rose mofford story is a truly unique arizona story. rising through the ranks of state government to our state's top office. she shattered a once thought unbreakable glass ceiling and served as an unparalleled role model to many. she was nothing short of an arizona treasure. and will be deeply missed. in a statement to fox 10, former arizona governor jan brewer says that mofford, i considered her a friend for all of the 40 years i truly saddened to learn of she was a wonderful public servant and an arizona icon. my thoughts and prayers are with her and her family. she will be dearly missed by many. >> trail blazer, icon, friend. that's how former arizona governor rose mofford is remembered tonight. >> which is truly a legend and will be massively missed by me and all people across arizona. >> in 1988, mofford became governor taking over for evan meekham who was impeached and removed from office. >> i rose mofford.

tough day but what a life and for people who moved here and weren't around when she was governor, what would you like them to know? >> i hope we are saddened by governor mofford, rose mofford's passing. she had 94 very solid years. it's a record to be admired. and frankly she gives an enduring picture of what the best of arizona is all about. >> you said to me there were -- we got a state bird, a state flower -- >> yeah we do. we have one of those that -- and if you had a state -- let's say hate to use the word character because she was far more than that, but let's just say a person who epitomizes what the best of this state is all about would be rose mofford. hard working, honest. she said at one point she was success that she ended up being because of her roots, she grew

her religion, and her rolodex and that rolodex was powerful. >> tell folks tonight when evanmycome was impeached -- evan meekam was impeached, what she meant to the state in the healing process. >> i think that was her gift. rose never in the will rogers sense never met a person she didn't like and didn't like her. she had no vision as to party. she was anybody and any part of arizona and they were her friends. they were truly her friends. so when she took over the governorship in a time of incredible division and incredible hostilities and frankly a lot of doubt about whether arizona could survive, you know. it was a rough time and she came in and healed the waters. she reached out throughout the state to people to pull together and i think it gave us all hope. >> and unless you were here at

it requires officers while enforcing other laws to question people about their immigration status. the so-called papers please provision was the last of seven challenge to sb1070. >> we felt on our end we got everything we needed out of 9 litigation and everything we could get out of litigation. >> a clu reached an agreement with the state this after attorney general mark brnovich issued a written legal opinion with guidance for law enforcement officers about wha they can and can't do. troy hayden has more. >> so i'm here with attorney general mark brnovich and so the bottom line is the papers please provision of sb1070 looks like it will stand now. >> we have reached a settlement with the aclu that we are filing in district court today that allow section 2b the provision you are referring to stand. so there are circumstances or law enforcement agents can indeed check immigration status of individuals. we were issuing an opinion that

for the entire state law enforcement agencies as to what they should or shouldn't do regarding immigration status. >> what will you say to them. what can't can or can't do? >> you cannot racially profile someone. you can't detain someone unnecessarily. but if indeed someone is in custody or someone is been detained lawfully you can check on the immigration status and we just want to make sure that people are following the law, all law enforcement agency. >> is this symbolic or will have teeth. will you have people if they don't they are legally will be taken away by i.c.e.? >> i believe it's important to have consistency and certainty notice law and that's why we reached the settlement. i think this is a great day. i feel as an arizonan this is an opportunity for us to move forward providing clarification in the law. we are providing guidance to law enforcement agencies as to what they can and can't do. and section 2b, provision you are referring to, remains in effect. >> thank you attorney general. appreciate it. >> thank you, troy. thank you very much.

the village of oak creek and a california man are under arrest on molestation and child pornography charges. this is what we are learning. detectives took gary zimmerman into custody on friday. the registered sex offender molested a teenage boy. the previous day investigators served a search warrant in long beach, california. where richard sumner lives. he was involved in creating child porn. several law enforcement agencies they teamed up and say they learned both men were sexually abusing young yavapai sheriff's detectives are working to identify if there may be more victims out this. >> in surprise, new developmented in the wake of a deadly crash in the west valley. police say a man on a suicide mission drove his truck into a car killing the driver of that car and causing several other vehicles to crash. keith johnson making his first appearance in court at the fourth avenue jail. police say johnson was depressed. he seemed tired and he was

to blow through a red light at peoria and litchfield and hit another car to kill himself only he killed someone else. 46-year-old margie yah of surprise. a social worker who helped other people make their way through troubled times. her friends stunned and shaken by the news. >> that's too hard to take. i understand that he was ill, but live and a lot to give to everyone. it was a great loss. >> margie's friends say she has a son in high school and another one who is a kindergartener. she died because johnson drove through that red light and t-boned her white volkswagen. johnson, the driver who is in custody was not injured. he faces second degree murder charges and aggravated assault. if samsung was hoping to quietly reissue phones to customers who bought the note 7

her, its lounge, at least the lounges called the rose room, it serves a drink named after her which staff say is the best selling cocktail there. all of the signature cocktails named after famous arizona politicians. and there is a painting of rose mofford in the rose room. valley bar put out post-it notes for people to write messages and place around mofford's portrait. >> mofford to me stands for someone who fought for social equality, and we need more politicians like that these days. she did so much even after she was out of office. she considered herself the mother of arizona and everyone was her kid here. all about the people here. not necessarily about any other issue. it was about the people. >> when valley bar opened last year, a friend took pictures of the rose room to show mofford and she sent the bar a care package. thanking them. valley bar located near central

september is child cancer awareness month. nearly 16,000 kids diagnosed with cancer every year in this country. many of them right here in phoenix. and tonight liz kotalik has the story of presley who was diagnosed in may and continues to fight for her life. >> words of hope and encouragement brighten the walls of a special room at phoenix children's hospital. the positivity taking the edge off the machines and the medicine something nine month old presley knox and need in the fight to save this young life. >> until you are faced with it, you don't think about it. >> mothers liz and lori will never forget the day they saw it the rare malignant brain tu amer that spread after weeks of misdiagnosis by other doctors in the valley. >> believing she will be okay keeps me positive. it's very hard. i worry about her every day. and just keeping my strength to be here and then turn around and

>> a different mom to their five other children. their family made up of three sets of twins. their youngest, presley and her brother, a healthy boy and a very sick little girl. two brain surgeries and chemotherapy treatments later, 99% of presley's tumor has been safely removed. but the fight is far from overrer what the transplant really is, is a rescue. >> the doctor has a unique plan for presley's remission. it's focused on the bone marrow. instead of radiation that would cause permanent damage. >> high doses of chemotherapy, which would normally would really suppress and wipe out your bone marrow and then you rescue the person with their own bone marrow. >> a treatment that starts in just a few weeks with family, friends and an entire hospital praying for the best. and as presley's story continues to spread, those extra positive thoughts liz says gives them the strength to fight on.

me and marcus growing up. still things that i hold near and dear to my heart and i want to teach it to my boys as well. love you. >> when my mom -- somebody that i used constantly for inspiration, a lot of things she went through and i'm hurting and i'm sore and i always remember my mom for instance, going through her chemotherapy and i come upstairs and i see her throwing up in the bathroom, you know, and i still see her wip her mouth and clean herself up and get-up and go care about her business. the discipline she had. i try to use that as inspiration because whatever life throws at you jowrk two options, you can either lay down or get up and keep fighting. and seeing those kind of examples always has made me want to fight no matter what the circumstances are. >> you have it believe larry's mom would be proud of her son reaching another milestone. his 100th career touchdown
