fox 10 news at 10:00. >> you may have seen it. the thick plume of black smoke billowing high sfwoot -- into the skies above phoenix. there's another storm, a hurricane named newton, and this one has its eyes set on arizona. what we can expect in the coming days. first on fox, this labor day weekend does not end well. a two-year-old girl is in the hospital tonight after she's pulled from a backyard pool. our danielle miller joins us live from phoenix children's hospital where the little girl was rushed. danielle? >> reporter: yeah, kari, this two-year-old little girl still recovering here at phoenix children's hospital tonight. fire officials tell us that she

minutes at her home near 85th avenue and camelback. just a few minutes after that, she was found in that backyard pool, no telling how long she was back there or even how long she got into that pool by herself. but we are told that a bystander did perform cpr, but they are telling us that when crews were rushing her here to the hospital, she did not have a pulse. she was not breathing on her own. some good news here tonight is that crews were able to restore a pulse but we are told that she was still not breathing on her own and is here on a tonight at phoenix children's hospital. and as i mentioned, not sure just how long this little girl was left in the water there. we are not sure who was home at the time, if she was with her familiment we know it's labor day today. they could have been having some sort of family function. just not sure exactly at this time what condition the little girl is in. we'll stay out here. if we get any updates on her condition or this case, we'll

a phoenix man involved in a shootout with several men who police say were trying to steal from that home. pretty scary situation. the man who lives in the home woke up to find several suspects, crooks in his home, stealing property inside. he exchanged gunfire with him as they ran off and got away. officers searched for the suspects on the ground and in the air, but there was no sign of them. >> i woke up to the helicopters surrounding the area, so kind of just got up and surprised and stunned at what's going on. they said you just stay inside the house and lock your doors, and if you see anything call 911. >> any information on the suspects. if you have it, you know who they are. you are asked to call phoenix police. a man loses control of his car, crashes it into an apartment after he was shot while driving.

morning near 27th avenue and camelback. the guy shot while driving down the road. the man behind the wheel died at the scene. police are still searching for the person who shot the guy. three people were inside the apartment when the crash happened. they were all okay. this is hard to miss. thick black smoke filling the skies over south phoenix after a metal scrap yard caught fire near 27th avenue and broadway. our ty brennan arrived at the scene shortly after the fire broke out. >> kari, this is where happened earlier this afternoon at the scrap yard called we buy scrap. firefighters were able to quickly put it out. but they say it wasn't without a little bit of difficulty. >> thick smoke could be seen for miles from the valley today. a fire sparked near this scrap yard at 27th avenue and broadway and quickly began to grow. >> we called it a first alarm fire, then upgraded to a second alarm, just to get the additional personnel here. we didn't know how long they would be fighting the fire.

plan to attack the flames. >> i did make the call to go out and evacuate any surrounding areas. >> reporter: this fire proving to be a tricky one. with construction going on in surrounding areas, many of the fire hydrants were turned off, meaning they had to lay extra line to fight the flames. >> the closest hydrants were not in service. >> reporter: luckily, within about firefighters were able to gain the upper hand. they tell me that they always hope there isn't a fire. today unfortunately was one of those days. they say this fire is still under investigation. reporting in south phoenix, ty brennan, fox 10 news. police arrest a 48-year-old bullhead city man, this guy right here, after they say -- officers called to investigate

the man's neighborhood last month. he was arrested on suspicions of involvement in other crimes, finding explosives ready to go in his home. a third death blamed on tropical storm hermine, a 30-year-old man killed after he was hit by a car while trying to remove a tree from a heavy winds tipped a semi. the first death happened when a tree fell on a home in florida. hurricane newton is making its way towards baja california with arizona in its path. dave munsey is in the weather center to tell us what we can expect. this would be something, to get some of this rain. >> we could see a couple of pockets of really heavy rain tuesday into wednesday, maybe lasting as long as thursday. but this is dragging a lot of

state of arizona. take a look at it. that's where it's going to end up, and we back off and show you where newton is right now. 90-mile-an-hour winds, but you can see by tuesday 75-mile-an-hour winds by 5:00. however, they do expect it to grow a little bit before that and then die down to 35-mile-an-hour winds by the time it reaches arizona. let's take a look at the track h it. you can see us movin tuesday, moving into wednesday, at a little after 8:00 in the morning. we put it into motion again. we go into wednesday evening, and you see a lot of moisture being pushed up into the state of arizona as it rolls along, and now we get into early thursday, and there's still a lot of moisture hanging around the state. in just a few minutes, we'll be back. we'll give you a look at that futurecast from another angle and show you when that moisture

