now at 9:00, a crime scene and a traffic nightmare. a woman shot in the head on a valley freeway in rush hour traffic. is this related to the freeway shootings from one year ago? millions of dollars in jewelry stolen from a tour bus while drake was in the valley last night. how police cracked the case. voters on deciding on whether to fully legalize weed in arizona. we'll he f the medical marijuana program to what he thinks about the measure. the endorsement for hillary clinton and how it could backfire. we begin with a fox 10 news alert and this is just a tragic scene playing out tonight. a woman is shot in her car while driving on the state route 51 northbound. the northbound lanes now have

>> that closure is causing a massive traffic backup as police investigate there along with d.p.s. we're told they are looking for the shooter who they say is driving a white work truck with latarax on the truck. >> ty, we're hearing this woman's condition is extremely grave and she may not make it? >> reporter: yeah, that is what we're hearing, kari. that woman fighting for her life in a shot on the 51 northbound. this is taking place behind me. we're told it is happening near the 51 and mcdowell exit. i want to show you what sky fox shot earlier. we're told the woman was shot in the head, again, she was taken to the hospital. she is listed in extremely critical condition. there is also another woman taken to the hospital in stable

crash after the shooting happened. police right now are scouring this area. we saw the chopper up here earlier with the white light looking for the truck. they want to talk to the person in connection of the shooting.& we were told by police that two other collisions occurred on the 51 because of the crash. traffic is backed up for miles the 51. if you can avoid the area, friends, family and trying to go northbound are best to avoid this area. we're waiting for more information from an informational officer from the phoenix police department. no word when the 51 may reopen. we're waiting any second to get more information. as soon as we do, we'll break in

reporting live in phoenix, ty brennan, fox 10 news. >> we will check back in with you tonight. let's break down where this is happening. this is the 51 here and as we zoom in closer, you see the 51 and mcdowell road. mcdowell is right here and the shooting happening right here and the traffic backup is intense on the northbound lanes of the 51. i passed this area tonight. i was in the southbound lanes. i have never seen so many so many stranded drivers on a section of the road. people were getting out of their cars, standing on the freeway waiting. they are stuck on the freeway and this investigation is going to go on for hours. the shooting happening in the northbound lanes of the 51 and mcdowell and the area is closed indefinitely. the ramps on to the 51 from the i-10 to loop 202 those are

>> so many people stuck in this in the evening rush hour. take a look at this video from sky fox. you can see all of the folks and they are turning them around and heading them in the wrong direction to get them off of the freeway. they couldn't get passed the spot where d.p.s. and phoenix police are investigating the shooting. the trooper is there trying to help those folks get to the exit off of the road and turning around and getting them clear from the area. we saw live pictu amount of people that are still stuck there. they have been there for a few hours. ty brennan is out there. we're waiting an update from police on the scene. we'll let you know when that is available. a sheriff's office lieutenant is recovering after being stabbed several times by inmates. the lieutenant was attacked by three inmates at the pinal county jail. the lieutenant was airlifted to the hospital.

think. through working with performers, the talking stick arena and surveillance, phoenix police say they were able to track down the 21-year-old suspected of robbing drake's tour bus last night in downtown phoenix. >> the suspect was able to walk on the tour bush administration remove a briefcase that contained $3 million worth of property and jewelry and leave. >> reporter: they were able to get a look at the surveillance video but he was being booked by another department. >> he was trespassing on tempe's main campus. he was arrested and in the process of being transferred and booked into maricopa county jail. >> reporter: king could have been a contracted worker who had previous knowledge of the venue. >> he has experience backstage, may have been comfortable enough to know what time to be there to

these two other men and del rio were accused of robbing the bank. they are facing serious charges tonight. sergio escobedo and ruben rodriguez was in the vehicle when the chase started. court paperwork shows that escobedo was firing at officers during the chase. earlier today, a judge handed down his bail amount. es have a tough time getting that much cash and he wanted to get out and see his dying mother. >> honestly, i'm struggling to get the money for my mom for her chemotherapy and she is on stage four. i don't know how much she got. i know with this, i probably won't see her again. >> a judge wasn't showing sympathy for that guy.

accomplice on $25 million bond. >> ruben rodriguez, court paperwork shows he bailed from the getaway car during this and tried to break into a home to try to escape and hide out but that is when he came face-to-face with a homeowner who pointed a gun at her. the woman called 911 rightaway but by then officers were already surrounding the house. >> i ran to the police and said help me and the guy is in the backyard and you're safe. >> thankfully, she was not hurt but shaken up by this whole thing. rodriguez told detectives he robbed the bank to "pay for a drug debt." pinal county will continue to have access to health cash under president obama's health care act. blue cross blue shield thought about pulling out of the county.

county get health insurance through the exchanges. the company says rate will go up by 51% next year but much of the increase will be offset by subcy subsidies for residents. a lot of people are talk about recreational pot. according to a new arizona a.s.u. poll, half of arizonans are in favor of 39% are against it, 10% are not sure. there is confusion about what would pass. the man who ran arizona's medical marijuana program gave a free lecture to help clear up the language in this proposed measure. will humble is the former director of health. it was his job to run and maintain the arizona medical marijuana program when voters approved it in 2010.

injuries after being shot in the northbound direction of the 51. i want to bring in sergeant jonathan howard from phoenix police. she was on the phone with dispatchers when the shots rang out. >> 911 received calls about an aggressive driver. she believed the men were following her and it was went she was on the phone that the dispatcher heard the shots and the call was ended. >> report scouring the city looking for a white work truck. what can you tell me about the truck? >> witnesses have described it as a work-style pickup truck with a tool box in the bed. we find there are quite a few of them. we know a lot of people remaining on the scene but there were a lot of people on the freeway tonight, if they saw anything or a license plate, urge them to call the phoenix police department or silent witness. >> reporter: she told you she

hispanic males in the truck? >> she described three hispanic males in the truck. we're looking for a wide margin of people. >> reporter: tonight, it sounds like a random shooting there is no rhyme or reason to this that you guys know so far? >> we have not determined a motive so far. when she was on the phone with 911, it would have been helpful to identify that these people are following me for this reason but that did not occur so that this investigation. >> reporter: this happened in rush hour northbound on the 51 so they are hoping if anyone saw or heard anything, everyone has a phone if they caught any information, you are asked to call the phoenix police department. you can remain anonymous by calling silent witness that number 480-witness. we will continue to follow this story and gather any more information. a sad update tonight, we have learned that woman that was shot

troopers look for clues on the freeway trying to figure out what happened. heads up. this stretch of freeway is expected to be shut down. >> one thing we learned tonight is the woman was being chased by this aggressive driver by the truck and on this phone with a 911 dispatcher while she was being chased describing the truck, describing the person driving it when the dispatcher heard the horrifying scene play out, the gunshots being fired and the subsequent the woman shot in the head, killed right there dying on the freeway. southbound lanes of 51 are still open and moving. the northbound lanes are going to be shut down for hours. this is going to be a long, involved investigation. many police officers are on the scene working the scene. we will continue to follow the story and will bring you updates in a few minutes. trending tonight, starbucks'
