is it one of the most high profile races of this year's election. sheriff joe arpaio is seeking 7th term as maricopa county sheriff but this year is expected to be his toughest challenge. former phoenix police officer paul penzone is hoping to unseat the sheriff once again and he is getting some unsolicited help from a deep pocketed supporter. andrew hasbun live with more on the story of the billionaire getting involved in the >> that's important. appears to be coming that reportedly has ties to billionaire democratic donor. they were critical of sheriff arpaio but today arpaio fired back. >> the mailers don't paint a flattering picture of joe arpaio. reminding voters of some of the problems the sheriff's office has faced in recent years but the sheriff doesn't seem to be too concerned. >> i think that people of this county after 24 years they know

and they aren't going to let this office be bought by some left liberal guy that gives tons of money to democrats. >> george sorros is a democratic mega donor. one of the richest men in the country. the mailers mailers were sent by a group calls maricopa strong which the associated press reports has ties to the billionaire activist. >> is he bigger than president of the united he is targeted me. attorney general of the united states? who is george sorros. >> as an early endorser of donald trump, the sheriff has a high profile here and across the nation. but some polls suggest the race between the sheriff and former phoenix police sergeant paul penzone will be a close one. however the sheriff has millions more than penzone in his campaign war chest that may explain why outside groups like the one who sent these mailers are getting involved.

area of 20th street and watkins. one of the suspects in the home invasion led police on a short pursuit before he crashed his vehicle and tried to make a run for it. >> this morning at 1:30 phoenix police responded to what was a home invasion out at 64th avenue and avalon in west phoenix. >> sergeant vince lewis with the phoenix police department says four people were detained at that scene. one of them a suspect in the break-in. three others were the home taken in on a separate investigation. the second suspect in the break-in made a run for it. >> you guys are able to track him where? >> to another location near second and jones and then that's when the suspect made it inside of a home and the officers put tire spikes behind the car. the suspect made it back to the vehicle and left that location. >> at that point the suspect took off again. driving down the i-17 causing a

shut down for hours. >> that's when the suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. the suspect got out of the vehicle and ran on foot eastbound along the fence line followed by three officers. the suspect then turned to present a firearm at those officers. the officers perceiving a threat for their own lives and each other one sergeant shot the suspect and ended the threat. >> the phoenix police department says one of the three police officers that chased that suspectow investigators are working to determine if the suspect also fired his weapon. anita roman, "fox 10 news." the name of the suspect who was shot has not been released tonight. we are learning more about an overnight shooting that seriously injured two bystanders. this one happening around 11:30 at a 7/11 near 27th avenue and indian school road. phoenix police say that somebody in a white truck parked in the lot there and then fired a gun

stop. a man and a woman were hit and they were take tonight hospital but they should be okay. right now police don't have a suspect or a motive. a washington state mom and her boyfriend are in big trouble after they tossed a four-year-old, the woman's son, off a bridge into 25 feet of water. the boy was not hurt and now the mom and boyfriend charged for reckless endangerment. both claimed in court this week that it was all in good fun and the boy wanted to be thrown. the judge disagreed. to throw a child off there. it's certainly warranted a criminal charge. >> wow. the woman's two kids now have been placed in foster care. one crook commits a pretty bad sin stealing $10,000 from a collection basket at a church. it happened at a church in palo alto california. >> i know this place. >> sound shocked it would happen. >> it could happen anywhere.
