at the corner of ninth and howard to show us what happened. heather? >> this had the potential to be a real disaster. >> reporter: that bus was overheating so the driver pulled into this gas station right there between pump eight and nine which as you can see our boarded-up tonight. the smoke that was coming from the front of the vehicle quickly turned to flames. many people thought this place was going to blow. >> this is what people saw when they looked out the window. smoke, shuttle bus on fire, gas pumps to the left and right. >> getting bigger and bigger. >> reporter: those working at the burger king at the chevron station watched nervously as smoke and flames swirled around them. >> it's not going out of control -- i told customer here, get out of here now. >> the bus is operated by san francisco-based trans metro and was an route to pick up the employees at a software company.

fire officials he pulled in after the bus started overheating. >> when you open up the hood, he thought it was overheating. he walked into the gas station to have a mechanic come out. in the period of time he walked away, smoke started to fill the front of the vehicle. we noticed there was a fire. >> reporter: the under countrified dryer -- unidentified driver caused panic for some in the area. >> we need to evacuate. the gas station is on fire. we left the building, heard an street. and got out of the way. saw this big column of smoke. >> reporter: it could've been disastrous. >> immediately i went outside, pushed the shuttle bus. >> reporter: chevron assistant manager christina bus tour's turned off the gas to the pumps avoiding a monstrous blaze. >> the first thing you're going >> reporter: employees and customers were ordered to leave

control the flames. the bus was a charred ruin. >> you can tell that the bus is totaled. >> reporter: in fact, it was. i'm told the driver had just picked up the vehicle so no passengers were on board. i spoke with the supervisor at trans metro. he told me he wasn't aware of any issues. in fact, frank, he told me last week it was inspected and passed. >> heather, obviously the gas station suffered some damage there. any idea how long until the gas station reopens? >> they are going to be checking the rest of the pumps for any damage. obviously those two pumps behind me are going to be out of commission for some time. also going to check the awning. there was concern about water damage. they want to make sure it's okay before they give the okay to reopen. >> heather, thank you. now to the peninsula and new developments involving a runaway dump truck that plowed into a home in san carlos.

night to remove the big rig. it was carrying an estimated 80 tons of dirt. the graph -- the crash caused extensive damage to the home. ktvu's azenith smith is live at the scene and tells us thankfully no one was home at the time but the cleanup there is far from over. azenith? >> reporter: julie, we just checked with pg&e. 142 customers are without power and this is why. it has become quite a sight, around 9:00, crews were able to get this be grayed out. you can see it now upright and there's a lot of damage from the front of this truck, behind that truck is a heavily damaged home. the homeowners were not home at the time. they are on vacation. coming home to this tonight, and what's crazy, this is not the first time a car has crashed into this house. >> this is the worst one i ever seen. >> reporter: neighbors are

electricity are packing up. >> we have no power and they don't know when the roads are going to open up. >> reporter: 18-wheeler loaded with dirt slammed into a home on windsor drive. it happened just after 1:00 this afternoon. chp says the driver failed to stop at the intersection. lost control, knocking out power and telephone lines in its path. >> a big rumble coming down the hill. anticipated a big truck coming down the hill. but this was a little louder and faster. >> this happened two years ago. so they had remodeled everything and so of course i rushed over. and i'm amazed. >> reporter: the home belonged to the parents on vacation. two years ago and is to be with bad breaks crashed into her parents bathroom, nearly missing her mother. this time the damage is more extensive. videos of the truck taking out the master bedroom and living room. >> whole bedroom is basically in the backyard right now. >> reporter: chp has identified

of san jose who told them his brakes weren't working properly. he was rushed to stanford hospital. >> they need to drive carefully when driving this area especially because it's downhill. there is a stop sign at the intersection. so they need to be more careful. >> reporter: it's unclear if the big repeated a special neighborhood. >> destry, the neighbors will tell you people go through the stop sign all the time. they go too fast, no one stops. >> reporter: again crews are slowly towing this truck away, but as you see the damage, it's hard to believe that someone was able to survive this. thankfully, luckily, the driver is okay and that home has a lot of damage again, the master bedroom and bathroom were wiped out. as of now the driver has not been sighted. and chp tells me they are investigating to see if it was his fault, if the brakes were

