moved the needle all that much. the interesting thing about tonight marc was donald trump kind of had an opportunity here, because he had been gaining in the polls. he was coming into this debate as an underdog. if he could have separated from hillary clinton and really had a big, big performance, that might have caused that separation to get going. i think that wasn't the kind of that was evident in the spin room. right off the bat, we got into the clinton e-mails. donald trump talked about it and hillary clinton tried to defend it. take a listen. >> i made a mistake using a private e-mail. >> that's for sure. >> and if i had to do it over again, i would obviously do it differently. but i'm not going to make any excuses, it was a mistake, and i take responsibility for that. >> mr. trump? >> that was more than a mistake.
10:01 pm
okay? that was not a mistake. that was done purposely. when you have your staff taking the fifth amendment, taking the fifth so they are not prosecuted, when you have the man who set up the illegal server taking the fifth, i think it's disgraceful, and believe me, this country really thinks it's disgraceful also. >> reporter: now, all of this is still kind of old ground, and the point that i have been making throughout the evening is that for voters who were trying to learn something new about not sure they did. took a look take a listen. they also talked about trump's comments about women, disparaging women. hillary clinton went after donald trump on that score tonight as well. >> this is a man who has called women pigs, slobs, and dogs, and someone who has said pregnancy is an inconvenience to employers, who has said -- >> i never said that. >> -- women don't deserve equal
10:02 pm
job as men. >> i didn't say it. she has experience, but she's got bad experience, and this country can't afford to have another four years of that kind of experience. >> reporter: that may be donald trump's most potent argument, that if you want change, you're probably not going to get it from hillary clinton, that he is the only opportunity to be an agent for change because he's shotgun new and different. donald trump ventured into the spin room done, this is unusual and kind of the hallmark of a candidate that maybe thinks they lost. you go in to rewrite history and put a new spin on it. i can tell you, reading the body language of melania trump and all of the kids, they didn't think it was a great night either. he got through it, but i think some were expecting that we would see donald trump with a little bit more mastery of the
10:03 pm
of time too delve into the details of some of what he wants to do, and we didn't get that tonight. those voters who were a little more skeptical, i am not sure that he soothed them tonight. i am not sure it made a lot of difference, and i frankly thought that the debate was a bit of a letdown. very much like a super bowl where everybody is anticipating the kickoff, think it's going to be a great four hours, and it turns out to be a little bit of a dud. >> they didn't have to get into some of th you -- but what now, >> i think it could get more testy, actually, particularly if the polls don't move in donald trump's favor. this could put him more in attack dog mode where he really goes after her. these next two presidential debates, we have got a vice presidential in between, but
10:04 pm
las vegas, depending on who is behind, it could get even uglier than tonight. there was a lot of interruption. lester holt lost some control tonight as the moderator. this could be interesting going forward. i just think a lot of voters in the middle, they maybe came away with scratching their heads, saying i don't know what to think. it was kind of messy. >> great. i think you're right, john. you did a great job in new york, and we appreciate there were several debate parties around the valley, the republicans holding one at their phoenix headquarters here while the democrats held one over at the el portal restaurant over in phoenix. but what about those who teach and study politics, professors and student's at a.s.u.'s walter cronkite school of journalism had their own watch party in downtown phoenix. ty brennan with more on that now. >> reporter: students here at
10:05 pm
journalism and mass xooukss all came tout watch this tonight for the first time as peers. there were 200 students who came out to watch the first presidential debate tonight. we spoke to a number of students during that debate. for many, this will be their very first time voting for president. we asked them the question, who are you voting for, and does this survey or solidify who you have chosen. >> i'm kind of on the fence. i'm not a fan of either candidate. i probably won't vote for either, personally, i'll probably go third-party. >> but think this help solidify your decision? >> i definitely think so. i think watching it so far, i'm sticking with my decision, and i'm very proud of it. >> not donald trump, for sure, and i really wish that bernie sanders, that candidate, would have been able to come through, but unfortunately he wasn't, so i think hillary clinton would be my best bet right now.
10:06 pm
voters notoriously don't come out and vote in the polls, and we asked a lot of these students tonight, what do you think about that? and they said during this election season, they think there is going to be a big change, because during this election they basically have been slapped in the face with all of this political coverage, and they think that that night sway a lot of these younger voters to get out there and actually vote in november. reporting live in downtown phoenix tonight, ty brennan, fox 10 news. okay, ty. thanks. well we had a question for you. in tonight's debate. we asked you to vote on our twitter poll, unscientific, of course, but more than half of you believed that donald trump came out on twitter. if you haven't voted yet, head over to our twitter page and tell us what you think. there were some people though who decided not to watch tonight's debate, and some of them just happened to be supporters of libertarian candidate gary johnson, a lot of them gathering outside arizona's state capitol, boycotting, upset that their candidate was not
10:07 pm
doesn't mean he doesn't have a chance. >> we are just asking for people to mention him in the polls, because the new polls start immediately tonight after the debate is over. >> and johnson's polling has been up and down. he peaked at around 13% just a few weeks a but the latest poll had him at aroun if tonight's presidential debate wasn't enough to get you up to vote, you only have a few weeks left to register. you have until october 10th to do so in person. the election day of course is tuesday november 8th. a sex assault suspect is on the loose in glendale. the latest on the search for the man in this sketch. plus, several threats aimed at valley high schools and what each school is doing now to keep
