president arrives. three trump planes have arrived. the white one that says trump. the candidate was on an unmarked plane for his short trip to mexico city today. and security reasons most likely the reason he did not travel on his big navy blue red, white and blue trump plane. he is -- >> just interesting, isn't it? he flies into mexico. you wonder what the threat was where they felt they could not fly him in on a with his name. the president of the united states flies on air force one in a plane that is unmistakable. he flies in to countries all over the world, yes, i mean, if you go into iraq or afghanistan you do it under the cover of darkness inch this case a candidate has to go in an unmarked plane. they must have been very concerned about his safety. >> let's take you to the phoenix convention center where donald trump will be speaking in a bit. this is paul babeu the candidate
5:33 pm
he has been given seven minutes to speak tonight which is more than anyone else. let's listen in for just a second. >> these men and women, these men and women put their own safety, their lives on the line each and every day protecting our families, protecting our state. and i want to send a message to all of those law enforcement officers, not just here in arizona, but across america, that help is on the way. >> isn't it interesting. paul babeu not in his sheriff outfit. he -- or uniform. he is looking now every bit like the congressman. he has a tough race in district 1 which is a massive sprawling district in arizona. roughly the size of new england. but babeu lives last night and ohalren wins on the democratic side and one of these big races that we will see in arizona going forward to november. >> trump has invited two arizona
5:34 pm
he had been outspoken about immigration. the effect it has had on their counties. the effect it has had on crime and tonight both of them -- pinal county sheriff even though dressed as the potential congressman, paul babeu and also sheriff joe arpaio, one of the first people to endorse donald trump was sheriff joe arpaio and donald trump has never stepped away from that endorsement. >> isn't it interesting to see which politicians are cozying up to donald trump and the ones who have kept their and i'm thinking specifically john mccain and jeff flake. our two senators. u.s. senators really have been nowhere near donald trump anywhere he has appeared in arizona. >> i posted something about that on social media today and i got something back from senator flake's people that he had a full schedule in mojave county and couldn't break away from it. i think there is a lot going on with their own things that they have to accomplish but there is definitely they are keeping an
5:35 pm
trying to make sure they don't appear too far to the right particularly for trying to grab independence and -- independents and for mccain since he is on the ballot he has to be careful and jeff flake it's interesting because he is not on the ballot. he has time to recover if he wanted to cozy up to donald trump and it didn't go well. he is not. >> we are covering this event wall to wall on fox 10 news now. you can fine that and we will cover it here on fox 10 at 5:00 and 6:00 as well. tonight a spending time and speaking at the donald trump rally talking about his son who police say was killed by an illegal immigrant. fox 10's courtney griffin met with him today before the big speech and she has more. >> steve's 21-year-old son grant was working an overnight shift at qt when he was shot and killed by an illegal immigrants
5:36 pm
smile that was infectious. he would make people smile at work. >> he had previously been convicted for burglary and was awaiting deportation hearings when grant was killed. >> every time i speak, the anger and just the devastation of that day is something i relive and it makes me angry. >> tonight at donald trump's rally in downtown phoenix, steve gets to speak about the anger and the day his son was killed. >> i'm excited to get the word out. i'm excited to tell grant's story. it's definitely nervous to speak in front of that many people. mr. trump draws thousands of people. >> steve says he wants three things to happen. he wants to see immigration laws enforced. a more secured border and lastly
5:37 pm
been speaking of. >> trump is the only option for us. i truly believe he is going enforce the laws. he will do what he says he will do. >> steve says had the immigrant been deported, his son would still be alive. >> that's not just the illegal immigrants that are bilking the system. it's costing lives. >> for now he is in jail awaiting trial. courtney griffin, "fox 10 news." again a reminder we are continuing to cover the trump event downtown. the candidate not there, yet he will be en route shortly and you can find that on fox 10 news now. easy to find. go to our website and find a live link on our facebook page at facebook.com/fox 10 phoenix. we aren't inviting you to leave. >> do them at the same time. >> yes. meantime there could be trouble on the horizon for hillary clinton. according to a new abc news
