5:33 pm
anybody inside there. >> no firefighters were hurt putting out the fire, and the cause is still under investigation. across america, instead of getting a tip from her customers, a waitress in virginia gets what she calls a nasty racist note. the woman says she served a man and a woman, and during her meal the couple refused to speak to her and would only nod their heads. she says it was an uncomfortable situation that took a turn for the worse when she their check. the couple wrote "we only tip citizens" and did not tip the young lady. >> i was born here, but i am mexican. it shouldn't even matter. i just feel like it's just rude and disrespectful. i've never met them. i've never done anything to them. >> the owner of the restaurant says that couple is now banned. to celebrate senior citizens

stick around. asu is taking part in a decades old tradition. what thousands of students are
5:38 pm
5:39 pm
tradition dating back to the 30's -- and it happens every year around this time in the east valley. thousands of new a-s-u students hiked up it's a tradition dating back to the '30s. >> thousands of asu students marched up to paint the iconic fox 10's ty brennan reports. >> an estimated 3,000asu students made the trek up to whitewash the iconic "a" on the mountain. >> it started in 1938. the first year students of asu were to go up to the mountain, paint a big rock white. at that point, there was no "a." and then shape it in the letter "a" on top of the mountain. >> reporter: the actual "a" that you see today was built back in 1955. students have been going up
5:40 pm
white, which represents a fresh start. >> for a first year student, it's significant to go up to the "a" because it's your first time up there. you get to really get right into something that symbolizes asu and really get engaged with the university that way. >> i thought it was good. it's like a tradition. i guess they all do it, and they said it's fun. i figure i'm from california, so it's going to be a good experience for me. >> i wanted to take part in the tradition also. i was excited to hike up the mountain. i haven't done that yet. >> reporter: white until the first home football game when it will be painted back to traditional asu gold. a short hike up the mountain for in tempe, ty brennan, fox 10 news. you hear the whispers around town. how much do we take away from the cardinals loss to the chargers, 0-2 preseason. what do you bring out from what happened last night against the chargers? we're going to kind of assess it a little bit and check in with
5:41 pm
diego. you'll see some of the miscues
5:42 pm
5:43 pm
(jude)you can say the games don't count, you can pull your starters after ten or fifteen snaps but there isn't a head coach in the nfl that will you can say the games don't count. you can pull your starters after 10, 15 snaps. but there's not a coach that won't say preseason doe matter for your backup quarterback. drew stanton had a game today. this is your first play from scrimmage, and you've got your quarterback somehow escaping it, avoiding the sack, and then you see the brandon flowers interception. i'm not going to overreact to your first teamers. i'll say that much. this team can turn it on, but you don't want to make mistakes. in the limited time you have in preseason, you want to execute well, and you never, ever want to turn it over.
5:44 pm
second string or second team quarterback, drew stanton, who overthrew j.j. nelson here, and you see the jalil adai interception, and you think, these are the only starts you'll get before the regular season, and you want to look sharper. this includes jackson shipley, who maybe wants to stay with this team. you don't want to overthrow like that. i think that's one thing maybe with more reps coming, you can kick up the sense of urgency. richard saenz spent the week in san diego. he takes you into the locker room after what happened last night. >> jude, the cardinals don't leave san diego with a victory, but they do leave california a much better football team after practicing with the chargers all week long. the veterans like carson palmer and chris johnson appreciate mixing things up. >> a good opportunity to come
5:45 pm
work against them two days in a row and 3 out of 4 days. we didn't get the outcome we wanted. jus got to continue to work. >> what part of you says, okay, this is just the preseason. it's no big deal. and what part says, all right, we need to get this together. >> every part says it's the preseason because it is the preseason. like i said, we've got to continue to work. you don't let it frustrate you. you continue to find ways to get better. look at all the areas that are good. look at all the areas that are >> this week in general, working out with the chargers all week, how much better did you get because of it? >> it was kind of different. coming out here each time, you get to face different opponents. you get tired of going against the same guy every day, especially in camp. so any time you can come and get some work with other guys, as far as getting past those guys, the one-on-one routes and those type of things, you know that helped us out a lot. >> we've got good work.
