burglary. despite her lengthy arrest record, the judge granted supervised release on her own recognizant even though he acknowledged the seriousness of the crime. >> if you accept the allegations, this was completely avoidable situation. if she has a history as the criminal history suggesting of really dangerous driving, i do think there is a danger. >> during the hearing the judge explained his decision to release her without bail saying release conditions are not but instead ensure they show up for court. >> it was a horrendous accident and i don't understand how they can just say, you know here you go. you know you did something wrong with ewill slap an ankle bracelet on you and hope you don't break any more laws. >> the mesa police department is trying to get that order revoked. meanwhile while under electronic monitoring she will have a curfew and face drug and alcohol testing and monitoring and been

she is out not behind bars. troy hayden, "fox 10 news." a phoenix mom has been sentenced to five years nine months in prison for stabbing her two children back in 200014678 they were not killed but wounded. today a judge sentenced brenda begay to those five years behind bars plus five years supervised probation. begay pleaded guilty to attempted child abuse and aggravated assault after previously pleading not guilty to attempted murder. begay stabbed her 12-year-old daughter in the c slept and stabbed her 13-year-old son in the chest also cut his wrists. at one point begay was declared mentally incompetent to stand trial. charges were refiled after she was found competent. there is some support building for a permanent memorial for the victims of the 2011 shootings in tucson. and it's being headed up by arizona's two united states senators. senator mccain and flake have asked the interior department for a permanent memorial that

community spirit of solidarity. arizona congress woman gabrielle giffords was among the 19 people shot during a constituent meeting at a supermarket parking lot. six people died including a federal judge and a nine-year-old girl. the gunman is serving a life prison sentence. a former mesa police officer is back in court next month accused of killing a man at a hotel. phillip brailsford charged with murder for fatally shooting daniel shaver back in january. theff call about a man at a hotel with a rifle. it turns out shaver was unarmed. brailsford will be in court on october 21. in the meantime, shaver's widow is seeking $35 million in damages. united way partnering with other non-profit agencies. >> as anita roman reports tonight, the goal today was to help those people get some very specific documentation that will

>> american college students use of marijuana continues to increase while the use of other drugs like amphetamines and opioids seem to be on the decline. a monitoring the futures study show the proportion of college kids who spoked pot has risen 8% in the past decade. but researchers say reason for the increase could be a very low perceived risk of using that drug by young people. as for narcotics use, researchers say that are heeding the warnings of dangers of using them. the percentage of use fell from 9% in 2009 to just 3% last year. the u.s. olympic committee they dropped the hammer on swimmer ryan lochte and tonight we are learn being his punishment. suspended for ten months from swimming competitively. for that gas station fiasco in rio where he lied. lochte was banned from visiting the white house with the rest of the u.s. olympians.

well, the victim in this tragic case, 49-year-old denia farmer. i want to show you where this happened. it's on the northbound lanes of the 51 freeway and see her right there between mcdowell and thomas. >> phoenix police believe this deadly encounter did not start on the freeway but at 7th avenue and broadway in south phoenix. they do not think it was a random attack like the serial shootings on valley freeways last year or a deadly string of shootings this year onit streets. police say they received a half dozen 911 calls of a white work truck driving erratically on the freeway. one of those calls from the victim. 49-year-old denia farmer. she described the truck chasing her and her call cut short by gunshots. the black older model honda accord crashed into a concrete median. court records show denia farmer entered a guilty plea last year to aggravated harassment after a split with her husband.
