state. >> rose moford truly an icon and died in a hospice center in phoenix this morning. she was 94 years old. >> she had been in hospice care since being injured in a fall last month. >> we lost a truly iconic arizona leader today with the passing of governor rose moford. >> a native of globe, rose moford excelled in the classroom and on the sports field. several sites around the state bear her name. she was the first female class pr it was foreshadowing and her list of firsts didn't stop there. moford a democrat started her political career in arizona as an office secretary and rose through the ranks. she was elected secretary of state and then took over for republican governor evan meek 78 who ras impeached in 19. 8. >> i -- in 1988. >> i will support the constitution of the united states. >> i will support the constitution of the united

from '88 to '91. she did not run for re-election at the end of her term. she would be the first of four female governors to lead arizona. the others who followed jane hall, janet napolitano and jan brewer. in 2012 phoenix mayor greg stanton asked moford to help swear him in to office. >> truly a legend and just going to be massively missed by me and all people across arizona. >> rose moford was so state after what happened obviously with governor meekham. this is from jan brewer. i considered her a friend for all of the 40 years i knew her. truly saddened to learn of rose's passing. she was a wonderful public servant and an arizona icon. >> governor doug ducey calls moford an arizona treasure. he says rising through the ranks of state government to our state's top office, she shattered a once thought unbreakable glass ceiling and

she was nothing short of an arizona treasure and she will be deeply missed. >> rose moford married a phoenix police captain in 1957. they divorced ten years later and had no children. the memorial service will be private but there will be a public mass held at st. frances xavier church. just in at 5:00, scottsdale police asking for help in identifying a man that might have information about a second ylg assault assault that happened at a scottsdale hotel. police believe this man in the surveillance photo knows something about that attack. it happened at the w hotel in camelback road in scottsdale september 4. if you recognize this guy, you are asked to call scottsdale police. the loop 101 shut down at the loop 101 this afternoon. the freeway closed following a crash involving several cars. four people hurt at least. one of the victims we are told, a one-year-old boy who was

three adults were taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition. skyfox over the scene northbound lanes of the freeway closed while crews investigated that crash. all lanes we can tell you are back open tonight. new developments surrounding a deadly crash in the west valley. police say a man on a suicide mission intentionally drove his truck into a car killing that driver. and causing several other vehicles to crash. >> steve krafft spoke to friends of the victim today who say they are simply heart bro happened. >> this was a truly terrible story. basically the police report says that 18-year-old keith johnson decided to run a red light to, quote, time it, so he would hit another car coming through the intersection. the crash scene he said i did it on purpose. it's my fault. >> keith johnson makes his initial appearance in court. >> sir, please give me your name. >> keith joseph johnson. >> and your date of birth.

depressed. he was driving. when he made a sudden fateful decision. >> this police report says that as keith johnson drove west on peoria over these railroad tracks, he decided to keep ongoing through the light at litchfield road and cause an accident. a accident to kill himself only he killed someone else. 46-year-old mother of surprise. a social worker who helped other people make their way in troubled times. her friends shaken >> i don't even know -- >> that's too hard to take. >> i understand that he was ill, but margie had a lot of life to live and a lot to give to everyone. it was just a great loss. >> margie's friends say she has a son in high school and another of kindergarten age. she died because johnson drove through a red light and t-boned her white volkswagen. >> devastated. she has two boys that are absolutely heart broken. that no longer have their mom

completely and -- honestly just speechless about what has taken place. >> two other people were hurt in the crash but their injuries were not life-threatening. johnson was not hurt and he faces charges of second-degree murder and aggravated assault. reporting live, steve krafft, "fox 10 news." that is heart breaking. thank you steve. we have a follow-up on a deadly hit-and-run crash on i-17. the suspect is now in custody after turning holbrook. smith hit and killed a man on i-17 who had pulled off to the side of the road after his car stalled. this happening early monday morning. the victim, javier gonzalez, was only 19 years old. two phoenix police officers out of the hospital recovering after police say a man intentionally drove his car right into those officers right there. this video i'm sure you have seen by now this happening

phoenix school they spent some time in the classroom working on get well cards for those injured officers. marcy jones joins us live with their get-well wishes tonight. this is so nice. >> is it. i can't help but smile so big tonight. my heart is so full after being with these wonderful little people. now normally in something like this it's the adults or the teacher's idea to hand out cards. but she said it was the children that came to her after they either saw that hor that we all seen now, or they just heard about it talking on the street. and she said that they wanted to take action. >> they protect our community. >> and it makes me feel safe at night. >> when you heard what happened to the officers, what did you think? >> i thought, like, sad. >> when this fourth grade class heard three phoenix police officers were mowed over by a

law that has been highly criticized for requiring officers while enforcing other laws to ask people about their immigration status. >> i believe that it's important to have consistency and certainty in the law and that's why we reached the settlement. i think this is a great day. as an arizonan that this is an opportunity for us to move forward. >> the six years long legal battle challenging sb1070 now over, this after attorney general mark brnovich issued a written legal opinion with guidance for law enforcement officers about what they can't do. >> you cannot racially profile someone. you can't detain someone unnecessarily. but if indeed someone is in custody or someone is been detained lawfully you can check on the immigration status and we want to make sure that people are following the law, all agencies. >> we felt that on our end we got everything we needed out of the litigation. everything we could get out of the litigation. >> director of the national aclu immgrants rights project