other mechanical failure at the time. julie? >> such a scary situation and a lot of work to do. azenith, thank you. now to developing news from east oakland where police are trying to piece together clues in a shooting that sent a woman to the hospital. sky fox was over the scene at 105th and rafe street. the injury to the women are not considered to be life- threatening. as for motive, we heard reports shooting happened during a robbery and two men took off running from the scene but no official word from police. in the north bay investigators are working to identify a man's body that washed ashore near bodega bay. someone walking on the beach called 911 about 8:15 to report a badly decomposed body in the water just south of salmon creek. there is suspicion the body could be that of missing attorney stephen mitchell. his car was discovered near a beach in general on february 14. investigators also say he left a note indicating he was going to commit suicide. mitchell represented sonoma

the family of 13-year-old andy lopez. he was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy in 2013 while holding an airsoft gun that looked a lot like a real assault rifle. sad news tonight about a missing ski instructor who prompted a massive search more than a month ago. authorities say they found the body of 22-year-old carson may at sugar bowl resort. two search and rescue teams took their dogs to a spot where carson's cell phone last pinged and they found his body under five feet of snow. a previous search of that area had been hindered by treacherous weather. may was reported missing on january 16 after an afternoon of skiing. new developments from a new york courtroom that could have an impact on the looming privacy battle between apple and the fbi. a judge in brooklyn ruled the justice department cannot compel apple to unlock an iphone in a routine drug dealing case. this is a similar legal issue to the case that's currently making headlines.

executive says the ruling bodes well for apple's fight with the u.s. government over the iphone that was used by one of the terrorists in san bernardino massacre. representatives from apple and the fbi have set to appear tomorrow to give testimony to the judiciary committee over encryption and privacy. now to the race for president, tomorrow is super tuesday with hundreds of delegates up for grabs, if history is our guide, it could go a long way to determining the eventual nominees. jana katsuyama is here now to show us what's at stake. jenna? >> reporter: there's a lot. a dozen states shown here in green will be holding primaries or caucuses and awarding delegates. tonight could decide who stays in the race and who gets out with strong showings by outsiders in both parties, that will make super tuesday unexpectedly competitive. bernie sanders was in minnesota

and a chance of rain out there. police in richmond tell us they are worried about retaliation after a 14-year-old boy was shot and killed today. ktvu's amber lee has been talking to people who knew the young victim and joins us now live at police headquarters with the very latest. amber? >> reporter: police say the team's killing was targeted. his friends tell me it's a sober reminder about what it's like to grow up in richmond's

at dusk as the sky glowed orange, friends lit candles as they gathered for a memorial for 14-year-old a xavier mcclanahan, a boy they grew up with. >> he was my bro. we kicked it. we did a lot. >> reporter: they left stuffed animals for him, symbols of their childhood. cut short suddenly. >> he not one of those hotheads, i'm hard, i can do this. he was a good soul to be around. >> reporter: someone shot xavier along this bike path not far from kennedy high school where he was a freshman. police say the 14-year-old was shot multiple times and died at the scene. they say he was targeted but have not said why. >> he never sassed his mama or nothing. but you know what, you on the streets, anything may happen. you know? anything may happen. >> reporter: one man who spoke

identify him says he saw the gunman. >> i look at my gate, up the street, the guy with the rifle was jumping in the car and taking off. >> reporter: officers and a k-9 unit searched the area looking for clues. they did not find the shooter. >> nowadays, you lucky to see the age of 18. let alone 21. >> reporter: friends say being black and living in richmond, street violence is their reality. >> i have times when i think that tomorrow could be my last day. >> reporter: this 15-year-old said she saw xavier this morning as they headed for school. she took the bus, he walked. friends say they suspect someone who knew xavier lured him to the bike path and killed him. they say they don't know why. >> we don't want this. we didn't sign up for this. >> reporter: i spoke with a xavier's principal and former teacher, both described him as a good kid. police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrests of the shooter.

