around the police. we'll discuss it later in the buzz. good evening. 24 hours ago portions of a valley freeway became a horrific crime scene, a complee shutdown. a woman shot in the head, killed as she drove up the 51 near thomas, and tonight the search continues for her killer. >> and there are several clues now that could help detectives catch the for joining us. the victim identified as 49-year-old dinya farmer. police say that she had called for help, saying that someone in a truck was chasing her out on the freeway. >> and she was on the phone with that 911 operator when the shots rang out, when she was shot dead. it was just one of several 911 calls that came in about the same truck. detectives are hoping those calls, as well as surveillance video from that area can help

and the people who were inside of it. but police do not believe this was a random attack on the road. they believe dinya was targeted and that her killers started following her at 7th avenue and broadway, about eight miles from where she was eventually shot and killed. >> tonight we are hearing from those who knew dinya, and they are shocked that someone would want to deliberately harm her. fox 10's marcy jones live outside of phoenix police headquarters tonight with the latest. what have you learned? >> reporter: well, guys i spoke dinya's former employers, terry, who just had the nicest things to say about the single mother. sheb she is now is the time to remember dinya as the wonderful person that she was and get justice for her. glowing, friendly, warm and kind. these are the words used to describe 49-year-old dinya former. her former employer, terry says she was a beautiful soul >> she just loved to decorate.

morning, decorate from morning to night. >> reporter: when terry heard about the shooting on state route 51 last night she had no idea dinya was the victim. >> and then i started thinking, was there anything that i could remember that had happened. you know, she had her ex-husband, but really it was just typical things back and forth with the kids but nothing that stood out. she wasn't the type that was going to get into trouble. >> terry says the single mother of three daughters was a good provider and also breast cancer that had returned in the last year, adding that now her daughters will have to be strong without her mother. >> mom is just on the other side, and that we have got to think about all of the great things about her, and know that we'll be with her some day. >> terry knows firsthand what the teens are going through as her own mother was murdered in 2004. now she has a message for whoever is responsible for her death.

one of you come forward. it's not something that you want to walk with in your life. >> and just to echo that sentiment, if you have information about what happened last night, you are asked to call police or silent witness immediately. marcy jones, fox 10 news. a dangerous situation playing out at a border checkpoint here in arizona. we are talking about the nogales checkpoint in southern arizona this afternoon, agents opening fire on a driver there. customs and border protections say that somebod cross into mexico from the u.s. at the mariposa port of entry, but when they attempted to go around the checkpoint, officers tried to stop them, and that is when the driver steered the car right towards agents. and they say they were forced to open fire. >> initial reports indicate that a subject attempted to evade border patrol agents and while driving south through the port swerved his vehicle in an apparent attempt to hit officers working at the port.

agent fired their service weapons at the driver. the driver sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was air lifted to a tuscon area hospital. >> we do not know why that driver was trying to escape into mexico, get into mexico without going through the border. the border crossing there, none of the officers were injured. the southbound lanes into mexico were shut down for most of the afternoon, but they have since reopened. valley woman is out of jail after causing a fatal crash that killed two people. that woman is accused of being being drunk and under the influence of prescription medication at the time of that crash. >> again, under the influence, two people now dead, and she is still alive and had been sitting in jail. but tonight the victim's family, they want some answers. they want to know how they could lose two of their loved ones and then somebody who has an extensive criminal history, and

mugshot after mugshot was somehow allowed to walk out of jail. danielle miller has been covering the story. she joins us live tonight with more. >> reporter: yeah, kari and john. we actually spoke with the victim's family, and they are telling us that all they want here is justice for their loved ones, and the fact that this suspect in this case only spent not even 24 hours in jail, they are telling us that that is the complete opposite of justice. now, this suspect in this case is now facing two counts of reckless the family is hoping that she eventually served some time. >> she took two people from this world and it's left a huge hole in our hearts, and it's wrecked our family. >> julie reid wanting justice after her father-in-law and his friend were killed in a crash last month in the east valley. >> he was a great grandfather to our kids, and he taught my husband how to be a father and how to be an amazing husband.

caused by 32-year-old cassie who admitted to using drugs and alcohol before the crash, the judge releasing her on her own recognizance even though in the arrest report police stated she was a flight risk. the male suspect didn't even 24 hours in the jail for the crime. >> it was almost like a slap in the face to our family, that the judge would release her with her the law and with the crime that she committed. >> we tried to catch up with her to get her side of the story but we couldn't reach here. the wife and mother has a long history of arrests including prostitution, armed robbery and burglary. reid is hoping justice will eventually be served so this doesn't happen to anywhere else. >> it was a horrendous accident, and i don't understand how they

