people who were fighting cancer, but instead it went into this woman's pocket. she was caught stealing thousands of dollars in donations from a cancer charity that she worked for, and today she was sentenced to two years behind bars for the crime. the charity is working to get back on its feet now. they say her arrest is making potential donors a bit skittish. >> and that's pretty tough for them to try to get back on their feet. their image has been tarnished. it's been almost five years since the employee's scheme, and even though they are still trying to repair the damage that's been done. they are hoping that their loss will serve as warning to others. >> because the true victims of this, other than our organization, are those with cancer. >> reporter: that's how the leaders of the cancer support community of arizona are feeling right now. the local nonprofit serves more than 11,000 patients and their families, and they are trying to repair their reputation after one of their own is convicted of stealing hundreds of thousands

42-year-old melissa, who was in charge of the organization's bookkeeping for five years, was convicted of embezzling nearly $200,000, just so she could spend it on herself. she bought clothe, concert takes into account, and even gave herself a raise. >> there were not any signs that he was going to do this. >> reporter: but that soon changed when the group discovered that the numbers weren't adding up. they immediately notified the attorney general's office, and they began uncovered her scheme. >> unfortunately, she was a trusted staff member, and there was not double oversight on her activities, because she was trusted. >> reporter: trust that has now been tarnished for both. cancer support community has been working for years to try to repair that damage and they say this has cast a dark shadow over them, but they say don't expect this to keep them from helping

they plan to do moving forward. >> parent of students who attend landmark and challenger schools gathered monday afternoon here at civic center for answers, though they probably didn't get thens as they were hoping for. more than 1400 students attend these schools in glendale. both schools are now closed for an emergency structural repair. those students will now have to go on a split schedule to two other desert spirit and bicentennial school north are the ones that will be on the split shift. for half the day, those schools will accommodate landmark and challenger students. when those students leave, those schools will then accommodate their regular students. that means everyone will get a half day of classes. some parents not too happy about that. >> it tears everything apart, you know. we have got to put our kids in a new routine, as far as going to