the labor day weekend turns tragic.. when a a tragic turn this labor day weekend when a glendale man enjoying the day at lake pleasant disappears of going for a swim. 24-year-old chintan shan was boating with friends at lake pleasant. they were jumping off the boat and swimming in the lake when his friends realized shan didn't surface. we have seen it happen. a helicopter came in. a boat came in. paramedics came in. we were all wondering what happened. we just assumed that someone fell off the boat. >> divers searched for him last night through today. sheriff's deputies say accidents like this are preventable. it's something veteran boaters know well. >> being safe is watching who you're with, paying attention to your surrounding, not forgetting

with, and then wondering where he is at. did he fall over or is he on land? >> reporter: deputies believe shan was in 60 to 50 feet of water when his friends lost contact with him. police say there is now evidence that a bullhead city girl killed two years ago was sexually assaulted. prosecutors say justin rector killed bella bac of 2014. he is charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, child abuse, and abandonment of a dead body. jacob wetterling's mother releasing a statement today. the minnesota boy was kidnapped 27 years ago. saturday, police announced that his remains had been found. jacob was 11 years old when he was kidnapped at gunpoint while riding his bicycle with his brother and friend. last week, a person of interest

all over on people's front lawns, on the side of the road. people are showing support for their candidates, but there are also people trying to steal those signs, and one indianapolis man was ready for the thief. his surveillance camera and his trap caught a woman trying to grab and dash with a trump campaign sign. but as you can see, instead of grabbing da and dashing, it was more like grabbing and falling, face he got tired of someone stealing the signs, so he set up a fishing line, causing her to fall face first on the front lawn without the signs. well, a nice holiday weekend for everybody and is a good start to the week here. but things are going to be changing a little bit. we have a hurricane south of us, packing a lot of moisture. we'll look at it.

crews live from fox studios, fox 10 news is back. crews videotape a ship wreck. the u.s.s. butterfield was torpedoed during world war ii 30 miles off of north carolina. in july of 1942, a submarine sang during a battle. in return, the u.s. sank the german the location was found in 2014. but this is the first time that we are seeing the ship since it went down. i'm embarrassed to say that's the first time i'm hearing of that. >> i remember it well. i remember the day. >> it's embarrassing when there's a big moment in history happening close to our shows, and you don't know about it. my dad, a former history

are seeing in the futurecast rght now, it's going to bring a lot of the rain. we are going to see temperatures come down. that will be nice, kari. so it will have a double of edged effect. one might be a little bit of extra rain. the other would be a little bit cooler temperatures like 90 degrees right now, winds southwest at three miles an hour. 88 -- 86 degrees in surprise, 82 in mesa, 90 in queen creek right now. this is what arizona looks like. boy, i'll tell you, looking pretty good. however, yeah, this coming. as you can see, just rolling along here, it is going to lose a little bit of power as it rolls up into arizona. however, it's coming, and that's the track it's going to take. late tuesday into wednesday as we start seeing wednesday, we'll put the futurecast into motion for you. you see some stuff tuesday. and then we start really picking it up on wednesday afternoon, and look at all of that moisture that's going to be in here until late wednesday on the day.

little bit, and then you see some redevelopment coming along as well. we'll be in for a couple of days of it. 103 degrees for the high today. 100 degrees in goodyear. 100 degrees in chandler as well. we did have 86 in payson, 83 degrees in prescott today, 73 up in flagstaff with 104 at gila bend. there's 103 for the city, 75 for the morning low. that was a nice cool morning. look at that, normally it's 83 degrees. 103 would be the high. 113 record high for ?the ay. 61 your record low for the day. this is what we are forecasting for tomorrow. lots of 90s in there at sky harbor. we are forecasting 96 degrees. in the mountains, you'll see soe 70s, and a few 80s showing up as well. there's payson at 79 degrees. looking across the country, a few areas across montana today. the dakotas got a little rain. minnesota got some heavy rain earlier in the day, and then