86 in fountain hills, 88 in chandler right now. in surprise it's 87 degrees, looking at the map here, yeah, we see a little moisture earlier, took a shot at clifton, but look at that stuff evaporate and gone. as we get a look at the futurecast here, we thought we'd show you what's going on into saturday here. when we see something in the east mountains, we turn it on again, and we get it into sunday, where you see some stuff starting to happen. but take a look at what happens later in the day sunday. wow, yeah, there's something going on there, and phoenix right in the middle of all of that. so we'll see the return of moist weather here coming up about halfway through the weekend. 96 degrees was the high today at sky harbor. we had 93 degrees in buckeye, 94 up in deer valley, and in chandler 95 degrees. other numbers that we had, 90 in

mueller, 94 in gila bend, 96 on the high, 94 the low. that's a pretty nice day for this time of year year, the norms 102 and 80. 110 the record high for the day, 62 the low for the day. you can see it going to 101 degrees, we have got some 102s and 103s as well, but there's a 99 for you as well at apache junction, 85 at payson, 77 at flagstaff, 106 at gila taking a look at these forecast lows almost cools you off a little bit. look at these nice mids, some lower 70s out there and getting lower as the week wears on in some areas as well. as we look across the country here, you can see a pretty good storm system moving through here back in this area. it dropped lots of moisture and that caused some flooding. also, the temperatures are very, very warm in this area, have

will continue to be a little bit warm. when we get a look at the moisture out here, you can kind of see it's really moving along as we turn the futurecast on. nice storm system as we head into the weekend for the southern plains, and that is just going to slowly work its way through there, and then you can see what happens down in the southeast. but also take a look at what moisture continues to come in over the weekend. look at that, as far as 2.58 inches of rain on the day today. in st. louis, they have a little more than a quarter of an inch at 32 hundredths of an inch, and then take a look at these numbers as well. all of these 90-degree temperatures. look at washington at 98 degrees today, so that warm stuff hanging in there. overnight and tomorrow morning, we'll be looking at temperatures in the mid-70s, 101 for tomorrow, and then as you can see here about halfway through the weekend, we get some rain, and we get some lower

monday he was a navajo code talker who served in world war ii and helped the u.s. win the wore. >> they built an unbreakable code. the japanese couldn't break it. no one could break it. it helped us win the war. this was an emotional day for those at his memorial service this afternoon. fox 10's nicole garcia was there. she has more tonight. >> joe kellwood was 95 years old and a proud marine. he was laid to rest today at the va national cemetery here in phoenix. kellwood served i marine division. he fought during world war ii and was involved in several battles on the pacific front, including the battle of okinawa. kellwood was one of 400 navajos that were recruited by the u.s. military as code talkers, a secret group that transmitted battle messages in their native, unwritten language. they are proud to have come up with a code that japanese soldiers could never crack.

code that was developed using te navajo language in such a way that only those of us who went to code school knew what the code is, so if navajo was listening to us, people wouldn't know what we were talking about. >> and there are only 15 navajo code talkers alive today. i'm nicole garcia, fox 10 news. and there is support for building a permanent memorial for the victims of the 2011 shooting in tuscon. both s senator jeff flake have asked the interior department for a permanent memorial that they say would convey the tuscon community's spirit of solidarity. arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords was among 19 people shot during a constituent meeting in a parking lot in tuscon. six people died, including a federal judge and a nine-year-old girl. the gunman is serving a life sentence. a phoenix woman who admitted to stabbing her two children

six years behind bars. brenda begay pled guilty, she stabbed her 12-year-old daughter in the chest while she slept, stabbed her 13-year-old son in te chest. they survived. she eventually was declared competent and did finally enter aley. we are learning much more about a pair of pinal county detention officers who were attacked including one officer who was stabbed numerous times. according to deputies a jail lieutenant was ambushed by two inmates and then repeatedly stabbed. another officer rushed in to help, and that's when he was attacked by a third inmate. the lieutenant was flown to the hospital to receive attention for stab wounds to his torso. robert via lobos, santiago

fox 10 news is back. samsung is in the midst of recalling millions of its newest phone. there was so much hope for this phone. the galaxy note 7, a gorgeous phone, but the news was not good for one florida man. he didn't get news about the recall in time. we are talking about a man who claims his new phone is responsible for setting his beloved jeep on fire.

baggage. meantime, the phone which just went on sale three weeks ago has been recalled. samsung has stopped selling the first batch of the note 7 phones and is offering replacements to customers. tonight in the business watch, banking giant wells fargo, $185 million in fines now by federal california regulators who claim that bank employees opened millions of unauthorized accounts for their customers just to meet their sales goals. sales staff opened 2 million unauthorized bank and credit card accounts and then used customer money to transfer to and from the bogus accounts. they even created fake e-mail addresses to sign up people for online banking services that weren't even real. drivers, listen up, we have got some recalls for you, and they are some pretty big ones. ford is adding around
