now at 9:00, a warning for people in chandler after nearly half a dozen fires break out in their neighborhood. why investigators believe they may be linked. a two-year-old boy is recovering tonight after accidentally shooting himself in the leg. we'll hear from neighbors who are shocked at how easily he was able to get his hand on the gun. >> why you leave a gun with two little kids out, i don't know. >> people along the east coast taking cover from hurricane hermine. we have a live report from that battered region. and later, a list of the most awkward social situations, including something that many of us do every day. good evening and thank you for joining us tonight. we begin with a fox 10 news

hospital after he is shot at a strip mall in phoenix, and marcy jones is live at the scene now with details for us. marcy? >> reporter: that's right, guys. i'm here on 32nd street and cactus where it's still a fluid scene, seeing a large police presence. i'm going to step out of the way so you can see what's going on behind me. now, they were called here for an armed robbery. here's what we know so far. according to officers, this could be a deal of some kind gone bad, this happening at a closed lal there was some kind of private card game going on. we are told one male was shot twice in the stomach. he was awake when he was transported to the hospital and is expected to be okay. here's the part that's a little wo worrisome. we have two suspects still on the loose, described as two black male suspects in their twenties, one in a white shirt, one in a black sheet. we are still collecting all of the pieces of the puzzle, a lot

running tests. we'll keep you updated on the situation, for now, reporting live, marcy jones, fox 10 news. the month of september kicking a you have with a visit from the monsoon. tracking a large wall of dust as it moved in from the southwest earlier today. >> this is what the dust storm looked like from earlier today, very thick dust as we take a ground shot, very hard to see. right here you see the danger of driving in a dust storm where you can't see the car in front of it's almost like thick fog, if you're in san francisco or something like that. this is on state route 347 as the storm moved through and a fox 10 viewer took this video with their phone. >> tough driving conditions there. and some areas even got some rain. this is near chaparral and route 101. that storm came in of course just in time for the evening rush hour as it seems to do lately, making for a it tough

dave munsey joining us with a look at some of the rainfall totals and what's happening out there right now dave. >> we still have a little bit of active weather around. this thing rolled in. it rolled in very strong, it did not fall apart until it really got upon us here and kicked up some pretty good dust upon us. there it is, right there, as it rolled in earlier tonight. take a look, half inch south of phoenix here, you can see anything from just less than a half an inch to a little more than a half an inch, rains coming down off to the west and a little bit south of us here. here's three hundredths of an inch, we have a half inch back over by buckeye, we have a half an inch east of phoenix over here, in one of the harder hit areas of the area, and then you can see here, about a half an inch north of apache junction, an inch and a half coming down there. still some moisture in the air.

down in the south, in the gulf, and we'll take a look at that as well coming up. >> thank you, dave. tonight, hurricane hermine battering the state of florida. look at that surf, the hurricane making landfall just a little a while ago as a category 1 storm, this hurricane coming up through the gulf of mexico. everyone was wondering what was going to happen with this storm. would it turn into a hurricane? and it certainly did, hitting parts of the panhandle and north central florida fox reporter nathalie pozo is in apalachicola florida tonight. how bad is right now? is it as calm as it has been, or you haven't seen the worst of it yet nathalie? >> kari, you know, it's been kind of touch and go out here. right before hurricane hermine landfall, we were dealing with very heavy rains and very heavy winds.

of wind. we are in the downtown area of apalachicola. take a look here, it gives you an idea of what we are dealing with out here. many businesses here did close their doors earlier today, put up that plywood, and also put those sandbags in place. now, one of the things that is of great concern here to the franklin county emergency management center is life threatening surge and flooding. i can tell you that they did already close several roads here in the county and they are also concerned with the storm surge, it's expected about six to nine feet. there was also a mandatory evacuation from earlier today of the barrier islands. some people decided to get out. others said, you know what, we are going to stay and we are going to ride out the storm. it's been more than ten years since florida has seen a hurricane hit, but the residents here tell me, some of them tell me that they have lived here for such a long time. for some of them, this is home.

