5:40 pm
kids at a young age about police officers and what they do on a daily basis. and it's always fun when there is a little competition. >> it takes everyone involved to make sure that we have a safe and productive society so we are out here to connect with the kids and show them our human side. obviously we can see their human side theches are great kids. >> courtney griffin, "fox 10 news." and they say they like to continue events like this multiple times throughout the year. >> what did we the cards raiders game, the good and not so good and you will hear from the head coach along with players on assessing pre-season game number one, plus we check in with the seahawks, a little football.
5:41 pm
5:42 pm
(jude)bruce arians said all along one long drive for his first team offense would be along one long drive for his bruce arians said give me one long drive and that will be fine for pre-season game number one and that's what happened
5:43 pm
the first string offense against the raiders. the place was jumping. chandler jones put them on both sides. you saw him on the left and right side. carson palmer nice drive it was a nine play drive and one of the highlights of that second and two right here going down field, that deep end route to michael floyd and the offense was running. i want you to watch carefully the move that, the juke by david right there that's against the db. that's 6'2", about 231 against a season he should have if he stays healthy. turnovers, turnovers and turnovers. jj nelson, watch him get stripped by cory toomer, number 54 for the raiders. never want to see that in pre-season action. as a return man so i'm sure that will be a topic for discussion when the cards get back to practice. as for drew stanton, didn't look sharp. you get most of your wrap reps as a backup quarterback.
5:44 pm
it -- palmer looked good and had some moments as far as the back up quarterback the. brandon williams the young corner from a&m it was baptism under fire. they went after him and consistently went after him. you can see right here the touchdown pass to andre holmes, 26. he is talented and athletic and has a lot to learn. andre ellington jumped out. he doesn't have to carry the load any more and look at this gainer right here. he you see that burst, that big play capability for number 38 now entering his fourth year. play fake and then stanton to troy nicholas. they have been waiting for that big physical tight end number 87 out of notre dame to finally bruise his way toward the goal line and he had a few plays last night if he can stay healthy, andre ellington powers to the goal line. running backs look good. johnson and williams had some moments later in that game.
5:45 pm
overall the assessment on the front liners very positive. a good things about the ball, i like the way we started. i thought our good players played well. got them out quickly. they were successful and showed up ready to play. i thought the individually there were some good things with the young players. although collectively it was not very good. the turnovers obviously offensively killed us given short fields. and not responding to hold them to the field goal and giving up easy touchdowns. two long runs totally out of gaps and missed a tackle. not really concerned with those injury-wise. we came out really clean a couple of bumps and bruises but no missed time come sunday morning practice. so it was a good beginning. >> we had some good plays. the big play to mike was big. the big run by dave was good.
5:46 pm
grind from here and we still have a long way to go. >> i'm happy to be out there. being able to have an opportunity to go out and make plays and this is just the beginning. this is just pre-season. it doesn't count or anything like that so i'm looking forward to the first game. >> fun. it feels good to be part of the squad finally. being out there with the the guys and hearing my name come out of the tunnel that was fun. learning stuff from playing in the game. learning to be calm and to get so riled up and excited and anxious and stuff. that's what i'm trying to figure out. >> didn't play much. just nice to get my feet wet. played fast. played hard. first probably just the competition, somebody other than yourselves and it's always a little different and little more exciting and little more fun. obviously we didn't the way we wantd to. there was a lot of good things
5:47 pm
really good enough. so we are watching the tape and learn from it. i'm excited to see the tape because it's hard to see it from the sideline. you have to really watch the film. i want to see which young guy stood out and really stepped up and made a difference. >> great onfield shots by our sports photographer. as for brandon williams this young man's talented. athletic but still learning the position and are a rookie. let's be fair. he has a mental tough itness about him but they and they wanted to test him and you look at the subtleties of 9 position, being able to play press coverage and look, he is against some of the top young receivers in the game. cooper is an absolute stud. you whiff here and you learn and you come back and get back to work and certainly you can see this raider team was going after number 26. made some nice plays. a guy that will kind of get it over time. you have to be patient. you realize there is a learning
5:48 pm
pass here. that's a great throw and a nice catch. brandon williams i should say just kind of assessing his first pre-season game. >> definitely got better and gave me an opportunity to go out there and compete. because i learn something new. even in practice i learn something new every day. i definitely got better today. >> i thought -- amar'e cooper is a heck of a player and he handled his own. shoved him out of bounds and got him out of bounds and it was nice throwing catch on him on the fade-in in the end zone. he will learn to play those balls bettedder my main focus is to get better and embracing the process. that's what i'm focusing on. >> how about more pre-season football. seattle, kansas city, andy reid, looking at his veteran quarterback alex smith. makes a nice throw here. jeremy, watch him scramble out of the pocket and gets it down to the one yard line.
5:49 pm
and here we go to spencer weir powers inside for the touchdown. russell wilson, you look at the way this seattle came on the second half of the season offensively and you wonder what are they going to do with jimmy graham and will he be a force. wilson trying to make a play but marcus peters steps in with the int and seattle actually behind. boykin throws up a last second touchdown pass and seattle wins the game 17-16 over k. crchtd. earlier today linda was talking about asu and the first day for a lot of the students out there moving in. move-in day. we head out there and we had a chance to talk to manny will conditionals, the quarterback. could he possibly be the starting quarterback? matte wilkens, asu media day
5:50 pm
5:51 pm
(jude)today asu football media day where the third floor looks like a massive media day where the third floor asu football media day. you have players and coaches
5:52 pm
rooms. people trying to track you down and i tracked down matte wilkens. when you look -- with a i believe and i'm speculating here, a two horse race. it's manny wilkens or brady white in my mine with the injury to bryce perkins. for wilkins, a confident young man a guy that believes in what he can bring to the table and the leadership skills and we discussed a number of things. the read option and the new coaches like jay norvelle and how that will factor into this year's uptempo offense again for the sun devils. question is will it be mattie wilkins or brady white. mattie wilkins what he sees on the offense and the confidence he brings to the football field. >> i got a pretty good relationship with those guys and it's just cool, calm and collect. that's my motto and how it will stay and just cool, calm and collect and make sure those guys know i'm not freaking out on the situation that we are in because if they see the quarterback who is the leader of the team
5:53 pm
be freaking out. just stay cool, calm, collect and never too high and never too low. anything the coaches ask me to, do i'm able to do. and my mind set with the read option stuff. like i said, i got running backs when in doubt i give the football to the running back and let him do what he does. like i said again we got guys on the perimeter that can make plays and adjustors would be wide open, just 13eu9 it to him and let him get five yards. so that's our philosophy. >> yes, something over there running around and it's move-in day. wishing i was a freshman again but that's a whole other story. this is an interesting football decision at quarterback and we will see how it plays out. i think it will dictate the fate of this year for sure. >> there is so much going on. >> anything else i can fill you in on? any questions? >> no, just -- >> i will fill you in. >> jude walks up and i missed the game.
5:54 pm
>> we talk about it after the news cast. >> a long talk? >> well, it will be a good talk. >> there goes the lunch break. >> worry about those cardinals sometimes. thanks, jude. after the break -- you will be back. >> yeah, i will be back hopefully, we will talk weather after the break. albertsons has everything you need, every day! the freshest food and low albertsons prices. and right now you can save even more during our huge anniversary sale. get pepsi, 12-pack 12-ounce cans, 4 for $10. doritos, fritos, or cheetos, select varieties and sizes, $1.77 each. usda choice petite sirloin steaks, buy 1 get 3 free. albertsons huge anniversary sale.
