bus stop in laveen and tipped off police about his whereabouts because she wanted him in custody to protect him and others as well. she also told me her son was involved in a relationship with the victim who is more than 20 years older than him but she says she doesn't know why he tried to kill her. >> it was malik thompson's mother who called police alerting them that she had seen her son in the area of 35th avenue and baseline wednesday morning. police confronted thompson with their initially he tried to run away but eventually gave up surrendering to officers without a fight. the arrest happened at this strip mall where this a11-year-old girl happened to be. she was walking to her mother's work when she got caught up in the mick. >> i see some guy running passed me. and then as i'm still running so i stop and i look at him and i see the police come out with really big gun and then i get scared.

the police telling me it's okay. and you are okay. >> police have not said why thompson opened fire on the victim who was hit several times. the shooting took place last week in an apartment complex. the opposite side of town where thompson was caught. according to police and thompson's mother, he was romantically involved with the victim who was more than 20 years older than him. the mother did not want to go on a statement. >> malik was a troubled child with special needs and actually met ms. soto down at the maricopa juvenile detentionle center. several occasions you know, i warned her about dating my son. that he was very immature and not mentally stable to be seeing a woman of her age.

she had been shot several times. thompson has been booked into jail and facing several felony charges including attempted murder. reporting live, nicole garcia, "fox 10 news." a glendale internet cafe closed down after police say it was letting customers gamble illegally. the business is called mega bite located on 59 avenue and missouri. the arizona department of gaming said it investigated the cafe for several months and found it was allowing customers to pay cash to pay casino-style on the computers. officials say several people were arrested. they are facing charges of operating an illegal gaming operation and promoting illegal gambling and racketeering. >> this is some good news. officers in glendale have made an arrest in a string of sexual assaults stemming back to 2014. police say 18-year-old dennis moody is behind an assault at an apartment complex near 47th avenue and marilyn and accused of two other attacks on women

officers tell us that they used dna to link moody to the crimes and they say he actually confessed. moody is now facing one count of sexual assault and two counts of sexual abuse. three men looking for drugs and money invade a home in arizona city. terrorizing the man and woman inside. pinal county sheriff's deputies say that invaders busted into the wrong place. tonight they need your help to catch them. steve krafft has the story. >> 11:00 p.m., arizona city, south of the valley, pinal county sheriff's deputies say a 46-year-old man and his roommate this woman in her 60s inside this home. >> somebody knocked on the door and he answered it. these guys came in with bandannas. >> they demanded, their words here, weed and money. the man who opened the door asked, what are you talking about? >> one had a pistol and hit him in the face and he went and got down on the floor. one guy went in the back and i was in the back room and he

took off. >> he cursed knowing he was in the wrong place. on the street they yelled, if you move we'll shoot you and took off. so what did the victims and what do neighbors want? for one thing they like to see these three guys get arrested. >> that's what happened. i didn't know who they were. i was scared. i thought -- it happened so fast which i was scared. i dialed 911 right away. i guess the only thing is that they need more street lights out here. >> in arizona city, steve deputies tonight looking for three african-american men, one 6'0" tall, slim build and the other shorter with normal build. if you have any information call the pinal county sheriff's office. crews spend the morning cleaning up a big mess at a qt after a car plowed right through the store. this is near main and val vista. the front doors and class panels shattered. the driver of the car is investigated for dui. thankfully no one inside hurt.

dozen dogs taken from a buckeye home. it all started with a welfare check yesterday but the home owner wouldn't let them in. detective returned today and had a search warrant this time and fox 10's andrew hasbun is live in buckeye with a look at what it was like inside the home. i'm not sure i want to see this. >> yeah, to be honest it's disturbing. two visits to this home here in buckeye, detectives with the maricopa county sheriff's office seized a total of 13 dogs that they poor conditions. again, i want to warn you, the video you are about to see is graphic. shows the inside of the home when deputies went in there with a search warrant this morning. the video is from the maricopa county sheriff's office and it speaks for itself. the home appears to be in awful shape. the 65-year-old woman who lives there did not want to talk to us about the conditions of her house and the way her animals were living. but it was clearly bad enough for mcso to take away 11 dogs