5:38 pm
clinton's favorability ranking slipped from 48% following the democratic national convention down to 41% by the end of the month. here is the deal. even though that is in horrible territory, it's six points higher than donald trump. >> back to the phoenix convention center where pinal county sheriff and now candidate paul babeu has just finished speaking and now over sky harbor airport, three donald t candidate as far as we know has not left the airport. they are waiting for the motorcade to leave the airport. he is speaking at 6:00 and it will be covered here as well as on fox 10 news now. let's take a quick break and be
5:41 pm
5:42 pm
tonight. >> that's a big caravan. you have the bus. you got obviously the reporters covering him. his -- and he probably has -- they will head into very friendly territory at phoenix convention center. a packed room. a lot of people got on trump's website, signed up to get the free tickets and were there very early there could be a few protesters in the mix. ground shot of the phoenix it's interesting that you got the officers there leading the way, keeping the caravan moving through. the motorcade moving through. and donald trump has touted himself as the law ands or candidate, really coming to the support verbally of the law enforcement across the country. >> and there you see the chevy suvs, donald trump in one of them. we don't know which one, there is usually a decoy. donald trump is supposed to take
5:43 pm
looks like he is actually pretty much on time and it depends on how the speakers did keeping their time at the phoenix convention center. but donald trump again this is his sixth visit, sixth or seventh to arizona and this has been fertile ground for his message on immigration but it's so interesting that as he crafted that message and it was very hard lined, he started back off a bit in recent days and it's now culminating with the visit with today where he did outline five points which we may see in this speech tonight. maybe kind of the same material that he unveiled in mexico earlier today. >> i can't help but to give kelly conway the -- who is heading up his campaign credit for a little bit of the softening shift and i don't know who is behind making him look more presidential. some people have been accusing him of photo ops. you have to admit what we have seen this week, what we have
5:44 pm
looked presidential. and i think what they are trying to do is for the people who go, well, i'm not sure where i stand. i can't imagine donald trump as president they are trying to give those people just some glimpses of what it would look like if donald trump were president. >> in the end that's the threshold that voters have to get by. can they picture the person in the office. that's the first -- are they capable and can they pass that test where you can envision it. and that's what these debates coming up are >> as we have skyfox showing the motorcade heading from the airport from swift aviation to phoenix convention center, you got to wonder if people -- you know the trump supporters watched what happened today and were given it a thumbs up. you to wonder if those people in the middle who are unsure where they will go are watch this play out and watch what happened in mexico today and are they thinking, maybe i could give this guy my vote. >> possible. and i think the other optic of
5:45 pm
lot of attention on this. we watch it closely. still average voters are not watching it with a keen eye. they are getting glimpses of it here and there and forming impressions. after labor day we will see people pay more attention. certainly the debates. three of them coming up here in the next couple of months. that will kind of tell the tale. for donald trump it's certainly a reinvented donald trump that we are seeing here in the last -- i would say month or appear much more controlled and much more in the role, i would say. >> i believe this is washington avenue. i might be wrong. i'm trying to get my bearings here. they are headed down from the airport to the phoenix convention center where in 15 minutes or so the candidate donald trump will be speaking to a pretty crowded house there. we are covering this wall-to-wall on fox10phoenix.com. you can find the link to fox 10 news now and we will be back
5:48 pm
not exactly entertainment news. the motorcade right now. >> when it's donald trump, there is an element. entertainment. the guy cut his teeth with the american public to a great degree on the apprentice. >> and because of that background it helped propel him into a place where people were comfortable with him. >> you made a great point a
5:49 pm