fox 2 news. in san francisco, the health department gave an update today to the dismantling of a tent city on division street. officials say they are pleased many of homeless people who were sleeping on the sidewalk environments. still there are a number of refusing to leave. of the 76 people that the health department had contact with yesterday, only six agreed to relocate to the city's new pier 80 shelter where there are still about 20 vacant beds. a little drama to report in the renaming of historic landmarks in yosemite. park employees will be covering up the old signs as of midnight , all part of a fierce legal battle. over the weekend someone stole the famous sign for the hotel. park rangers say that is a federal offense. it will be known now as the majestic yosemite hotel. the other hotel and the lodge at the falls will become half dome village and yosemite valley lodge.

pass ski area will be called half dome village and yosemite ski and snowboard area. recent storms and high surf at the ocean beach have exposed old ones that have been buried beneath the sand for years. ktvu's tom vacar tells us some of the structures date back a century. >> reporter: the storm driven seas that have eroded san francisco's ocean beach all winter long recently uncovered an old stone center -- stone stairway. it's not the first time but it is fairly rare that has sometimes been much more revealing. >> one time i saw the wreckage of the ship that i haven't seen before. just the remains. like large beams. >> reporter: one resident had never seen the seawall. >> things that were not here before. you know, that were under the sand. >> reporter: make no mistake, here at the street, one must be very careful.

just as concerning? sneaker waves. the city replenishes eroded sand here annually. but rising sea level seems to be doing more damage. >> erosion is working. seems to be working quicker nowadays, but then again, in time, things he wrote. >> reporter: fact is, erosion is a fact of life out here. and always has been. the effect, 20,000 years ago the west coast was 27 miles more west. the place we now call the farallon islands. >> once a year, there is maintenance program. but i think they need to do it more often. >> reporter: staffers are putting 100,000 historic photos online. quite a few are of ocean beach at the time the recently uncovered steps were built in the late 1920s and the seawall built in the early 1940s. >> we've seen in our historical

riled up. chp is under pressure to stop a wave of freeway shootings in the richmond area. there have been seven car to car shootings since early november. the latest what happened just after 1:00 a.m. on saturday on westbound 80 near hilltop drive. police say someone shot at a silver jeep driven by 39-year- old leslie graham, jr. the jeep went off the road and ended up at the bottom of an embankment where graham was pronounced dead. investigators have talked to people who witnessed the accident. what they would like to hear from now are drivers about what happened right before the accident. the mayor of hercules says he's fed up and doesn't feel the chp is doing enough.

target shooting. the freeway is for transportation. i expect the chp to do their due diligence and protect our public. >> police say the victim had strong ties, gang ties in north richmond. of the seven freeway shootings, two people have died. now to the south bay where preliminary hearing got under way today for three so -- santa clara deputies who are accused of beating to death a mentally ill inmate. ann rubin reports it was the prosecutor's first chance to present evidence in this case. >> reporter: the family of michael tyree was shaken, his sister brought to tears. this was the first time they had seen the photos. the attorney representing them spoke outside the courthouse. >> i mean, you saw a naked dan inmate who had been clearly dragged from his cell. >> reporter: the images presented during the hearing showed tyree, an inmate as santa clara county jail, covered in what appeared to be vomit and feces. prosecutors contend he was

rafael rodriguez, matthew ferus and jury lubricant, the three officers tasked with watching him stand accused. >> it's horrible, it's even more horrible that it happened. >> reporter: this prosecutor spent much of the day laying out the timeline of events. the focus on the window between 1030 -- 10:38 and 11:overnight. that's when investigators believe the beating must have occurred. it wasn't until 12 at 12 that the call came out for a man down. >> what they were 20 to show by the time is that michael tyree was in a locked cell when the three deputies went into that cell block, so nobody else but those three deputies could have entered his cell. >> reporter: attorneys for the defendants raised the topic of cell popping the idea that a silver might appear locked when it isn't. they also questioned the accuracy of the timeline. still they don't need to mount a defense yet. the proceeding determines whether the case will be bound over for trial.

