, shortness of breath. i think i started developing really severe back pain and neck pain. >> the hantavirus is primarily spread through urine and droppings left behind by wild rodents, particularly small deer mice. the virus can be found in contaminated dust in the air, and it can be a problem in both rural and urban areas. >> social media is filled with videos of mice invading kitchens, eating spotless ones. giancarlo of this pest control shows us how easy it is for a mouse to invade your home. >> mice can fit through a