for this hurricane. so we were driving over here a short time ago, and we already started to see that tree debris on the roads, also dealing with power outages here tonight. actually, the -- right here, the block over to us, that actually just went pitch black. we lost the power there. and also about a mile away from where we are at a hotel just down the road here, that hotel lost power earlier today. so even though hurricane hermine is here it will be over. we still have several hours of this, and then again what comes with a storm cleanup, the debris, the flooding, and the power outage. kari, i'll send it back to you. >> they have definitely seen worst, but i imagine that people are getting prepared just in case they are going to be kind of out of commission for the next few days with power outages, et cetera. >> reporter: yes, kari. some of the residents here were

they have been through this before. they know what to expect when it comes to a major storm. this is a category 1, so some folks did take it lightly. like i said, they decided that they were going to ride out the storm, that they were not going to leave, but they did have those supplies in place, the water, the batteries, flashlights, weather radios, all of those things that we normally see fly off of the shelves during a hurricane. i can tell you though that there wasn't any major least in the areas that we went to, of water and batteries and things like that. we only saw one store that had a sign posted on the outside that said they were out of flashlights. but for the most part, i mean, you know, people were prepared here. and i tell you we have even had several residents just make their way through this area wanting to get a peek at the storm, and there's even a restaurant that just closed their doors a few minutes ago.

chandler and mcclintock with the latest, danielle? >> kari and marc, this home behind me is the last fire where firefighters thought it to be suspicious. they say that it happened on sunday, and they are also telling us that this is one of the biggest fires and caused the most damage out of all of the fires being called suspicious at this time. their fear, along with several other people that we talked to here in this community is that these fires could get worse. chandler fire and police officials holding a community meeting tonight, one of the m five suspicious fires that have happened near chandler boulevard and mcclintock within the last month. >> it started at the beginning of august. it started small. the last couple -- there was a fence fire that grew kind of a little larger. it didn't get to the house. >> reporter: the last one happening sunday here on tyson street. officials say this fire caused the most damage. it started on the back patio and moved to the home.

>> i was woken up by the police department, banging on my door. there was a fire behind me and i needed to be ready to leave my house. >> he and other neighbors have had growing concerns since the first fire. >> all right after dark, usually between dark and most recent one was about midnight. >> reporter: officials aren't telling us what links the fires or what deems them suspicious. leeber is just hoping it stops before getting worse. >> i have two young children. my neighbor ha children, and they are very close to our houses. it's scary. i'm getting worked up thinking about it. >> reporter: and fire officials are asking anybody with any information on these fires to call police. they are also asking anybody here in the neighborhood that if you're out and about and you see something suspicious to report it. reporting live, danielle miller, fox 10 news. >> danielle, thank you very much. sentencing day today for a woman who was caught on camera plowing over her boyfriend with

misty wilke, she says she ran him over right here. it was tough to watch, because the man claimed he was hiv positive. as bad as that crash looks, that man was seriously injured, but he did survive. wilke left the scene but she eventually turned herself into police, and today she apologized in court for her actions. she was sentenced though to six years in prison. avondale police arrest a man accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a veterans organization. police say that kirk davis has been the tillman memorial vfw post for the past two years, and during that time he stole more than a hundred thousand dollars. davis, he is facing forgery and embezzlement charges. well you could call this a great example of instant karma. o after a scottsdale police officer finds himself the victim of a property crime, someone

the weekend, but they didn't get it away for long. and the person who caught them, you guessed it, the very officer they stole from. it wasn't a good way for the officer to start his week, his brand-new atv stolen overnight from his home sunday. >> the next morning, i woke up and it wasn't there. it was kind of weird being on the other side of law enforcement, having to make a report of my property that was taken. >> the officer was out on patrol later that caught his road near scottsdale and shea, an atv driving in front of you traffic. >> i thought to myself, this can't be happening to me. once i ran the vin, i confirmed that it was stolen and the registered owner was myself. the officer's body camera

a falcon 9 rocket going up in flames. this was during a routine test at cape canaveral just days ahead of its launch. so it wasn't even scheduled to launch today, but it was scheduled to take a facebook satellite into space saturday to bring an internet satellite into space for internet access in africa. the explosion started right around the upper oxygen tank. luckily, though, nobody was hurt here. a movie based on what many call the miracle on the hudson, based on a true story, an airline flight that landed on the hudson river, and everyone survived. tonight, we are hearing from a valley woman who survived. it's going to be a good movie, with tom hanks, it's going to be a good movie, right? he plays pilot sully sullenberger.

forced to land the plane on the river when all of the engines failed. they hit some birds. a woman on the flight says that even seven years later, she still remembers every single detail. >> and i was sitting underneath the right engine that was dripping some jet fuel on me, and it saw until the new york waterway ferry was approaching that i really felt that we were going to make it. as soon as i saw the boats coming, i knew that we were going to make it. >> it's i wonder if she is nervous to fly after that. >> i would think so, yeah. >> tracy says that she is thankful that captain sullenberger was the captain of that flight, and he saved so many lives that day. teammates reduced to just watching the game while players on the bubble, they go through one more audition.