sb1070 hurt arizona communities and violated people's civil rights. >> the legal standards are crystal clear now. and we are open to working with any agencies that want to work with us to say how do we best protect people's civil rights as we are enforcing what's left of sb1070. >> in the opinion, officers must document their reasoning as to why they believe somebody is in the country illegally. wong says this will bring accountability to the officers and i breaking the law, new lawsuits could be filed against that particular officer or an entire agency. danielle miller, "fox 10 news". well, it's a little warm. it's not bad. we will have a nice run here, temperatures and weather. we will take a look at that

well, hi, it's 95 degrees. those winds out of the west at ten miles per hour. good look at the city as the sun sets here. 93 in scottsdale. 92 in cave creek. we have 97 in ahwatukee. 94 degrees in surprise.

on as far as the moisture, little bit over in the white mountains early in the day today. but you can see most of that moisture is away from arizona. we do have some in the west, but it's just not bothering us any. dew point temperatures come down even more as you got a look at them yesterday. they were in the 30s. a couple of weeks ago they were in the 60s and 70s today. they are in the 20s in a lot of places and single digit ones up north as well. things are drying 97 degrees on the high today. 95 degrees at buckeye. 94 in deer valley and a 93 out in gateway. other numbers from around the state, 81 at payson. 80 at prescott. 87 up in kingman. 78 at window rock with 91 at safford and 93 at tucson today. you can see these numbers looking just a little bit better over the next couple of days here. 97 degrees for the high today. 72 for the morning low.

177 would be the normal high and low for this time of year. 110 record high for the day. 53 your record low for the day. and we are forecasting about the same, 96 degrees. 97 in buckeye. 96 at deer valley. forecasting 95 up in fountain hills. other numbers that are notice forecast, 71 for flagstaff. 82 for sedona. 99 at gila bend. and a little over 100 at yuma. these are the nightly lows that we are look at that. 64 in mesa. 66 in chandler. nice looking 60-degree temperatures. mid-60s, low 60s in some areas. look at this across the northern plains. some good storms here. another storm through minnesota. you can see this area south of st. louis starting to build up and explode a little bit here as the day wears on. and of course we still have julia over here that we are dealing with a tropical storm

40-mile-per-hour winds going. not much of a threat off of the shore at this particular time. but as you look at the track, it's going to be there for a couple of days. not moving around very much. that is julia. now overnight 68 degrees. we will be looking at 96 degrees tomorrow afternoon. a lot of sunshine. those temperatures start to pick up a little bit but they stay in the 90s for a few days. we do see some triple digits about halfway through the weekend. watch your kids around looking good. you better get your sweaters out. >> it will raise up a little bit. we will get through it. >> here is something you don't see every day a herd of donkeys taking a stroll on a playground at the esstnsia elementary, did estancia elementary school. the peoria unified school district sent this out. the animals are probably enjoying the cooler temperatures like john was this morning. >> right. >> i'm not making any connection

it's check-up time for some desert tortoises at it's check-up time check up time for desert tortoises at the adobe wildlife center in phoenix. every year arizona game and fish helps some of our state's native wildlife find new homes by holding an adoption event for dozens of desert tortoises and today they teamed up with adobe wildlife center to offer check-ups for people who adopted these tortoises to get ready for hibernation season which starts in november. >> they are not healthy i have an upper respiratory tract disease or large parasite infestation. they could not survive hibernation. >> hibernation time for kari began on january 1 and never stopped. >> i wish i could hibernate. >> you kinda do. you have been making sleeping late to a new level. game and fish says a cost for a checkup is 50 bucks and still adopting tortoises through october 1.

lettuce, kale and cilantro. >> they live many decades. a developer is hoping that his new project will become kind of the eiffel tower of the big apple. this thing is cool. take a look at this. this monumental sculpture was unveiled and known as the vessel. this massive artwork resembled kind of an upside down honeycomb. can you imagine that on the new york city skyline there. this is a closer look. these are all little purchases. it side of manhattan. 15 stories tall. 600 tons if you are thinking about how heavy that is. >> amazing. >> 154 connected flights of stairs. can you imagine doing stair running on this. that's 2500 steps and 80 different viewing spots. the project will anchor a five acre plaza and garden in the area known as hudson yards in manhattan. the $150 million sculpture is set to open sometime in 2018.

is it one of the most high profile races of this year's election. sheriff joe arpaio is seeking 7th term as maricopa county sheriff but this year is expected to be his toughest challenge. former phoenix police officer paul penzone is hoping to unseat the sheriff once again and he is getting some unsolicited help from a deep pocketed supporter. andrew hasbun live with more on the story of the billionaire getting involved in the >> that's important. appears to be coming that reportedly has ties to billionaire democratic donor. they were critical of sheriff arpaio but today arpaio fired back. >> the mailers don't paint a flattering picture of joe arpaio. reminding voters of some of the problems the sheriff's office has faced in recent years but the sheriff doesn't seem to be too concerned. >> i think that people of this county after 24 years they know