this morning. on top of the 11 dogs taken today, two more were taken yesterday. those two were outside the home when detectives first showed up and appeared to be in poor condition. people who live in the area in this neighborhood here say the dogs were a nuisance and they frankly had just had enough and one of them called mcso to get them out here to see what was happening. they tell us the dogs were constantly run freeing and causing problems. one neighbor told us he believed his little 15-year-old dog was attacked by some of from that home the other day and he is relieved that this problem is finally being dealt with. >> he is a lot better than he was. before i couldn't -- he would just lay there and i would feed him and have to feed him with a syringe. he can't bend over enough to get stuff out. i hate to see an animal mistreated, period. i hate to see them -- i don't like to see them haul them off,

statement, sheriff joe arpaio said animals deserve to be cared for in a way that preserves their overall health. at this point, it's not clear if the 65-year-old owner of those dogs will face any charges. reporting live in buckeye, andrew hasbun, "fox 10 news." a group against a minimum wage proposition wants the arizona supreme court to overturn a judge's ruling that they didn't need a deadline to file a challenge. attorneys for the restaurant association say that the judge's ruling is wrong because weekends should not be counted to meet the deadline. challenging a minimum wage enough signatures in time tot- make it on the ballot in november. the mesh that is right group is against would raise minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2020. adot crews bringing some desert scenery back to the loop 101. south of shea boulevard this is heading up to north scottsdale.

including 400 saguaros were removed before crews began widening that freeway a couple of years ago but some the cacti had been around since before arizona became a state. they were stored in nurseries before being replanted. the loop 101 widening project expected to be completed this fall. coming up, a downtown phoenix print shop goes up in flames but the owner says his business will bounce back. >> the search is on for four suspects who robbed two women in the parking lot of a valley restaurant. >> and a deadly earthquake rocking italy killing many people as they were sleeping. we have a look at one of the hardest hit areas. >> and we are seeing plenty of showers making their way through northern arizona. will they make it here to the valley. i will tell you coming up in a couple of minutes.

death toll is rising 159 people confirmed dead after a devastating earthquake rocks italy early this morning. >> this disaster struck in the central portion of the country. not that far from rome. leveling entire towns. marc martinez has been looking into it and has the details and the damage. >> the damage is hear breaking. we are talking about hundreds of

and take a look at this. this was a satellite image of amatrice. a picture-esque village. look at that rubble. the walls of these buildings collapsed. we are talking about old buildings here. here is another look at the village. you can see again very pretty place to be but now take a look at it after the earthquake. it's hard to believe that's the same place. adding to the challenge here is that the roads here are narrow, nd bringing in heavy pieces of rescue equipment. >> death and devastation in italy. a magnitude 6 earthquake striking as many people were sleeping early this morning. the quake leveling homes and entire towns in central italy. 80 miles northeast of rome are several mountain villages that were hit the hardest. rescue crews were able to pull dozens of victims out of collapsed buildings alive but to fine survivors. >> we are trying to help pull

from the rubble. unfortunately 90% we pull out are dead. but some make it out. that's why we are here. >> emergency workers say it's hard to estimate how many people may be missing. since the region sees a huge influx of summer residents and vacationing tourists. president obama and secretary of state john kerry have been in contact with italian leaders. >> to offer his deep condolences. to the people of italy following the devastating earthquake that struck president obama saluted the quick action of first responders. >> he offered any u.s. assistance italy may require and pledged to stay in close contact. >> at the vatican, pope francis led public prayers for the victims and dispatched a vatican rescue team to the quake zone. and residents who survive this quake in this village used their bare hands to move stones and rubble searching for survivors and in amatrice they saw a lug sticking out of the rubble. it was an eight-year-old girl

the sad reality is the death toll is expected to rise. reporting live, marc martinez, "fox 10 news." even bigger earthquake hits the country of myanmar. the 6.8 quake struck in the central part of that country but it could also be felt in about half a dozen states in india. it really was a massive earthquake caused buildings to sway in bangkok as well. thankfully there have been no reports of serious damage in myanmar or any other areas that fell that quake. showers continue to make their way down the 17. will they make it here to the valley and how long will this rain last? i will tell you coming up in a