>> we were looking at twitter and the number -- the top 20 things trending and it all has to do with donald trump. he has sucked the air out of the room. hillary clinton today is not trending and she hasn't really done a lot today. he managed to find a way to create a news story around him that really the whole country seems to be watching. like him or not, he has managed to take all of the attention of the media on this trip and he is not just doing a campaign stop. he is policy speech here in phoenix really kind of ground zero for the immigration stories of the past five years, five, eight years. >> they are turning on to washington right now and as you said, as we talk about this immigration speech, he has to thread the needle. he has to sound reasonable, rational, compassionate and at the same time not put off the people who got him to the dance already as we see them heading to the convention center. he can't put off those

line on illegal immigration and trump will keep reminding people -- >> there is -- >> i'm against illegal immigration. that's what he will keep saying and whether he can make that resonate we will have to say. >> i'm tweaking this policy to make thanksgiving we -- making this pass but i will be way tougher than my opponent. sheriff joe arpaio taking the stage. let's listen in. >> and hit my right foot still hu it will be okay. anyway, thank you, thank you, arizona. thank you everybody here. this is a great day. i remember 13 months ago, 13 months ago many of you were here. donald trump really started his fight against illegal immigration. right here in phoenix in this
5:51 pm
>> sheriff joe arpaio, he is a lightning rod and in a lot of trouble with the department of justice but donald trump inviting him to speak regardless of all of that today. >> we don't know yet if he is in trouble with the department of justice because they haven't decided if they will bring criminal charges against sheriff arpaio as we get our picture back from sciexz. a beautiful -- from skyfox. as joe arpaio, where it all started to a gre months ago. what became a movement, it was that rally on a saturday, i remember it vividly and it absolutely exploded on the internet. >> and went viral. he was saying things about immigration and illegal immigration that no other candidate was saying. no other republican candidate was saying. >> no candidate would dare say them. >> and got so much push back and where we have -- where he has come in 13 months and all of his political foes have fallen and
5:52 pm
>> you have to admit he has backed off the original message. talking about rapists, murders crossing the border. today with president nieto in mexico he made it clear, i love the mexican people. they are great people. i hired them, they work for me. you saw a different donald trump and i think we will see a little bit of that tonight but he may hardten up tonight in front of this crowd. >> isn't it a gorgeous city it was 106 degrees today. >> who cares. i still love it. >> we are in the air we will take a break and be

you decide fresh off of a big win. sheriff joe arpaio speaking tonight to his adoring supporters. at the trump event in downtown phoenix. let's listen in for just a second. >> where she was when she was how many times did she go to mexico in the president. how many times? and that much of a trip. >> he is taking on hillary clinton. you to wonder what the clinton camp is thinking tonight as they are watching donald trump completely dominate the news cycle. she has been quiet and maybe they feel they got a lead and they can sit on it. that is a dangerous strategy if that's what they are thinking. you never know what can happen. >> we saw homes ago before we

candidate donald trump and his motorcade making their way into -- on to the property of the phoenix convention center. is that place he is familiar with. he has appeared here before. he really got the whole immigration talk going here about 13 months ago. and he invited sheriff joe arpaio. he didn't shun sheriff arpaio which many people would have done considering the trouble he is facing. >> arpaio in a tough spot but with donald trump he is in graces. coming up tonight at 6:00, in few minutes we will return with our coverage of donald trump. his visit to the valley, what some are calling an historic speech he will give on immigration and his policy and view and plan going forward. we will have the latest as the candidate gets ready to take the stage and talk about one of the most vexing issues in this country, illegal immigration. plus two married former tucson reporters pleading guilty today after their baby tests positive

violations of the law. so think of that. we have a war on cops. now i'm a veteran. i talked to donald trump many times. i know what comes from his heart. he loves the cops. he loves the military. he loves the veteran and he loves all you too. i will tell you one thing, when he becomes president, they will wipe out these the crime on the streets. when you burn a building down, they ought to be locked up and not being politically correct or incorrect. lock them all up and throw them in jail. that's what you do. we have to do something. we have cops being killed. we have politics involved. they call the justice department when they see a video. they don't even give the cops
