good evening, everyone again. voters headed to the polls for the arizona primary. >> we have a lot of races that have been called tonight. >> these primary races have started to set the tone and the table as we head into the general election into november. >> john mccain, many people thought this was a tough primary. he did have to beat back tea party candidate kelli ward but look at that. he won big and he won early. >> let's look at house district one on the republican side. this is wog of -- one of the largest in the country. paul babeu, not declared the winner yet but is over wendy rogers who won the ninth district so it is a race between

if babeu holds on, this will be an interesting race in the fall. >> has babeu been declared the winner in a.p.? not official by the a.p. >> he will face tom o'halleran once a republican, now a democrat. it is a battleground and split. >> o'halleran former sedona police officer and has that connection to norther >> let's move to district five. christine jones has put out slick commercials. she is ahead by roughly of 1,000 votes here. andy biggs is the one that has been supported by matt salmon. christine jones is giving him a battle. >> andy biggs, if he keeps this close, it may be because of the mormon vote.

handpicking him. matt salmon was winning the races, 70% of the vote. sheriff joe arpaio easily winning his race tonight as he goes for a seventh term at 84 years old to become sheriff one more time. >> andrew hasbun live with a preview of november's race, arpaio versus penzone part two. andrew, earlier arpaio talked about his age and slowing down. it is true. he does have a lot of energy for an 84-year-old man. >> reporter: he does have a lot of energy and he told me he is ready for another campaign and ready to fight the good fight. he has millions of dollars to help him fight the battle. it will be against paul penzone in november. it is their second time, second matchup. in the previously matchup, paul penzone lost by six percentage points. there were three people in the

different story at that time. this time, two people in the race, the sheriff and paul penzone. the sheriff has a long running case against him and he is looking at possible criminl contempt of court charges for his actions for not following the judge's orders. there has been concerned that he is 84 years and some people say it is time for him to retire and change for sheriff's office. don't tell the sheriff that. he fought back and he says he does not appreciate comments about his age. >> i'm going to keep doing my job. i always do. and also, let the people know we have done a lot of good things in my organization trying to get that word out, which is difficult.

voters know me and they will return me to always and that has cared him in this district one. he worked extremely hard in this race. >> he will be facing a former republican, tom o'halleran. he has ann kirkpatrick's support. he will be facing tom o'halleran in november. >>oh over kelli ward. people tried to beat incumbent john mccain, which would have been abenormous upset. he wins by almost 20 percentage points. kelli world could not get by him. a deep war chest and he has been around since 1982 serving arizona. it is a difficult race for anyone to beat him but there is

ann kirkpatrick will be the challenger and anne kirk pat wick comes with a big war chest. you see her ads running up tonight. >> linda williams covering john mccain and she was with him when he made his victory speech. i sense a sigh of relief and the battle goes on and it goes into high gear starting right now. >> reporter: it what a fun night for john mccain and his supporters here at his headquarters in phoenix. i don't think anyone was nervous but i think towards the end as the polls tightened and some of the national headlines started saying this was going to be a squeaker of a race for mccain, maybe some people started thinking is he in trouble and the answer is no, he is not. he crushed kelli ward.

here tonight, he told them that it is imperative for republicans to keep control of the congress and have a stay in the supreme court justices. here is what else he had to say tonight. >> thank you to every arizonan who voted in the primary. those who supported me and those who supported one of my opponents. to the former, your privilege. i promise to work as hard as i can to deserve. to the latter, i promise to work as hard as i can for you, too, and to fight for policies and principles that i believe that essential to building a better future for arizona and america and making the world safer for our shared values. >> reporter: so forward we go to the general election in november.

to win it, paul babeu or tom o'halleran? >> paul babeu has a name. they have seen him nationally. >> we've got some of the table is set. nicole garcia talked to paul babeu earlier tonight and i guess you caught up with him. >> reporter: paul babeu had& his watch party in casa grande enjoying his victory in a crowded field. there were five candidates vowing for the nomination and he has the double digit lead over the first three so he has a lead over retired air force colonel wendy rogers and rancher gary kiehne. this is his second run for congress. he ran back in 2012 and he had a lot of media attention.

lot of controversies. he ended up dropping out of his bid for congress after a political scandal involving his gay lover. he addressed those issues saying he appreciates the support he has gotten from voters who are able to overlook those controversies and look at his merits and everything he has done as sheriff for pinal county even though there are a lot of attack ads against him. if paul babeu wins ticket, he would be the first elected openly gay republican congressman and he talked about how proud he would be to have that title. >> i'm so proud of republicans who are often described as narrow minded and not tolerant, just the opposite is true. i'm a living, breathing, example that it doesn't matter if you're gay or straight or race or color or gender. what matters is results.

judged on my performance, my merit, and the contributions that i make to my community and country. reporter: the race for the congressional seat is a toss up. it is held by democrat ann kirkpatrick who is vacating the seat to run against senator senator mccain. historically, the seat has been a toss up. this is one seat that the republican party has a get a new house seat. it will be a controversial and competitive race. >> redistricting has given the democrats an edge as far as the registered voters but paul babeu made a comeback from the scandal and he did survive that. maybe came back out of it stronger than ever. >> he owned it. i think back to jim colby who was one of the first republicans to come out and say he was gay