your exclusive accuweather forecast with dave munsey on fox 10 news. hi, folks. we get it under a hundred at 97 degrees, winds northeast at 13 miles an hour right now. yeah, and in the had a lot of dust in it earlier in the day today. a little bit of rain to help clean things out. 93 degrees right now at deer valley, 85 at fountain hills, 85 in queen creek, and up in surprise 92 degrees right now. a little bit of moisture still around the state here. it's clearing out of the valley, although we do still have a slight chance of a shower in the forecast. look at that. that was the earlier one that rolled through. and there was some pretty good moisture with it, anywhere from

an inch to an inch and seven hundredths. yeah, it got up there pretty good in a few areas, but you can see this map is giving you a good look at this thing, just kind of wearing out, a lot of it drying out right around the city, but certainly not around the state. we have a little bit of active weather up north still hanging on here up in the flagstaff area. we saw some pretty good numbers up here as well from a half an inch to an inch and three quarters in some areas. so it really did pick up some pretty good moisture. through. we get over to the east valley here, and you can see some moisture rolling through that as well. and then down in the southeast, some moisture coming through, but once again things drying out very rapidly, and the city looking pretty good at this hour, even though, as i mentioned, we do have a chance of a shower left in the forecast. 104 degrees for the high today. in goodyear, it was 100 degrees. in glendale,102, 101 in

sedona at 86, 84 in payson, 75 at show low, and 103 at gila bend. this was your day, 104 on the high, 87 on the low, 104, 81, normal high and low. record high, 116, record low at 63. here is what we are forecasting for tomorrow. 101 degrees. you see some 104s and some 103s kind of mixing it up around the valley as well. it will b some areas. if you are planning on a trip to hawaii and you are leaving out of arizona, take a little look at what's going to be waiting for you over there. yeah, this right here, the islands right in here. this is lester, hurricane lester, 120-mile-an-hour winds at this time, running north is what the track is looking like at this particular time. this is a hurricane in the gulf states right now, hermine, and

jacksonville. at the present time it is 40 miles south-southeast oft tallahass tallahassee. that is where the eye is right now. there have been 80-mile-an-hour winds in the area. we have been looking at 10212 inch 10212 inches -- ten to 12 ifens of rain. you see it rolling up into the charleston area by friday with 75-mile-an-hour winds. you see it rolling up past raleigh and just south o new york with winds getting into the 60-mile-an-hour range, so it is no longer a hurricane at that point in time. so you see it rolling up and down that seaboard with still quite a bit of strength and moisture wrapped around it. 86 overnight here, 101 degrees for tomorrow. as things dry out just a little bit as we head into the weekend, we will still drop those temperatures down a little bit and stay there. watch your kids around water. coming up in the next half

tonight after getting a hold of a gun and accidentally shooting himself in the leg. >> and police say the toddler found that gun inside drawer in his family's home. steve krafft has more. >> why you leave a gun with two little kids around, i don't know. >> this was the scene last night as officers rushed to a home near 40th avenue and peoria in northwest phoenix. phoenix police say the little boy found a handgun in a drawer and shot himself. the bullet hit the two-year-old's upper leg and groin. the happened in front of another child in the house who is six years old. a neighbor could tell something was wrong and rushed over to hospital. >> i was in the house in the back, and my dogs were carrying on and carrying on. i usually don't look, i pulled the curtain, saw paramedics and ran out real quick. i looked over there and the little boy was in the living room hanging out and screaming and screaming, and the grandpa

michel gave birth to their adopted daughter, laura. she is now expecting laura's genetic sibling in january. a new york city mother is demanding answers from jetblue, and you'll understand why after her five-year-old son was put on the wrong plane. >> ooh. >> scary stuff here. maribel martinez says her son was supposed to fly from the dominican republic to queens on august 17th, but when she went to p jetblue gave her the wrong child. you think it's bad when your luggage is misplaced, where's your kid? a lawyer says another child was carrying the child's passport. he ended up in boston somehow. she was put back on a flight to queens. >> for three hours, she thought her son might be kidnapped. she didn't know where she is.

can't even see these things, they hide them so well. you don't even know you have been a victim until it's already happened. an alarming number of these skimmers are being found at gas stations across arizona. last year, there were 11 of them found in arizona. this year, more than 50 of them have been found, and nearly all of them were found in august alone. so to protect yourself from thieves using these skimmers, never use your debit card at the pump, and don't be afraid to ask questions at th g >> when you go to fill up for gas, you need to go in and ask the attendant first. when's the last time you checked for skimmers on your pumps? if they haven't checked them for a while, pay cash or go somewhere else. >> they have made getting gas an ordeal. >> you get paranoid. >> go in and give the clerk the look, the third degree. >> you drive around and look for a place.