competition. all lanes of highway 101 are back open at this hour after a multivehicle crash sent for people to the hospital. sky fox was overhead shortly after that accident. it happened at 6:30 near north san pedro road. officials say five vehicles were involved. the accident caused all northbound lanes to be closed for about an hour. that caused a major backup on highway 101. drivers know bay area longer. >> the latest numbers bear that out. 92 million cars a year across the bay bridge, up 3% in the past five years. 40 million cars cross the golden gate, up 4%. 125 million riders a year take bart, up 25%. new at 10, ken wayne is at the larkspur ferry terminal with the transportation revolution on the bay that could help ease the crushing commute here.

>> there once was a golden age of ferry service on the bay. now for the first time in decades, there's an effort no traffic jams here. the bay is wide open. the few boats on it are packed. >> san francisco is the largest landlocked harbor on earth. people remarkably say it's the only great harbor that has almost no ferry service. >> reporter: the bay area council recently led a delegation to seattle. >> it was at first to see how incredible their system is. >> find out how ferry service can be improved here. >> fairies once ruled the bay. >> reporter: thousands of commuters hopped off the boat and onto waiting streetcars at the ferry building. today, the bridges that killed ferry service are jammed. as is bart. now, ferry riders are back in record numbers. >> is there enough capacity to meet demand right now?

there's not. we're carrying 400 people on a trip and we're leaving people behind. >> reporter: puget sound has the largest fleet in the country. carrying more than 23 million passengers a year compared to 6 million here. ferry service is expanding slowly but new service from richmond comes in two years, treasure island four years later. the hope is to double ferry capacity by 2025. that's nine long years. >> yes. we are a little bit. >> reporter: the director of the port of redwood city has been trying for years to get a ferry connection. >> they've included it in their plans. but we have been frustrated by the pace at which they pursued it. there telling us that if they started tomorrow it would take seven years. >> reporter: but they're not starting tomorrow. critics say the water emergency transportation authority that oversees most public ferry service needs to reinvent

operating catamarans from smaller marinas in berkeley and emeryville, maybe even san leandro and simona. but there are environmental reviews and red tape. >> it's ridiculous, the traffic that we have here. and so whatever it takes to get more votes on the bay and get more people off the roads, that's what we're going to try and two. >> reporter: more boats could be newer, faster, cleaner, maybe even all electric or hybrid both. frank and julie, the golden age of ferry service may yet return to the bay area. >> i'm sure a lot of drivers would appreciate that. ken wayne, thank you. another lawsuit has been filed in an effort to derail the golden state warriors arena project at san francisco's mission bay. the latest lawsuit filed friday by the mission bay alliance. the mother of a pediatric patient who receives treatment at ucsf children's hospital at mission bay, opponents say arena traffic could affect how

the lawsuit argues that the project violates zoning laws created by a voter approved initiative that caps the space allocations. the project calls for two office towers within the arena complex. major league baseball players got a reminder from the league and the players union about the use of smokeless tobacco. one-page letters were put in spring training lockers reminding the ballplayers that chewing tobacco is banned at at&t park in san francisco along with dodger stadium in los angeles and fenway park in boston because of local ordinances enacted in each of those cities since last city -- season. the medal of honor was given to a navy seal who risked his life to save an american citizen overseas. >> today's ceremony is unique. a rare opportunity for the american people to get a glimpse of a special breed of warrior that so often serves in the shadows. >> edward byers took part in a