good evening, hope you are doing well. seen some storms firing outside of the valley but they are creeping toward us a lot of people are saying when will the rain hit us here in phoenix there is a chance we could see some but right now cloudy skies out there. about 101 degrees at sky harbor. the winds at eight miles per hour. but we are seeing areas a bit gustier where some of those storms are moving through. i will take you through our satellite and radar to show you most of those storms are falling apart by the time they get to the valley. the east a lot of activity moving through tonto basin along the bee line highway and pocks of heavy rain. isolated areas of rain as well. the 17, another place seeing some action this evening. just to the west of strawberry. as we make our way up toward flag, not as much activity at this hour. you will notice some stronger cells moving through williams and about the past couple of hours into the far northern stretches of arizona, scattered activity moving from the

then down into the tucson area we are seeing showers pop up here as well. we could see some of the outflows from these areas spriing the showers to the valley along with gusty winds potential for some blowing dust. the majority of the moisture to the north of us right now, this area of low pressure that brought the rain is going to continue to move to the east leaving us with pretty dry and stable conditions for the next couple of days. temperature-wise we cooled down because of the rain showers in places like sedona we are in the 60s now. 93 degrees in kingman. lower deserts still pretty warm. not a lot of activity in places like yuma, lake havasu, bullhead city in the hundreds right now gila bend 103. douglas at 85. and the rain not affecting valley temps yet. still on the warm side in many places. triple digit for glendale and surprise. same for goodyear. we have some 90s out there as well. 91 degrees in fountain hill. chandler in 100 degrees. you will notice it's dry out

seeing across the board are those areas where we are seeing showers. even then they are in the 50s. it makes sense why we aren't seeing a lot of activity tonight. today little bit cooler than the seasonal norm. 103. what we hit this afternoon back in 85 hitting 115. our air at the country not too active but seeing a lot of activity through the mid west through parts of ohio and indiana. reports of multiple tornadoes, the threat for severe weather including flooding, damaging section of the country tonight and potentially into tomorrow as well. quick look at overnight temps. anywhere from low 80s in lake havasu to upper 60s in kingman. upper 60s for safford as well. low 50s for show low. about 79 for gila bend. then tomorrow more triple digits in yuma, lake havasu, 104 and 105 respect. ly. close to 80 for payton. and 95 degree for safford. tonight in the valley mostly clear skies. we will cool down to 81 degrees. mostly clear for tomorrow as well.

annual zombie walk in downtown phoenix is being brought back to life. the event was canceled this year because organizers didn't have the money or the manpower to keep it alive. but now it's been resuscitated. teaming up with hemophilia association to put on the event in the warehouse district on october 29. admission is free with a $5 donation to aahm. >> i'm glad they are doing it that it brings people together and spending the money on so many other things i'm sure we can find -- >> we can figure it out. >> that was great event. >> the city of chandler needs your help tonight completing a community demonstration garden. >> the goal is to teach

a former phoenix suns former phoenix suns dancer finds herself fighting for her life after she is assault and robbed in a parking lot outside of a chandler restaurant. linda williams spoke with the victim a short time ago. linda joins us live. what happened? >> here is what is frustrating, these young women were doing everything right in a lit parking lot. there were other patrons standing around as they walked

still that didn't prevent the attack. >> as tasha terrell and her friend daisy left this restaurant in chandler saturday night, she says a car pulled up in the parking lot and a woman approached them. >> she talks to me and asks can i use your phone because our car ran out of gas and i'm like, your car is still running. and then she hits me with something, i don't know what it was on the side of my head. >> two other people then got out of the car and her and her friend. she says they snatched their purses, their cell phones and even pepper sprayed her friend. terrell says out of instinct she fought back against the woman who was attacking her. >> my instinct was don't go down and fight for your life. you are in fight or flight moment and i fought as long as i could until i could get away from her. >> she did get away running across ray road looking for help. drivers honked at her but no one
