s. police shoot and kill a suspect as they say he attacked them with a knife. what we know so far. >> and someone got away with murdering this person. how police are now hoping you can help crack this case. plus could we be seeing more self-driving cars on the roads soon? the community open house held by soon? thank you for joining us for "fox 10 news" at 5:00, we begin tonight with a deadly police-involved shooting that we are now learning more about tonight. yeah, two men are dead and a phoenix police officer is injured after a homicide last night followed by another shooting very early this morning.

details. this homicide happened around 8:30 last night and police telling that after this they went to what was believed to be the suspect in that shooting's home and tell us they met with that suspect there and he pulled a knife on them and he cut one of the officer's hands and that's when that officer shot and killed him. >> phoenix police responding to a shooting last night around 8:30. near 75th drive and camelback. when they arrived they found 48-year-old martin lopez mes home with several gunshot woundses. he was transported to the hospital where he later died. >> as the officers are on the scene and gathering this information, they are able to find out that the suspect in this investigation is actually known to the victim and the victim's family. >> they track down that suspect, 38-year-old reuben strand to his home near 43rd avenue and indian school. police obtained a search warrant and went inside. >> they entered a bedroom and when they entered the bedroom

with a knife and at that point he cut the lead officer that was going into the room. >> police say that lead officer who is 35 years old and served on the department for 14 years is cut on his hand by strand. police say that officer defended himself and shot strand. >> the suspect has been pronounced deceased here at the apartment complex. >> and the officer involved in this incident did suffer injuries to his hand. he was taken to the hospital for treatment where he received stitches but okay. reporting live, danielle miller, "fox 10 news." thank you, daniel. a different deadly officer involved shooting unfolding in mesa last night. mesa police say officers were trying to contact a homicide suspect when this shooting happened. now this is near country club and mckellips. the suspect was wanted in connection with the shooting death of a 55-year-old on thursday. the officer say they caught up to the suspect as he was driving

that suspect according to police, sped up and tried to get away. but before he could do that, officer says they cornered the vehicle and forced him to get out. >> they knew he was armed and dangerous. and during that contact they perceived a threat and three officers fired their duty weapons striking the suspect. >> the three officers who fired their weapons were all mesa police officers. there was one other person in the car. that person was taken in f questioning. the name of the suspect has not been released. police are seeking justice for a man killed back in april asking the public for any information to give closure to his family. police say they got a call about shots fired near 31 avenue and baseline early in the morning around 2:30 that april day. when they got there, they found robert james smith lying in the street with several gunshot wounds. two days later he passed away. >> we are hoping that somebody has information about who did

involved or maybe even what led up to this. >> police say he leaves behind a daughter and they want anyone with information to call silent witness. a phoenix home owner and police are looking for two robbers who went into a man's garage and stole a bunch of stuff. you see surveillance video here. this happened near 30th avenue and deer valley road a couple of weeks ago. the home owner has this footage of the theft happening. police say it was about 12:30 in the morning. >> they do it in such a way that they are almost casual about it they brought flash from flashlights. they are looking at items and loading their arms and then they leave. >> the police also say it's a great idea to keep your garage door closed as well as the door leading from your garages into your home locked. >> another burglary case to tell you about. that police need your help solving this one near 21 avenue and tomorrow mches it happened last month.

>> when it comes to their self-driving cars, jennifer, the head of google's project says they get a lot of questions. the most common one is why work on this? to which she as a good answer. >> and the number one is safety. here in the u.s. 35,000 people die every year on our roads which is just not acceptable. >> today is a chance for chandler to get up close and personal with the google cars they spotted on their roads. >> i think people are just learning a little bit more about us. they are talk to members of the team tomorrow hear about the cars they have been seeing driving around their community. >> the tech giant hand picked chandler as a city they wanted to unveil the program in because of good road conditions, weather and their reputation. >> our track record with other tech firms really helped us secure it. we saw this as a real critical component of what we are trying to build in chandler. >> a partnership the mayor of chandler is pretty proud of. >> this is the start of a partnership like all

here, but we will continue to work with google and bring in other things that there is a possibility. we will do the best we can to make sure the driver of the car program is a successful program in chandler, arizona. google says the cars are a no-brainer. >> self-driving cars. they don't get distracted like many of us do, unfortunately, while we are driving. they don't get drunk. they don't get tired or angry and so the benefit is just really huge. not just for those who can't drive but really forll >> besides not having emotions, the car can also restore a sense of independence. for someone with health issues and impairment or even just getting older. >> an older person and i'm really -- i know when you lose your license you become dependent on other people and that's the reason older people don't want to give up their driver's license. they lose their independencewatch the self-driving cars, we will be able to stay independent way longer.

across america-- a new mexico police officer is across america, a new mexico police officer dies after he is shot during a routine traffic stop. officer jose chavez was shot as he approached a car in hatch, new mexico. three suspects fled the scene and drove to a nearby rest stop. now according to the sheriff's department, they then shot another person in carjacking. all three of the suspects have been taken into police custody as of tonight. >> a florida woman is in critical condition after she was bitten by an alligator. the 49-year-old woman was air lifted to the hospital after her hand was bit in northwest broward, florida. officials say the victim was bitten on the hand as she reached her hand into the water for a can that she had dropped officials say that gator was

evacuations and rescues evacuations and rescues are underway across louisiana. days of torrential rainfall swamping that state causing widespread flooding. the grrp says well over 1,000 people have been rescued in their homes and cars. two people have been killed in these storms. >> we have record levels of

the warm ones there coming in at 111. we do see some moisture mainly on the eastern portion of our state. want to zoom in and show you where we are seeing some of that rain right here right along the i-40. they were seeing a little bit of those storms. they are starting to dissipate as they move their way into the south and they were just a few showers just a little bit east -- or excuse me, west of flagstaff for this evening. zoom in because we are tracking this storm cell that's bringing quite a bit of rain north of black canyon city and east of the i-17. as it does move its way closer to the i-17. we are keeping our eyes on this if you are traveling up and down the i-17, this afternon you might run into a few trouble spots with that storm. we haven't hit our high temperature for the day. our normal is 105. we were talking about it's 107 so a few degrees above normal but not -- nowhere near our record set back in 2012, 115 degrees back on that date. let's talk about today -- tonight and then tomorrow. 83 for our overnight low and

silicon valley internet mogul is going to jail for a year for violating his probation in a domestic violence case. 34-year-old man was sentenced in san francisco. he pleaded guilty in 2014 to misdemeanor charges of battery and domestic violence. prosecutors said surveillance footage showed him punching and kicking his then girlfriend but a judge ruled the footage was improperly obtained and not allowed as evidence. now prosecutors say he violated his probation by attac he made $300 million in 2007 when he sold his digital advertising company to yahoo! as nasa's shuttle program turns 40 years old, astronauts, scientists and engineers are celebrating a new space milestone. even as they look back to the founding of the program. fox news reporter john scott has more. >> lift off. the final liftoff of atlantis,