just arou the coast guard is temporarily suspending to search for a young man off the coast. crews spent much of the afternoon searching for him. last seen struggling in the surf at dunes beach shortly after 2:00. the coast guard dispatched a helicopter but called off the search at sunset. the search is expected to resume at sunrise tomorrow. a tenant advocacy group is gathering signatures for a november ballot measure that would bring rent-controlled to the city of alameda. number -- the measure would send -- would set limits tying them to a regional consumer price index. they recently approved a new set of protections including limiting rent increases to once per year. but the tenant group says those steps don't go far enough

predetermined cap on the amount of the rent increases. u.s. stocks finished in the red on the last day of february. the dow closed down 123, nasdaq was off 32 points, the s&p lost 15. the market has now posted declines four months in a row mostly due to the slump in oil prices. some delivery drivers for amazon prime have apparently won their battle to be classified as employees and subcontractors. they work for nl a company called skivvies that provides delivery service. amazon reportedly pressured skivvies to hire the drivers full-time. not clear if the lawsuit is settled but it's one of several similar cases. the uber case has been the most visible and goes to trial in june. the film festival is coming to the south bay tomorrow, drawing big hollywood names. a total of 240 films will be shown at three different theaters in san jose. the festival kicks off with a

family running out new at 10, a martinez family is racing against the clock, trying to save their daughter, melody, who has an inoperable brain tumor. they hope to raise enough money to get the child to england for an expensive treatment not available in the u.s. debora

>> reporter: martinez is rallying around this little girl. her diagnoses came just over a month ago. >> she had complained her legs were sore. then the blurred vision was odd. >> reporter: four-year-old melody's achy legs, growing pains, her doctor said. >> feels like it's not real. >> reporter: by mid-january, a scan revealed why she was so tired and by then having trouble walking. a deadly brain tumor. >> basically no cure for it. >> reporter: a little girl always healthy given a terminal diagnosis. melody's aggressive cancer is inoperable because it's in the brainstem. it kills a few hundred children in the u.s. each year. >> we want her back to normal. we're not going to give up. >> reporter: life has changed dramatically. melody makes daily trips for radiation and hope that might slope her tumor. next possibly a clinical trial

promising they've been told a treatment option in england. >> where they actually put catheters into her skull where they can deliver the medication and actually gets directly applied to the tumor. >> reporter: a biopsy suggests melody's tumor right respond to the uk method. not yet approved by the fda. but the travel and treatment will cost close to $100,000 if the university of bristol accepts her. kaiser won't cover care outside the u.s. so the family is grateful for community support. a gofundme page is about a third of the way to their goal. optimism comes from melody who will be five in may. >> when she starts feeling sad, everyone feels sad but she's not

that's tuesday. here comes thursday, big difference. you see the floes onshore, 7:00 a.m., valley fog, coastal fog and then right there, 9:00 wednesday night, looks like it rains pretty focused on the north bay. san jose sees nothing but at the north bay, a quarter inch, maybe a little bit more in some places. that's not the main event. the main event is more towards friday, saturday and sunday. the forecast, throwing some numbers down, it's going to be bull's-eye over the next several days where they could see five, six inches of rain in some places. down in arvada, that's the cutoff point. beyond this, beyond saturday, there's more inclement weather coming. so anything we get is going to be good. this will be a good dose of rain through the weekend. and then next week looks to be wet as well, promises to be wet. temperatures cool down a little bit.

a part as we move forward, 10 years in, first day in the big leagues, as a brotherhood, there's a camaraderie and a way that we go about it. this is interesting, make no mistake about it, coach jim harbaugh very much in the honeymoon period of his relationship with university. but you watch, his day will come and he likes to push the envelope of course. push people's buttons. that's doing what he does. this week, harbaugh has flown his entire team to florida to work out during their spring break. opponents are ripping the move for among other things because it's conducting workouts at an academy where elite athletes also show their stuff. theoretically, those youngsters will be exposed to michigan football even though harbaugh cannot recruit on this trip, when asked about this concern, we'll get vintage harbaugh. >> you can see where their concern would be, right?