5:46 pm
sometimes that tracking dragging into the game because you practice hard with a lot of enthusiasm and have a walk-through on a long day, a veteran team should show up. i didn't like the way we started the game. that set the tone for the whole game. >> while it's just the preseason, the cardinals offense still needs to step it up. we'll see if they do exactly that next weekend in houston. the third preseason game, the game the starters play the most. so we'll see what happens next week. in san diego, i'm richardae for fox 10 sports. >> more preseason football. carolina, the defending nfc champs taking on marcus mariota. pretty solid season for the rookie from oregon. cam newton, just trying to sharpen the skills a little bit. this kind of stop pattern for teddy ginn. he takes it to the house 7-0 carolina. kind of wonder what mariota is
5:47 pm
as for cam newton, can he repeat a brilliant year last year. mariota throws off his back foot. you see the int. again, these are preseason games, where you're working on every aspect of your game, trying to get quality reps out there. here's mariota again, a little play fake running to his right, and making a nice throw to harry douglas. carolina won the game 26-16. nfl preseason action. carolina over tennessee. for the sun devils, one of the concerns, secondary. ash manned curry will be back. we know that. marcus ball, the young man from westerville, ohio. and let's not forget about kareem moore coming off the outstanding freshman season last year. it's drill after drill and a team trying to rebound after a subpar season last year in the pac-12 conference. todd graham assessing his secondary, expecting more production from his defensive backs this season.
5:48 pm
marcus ball, i thought, were guys that really stood out. kareem moore has had an outstanding camp. we expect those guys to be doing that. i was really pleased with jamarcus and with marcus' performance. >> a lot more to come with the sun devils as they get closer to that home opener against nau. groundhog day or just another d'backs loss to the padres
5:49 pm
5:50 pm
what do you say we just take a mulligan on the diamondbacks season. arizona struggling thru one of their worst seasons what do you say we just take a mulligan on the d'backs season? i wish. it's been tough. even more excruciating is how this team continues to let games slide away. gene sakura came up with another outstanding night last night in san diego.
5:51 pm
owings and weeks. d'backs up to a 4-2 lead. lock it down. get a taste of victory here. ryan shemp with a man on, he's going deep. he's going deep to one of the deeper parts of the park, and you're looking at, come on, it's tied at 4. now you're going into extra innings, and here you go. it's ryan again. this time against patrick corbin, and he goes yard again. a and the d'backs lose again in san diego. like i said, groundhog day over and over and over again. rough to watch. testing the loyalty of a lot of fans out there. rough, rough year. giants-mets. nunez takes a dive. can't get to it. jose reyes scores. 1-0 mets. giants have faded over the last few weeks.
5:52 pm
cespedes comes back in the third, this time off matt moore with a solo shot, his 23rd home run of the season. it's 3-0 mets. and cespedes again with his 24th home run. this is a seventh inning. how about this? the mets go on to win 9-5 the final early this afternoon. so a little baseball going. a little d'backs again tonight. i've ordered a sports psychologist for linda just to the cardinals. listen, i look at it this way. the guys that don't play a lot like your backup quarterback, you want those guys to be smart, play well, be smart, and quite frankly, that hasn't happened the last couple of games. a lot of pressure going into this week with the houston texans games coming up sunday to say let's get some momentum and get clicking and put some good drives together. let's see how this team reacts this week going into a game that will be here on fox 10 sunday
5:53 pm
we'll be a few weeks away from the start of the season. >> i've learned over the years there were times when i would -- i didn't even blink over this. i know this is all about a learning process. bruce is trying to figure out what works with what. >> who stays, who makes the team. especially when it comes to some of those second and third string guys. >> these are a bunch of first dates. i'm not even a little bit worried. >> that's the way i look at it. a few first dates, put your toe in the water a little bit, and see what happens. >> talk to me after game stay with us. after the break, we're talking weather. some things going on up northeast. at longhorn, steak is all you need. its not all you get. longhorn's great american steak dinner for $12.99. perfectly seasoned sirloin with your choice of side. plus an appetizer or a dessert. all with fresh salad and unlimited bread.

the baby opinion da looked at the knot first, spent the rest of the day climbing trees and chewing on bamboo. happy birthday, bebe. we've got weather moving in. we talked about it earlier. as we pan across the tower cam. the skies are getting pretty dark. a storm system moving its way in from the northeast part of the state and also from the northern part of flagstaff, where we saw some weather earlier. here it is on your fox 10 in the middle of your screen. that is us here in phoenix. that storm line making its way down from the very northeast part of the state down to the southwest part of the state. it's going to be making its way through here very quickly. there is what looks like to be pretty heavy returns dumb coming through. somebody in the northeast valley in scottsdale, they're already seeing dark skies and the gray. >> she messaged me and said it will be raining within 30 minutes for sure. it was so dark they had the lightning, the wind had picked up, and she said it is
