thanks for joining us for fox 10 news at 5 on what turned out to be a rainy sunday in more ways than one. >> it sure did. a tough day for the arizona cardinals, unfortunately, for cardinals fans as they took on the l.a. rams. let's get right to jude lacava, he's got a look at the to game. >> this all or nothing season now has fallen to a record of 1-3. cards fans digest that. let's show you how it started earlier today at university of phoenix stadium. todd gurley. you knew he was going to be the focal point of the offense but there was a lot more to this game. case keenam going downfield and he makes a nice throw to quick, and quick does the rest, goes the distance, beats the secondary and the rams strike first, late first quarter.
5:03 pm
palmer, first and 10. late second, nice throw. not quite. picked off. turnovers, penalties haunting the cardinals. johnson doing a nice job. in great position. another turnover for the arizona cardinals. first and goal, palmer, plenty of time, makes the throw, plenty back, touchdown to michael floyd. floyd early drops, but then would rally with this catch. ties the game at 10 at the half. to the trd keenam did a nice job managing the game. finally, chandler jones pressures keenam, strips him of the ball and the cardinals recover. jones would actually recover the fumble here, and it looked like that that might be the momentum turner for arizona. palmer on the 2nd and 9, but here we go. donald gets it right back. look at the strip right here. palmer never had a chance. he was under attack most of the afternoon by that rams front 7
5:04 pm
and 12 little pass to david and johnson, looks like he had a chance to score, goes down around the 5 yard line and the cardinals in position for the touchdown. they would come away with the field goal. then on a third and 6, meet me at the quarterback. palmer, look at the head just slammed down, kind of a whiplash effect. he would not return to the game. believe he's getting checked out for the concussion protocol. now, with five minutes left, austin on a punt. austin, the speedster making the rams did today and look at this. he picks up the face mask penalty and the rams are in position to win this football game. down 13-10. it's keenam to quick again. they work the side opposite patrick peterson and it's a touchdown. watch it again. this little back shoulder fade. beautiful throw. and the rams are up 17-13. drew stanton entered the game late. could he pull it off?
5:05 pm
out of the shotgun, second and 10, and hice picked off. interception. the rams defense holding this high-powered offense to just 13 points. you see the replay. man, what a long afternoon for the cards offense. they continue to struggle scoring in that first quarter and throughout the game. stanton, third and 10. final play of the game and thim he's picked off yet again by t.j. mcdonald and the game is over. and of the cardinals, they win 17-13 and the arizona cardinals fall to a record of 1-3. >> okay. obviously disappointed in the loss. we thought our guys played extremely hard and it would be a physical game, and i thought we matched that. i thought we were ready to play in all phases. there were big plays both ways. obviously the punt return attempt was huge.
5:06 pm
we didn't get the formatted offense that last conversion we needed, and then the punt return. critical plays. there were a lot of them. but i thought those were the ones that were big at the end. and there's a fourth quarter ballgame. you know, all our games with them have been fairly tight other than this one, and we are not panicking. we're going to show up for work tomorrow because we have a game thursday night against a very good team we don't have time to dwell on this one. we don't even have time to watch the film so we'll be at work at 8 houb in the morning trying to get better and get a win. the sky is not falling for us. i'm sure it is for a bunch of the fans. and i'm disappointed as they are, but we got a game thursday night. >> on the punt return, was that on -- [inaudible].
5:07 pm
carson is in the concussion protocol. other injuries, chris johnson was a groin. wraf branch was a groin. fells was a stinger. that's about all i have right now injury-wise. >> on the first and goal has been an issue early this season. we scored the first five times we were down there. it was today, you know, because we lost yards on the running play. >> looks like you guys were close a couple times to maybe pulling away this game. it was one thing after another, a fumble or a penalty. >> those were self-inflicted. those were the things that were disappointing because we were playing so hard, but those things added up.
5:08 pm
will, for the arizona cardinals. max starks, our nfl analyst, you played for many years with the purring steelers pittsburgh steelers, your first thoughts on this one. >> it's a tough one. it's a tough one because you consider that this is a division game. it's not afc. it's not just a general nfc game. this is a division game. this is a team you're going to see again and the division games are what matter, what puts you in a position ob in the talks for that thing that happens after december, which is the playoffs. is, and i think he alluded to it, there's only one loss in the division and it's your first nfc loss so in the grand scheme of things, this is the first quarter, but there's four quarters to a seen, and is it the finish you expected? no. you usually want to finish at last 500 at that point because this was a tough first four games for them. you wanted to finish at about 2-2, possibly 3-1. did not happen. there's no need to panic, but there are concerns. >> michael floyd, again, dropped passes.
5:09 pm
rallied behind that. if there's a little bit of a bright spot, john brown had a great game but i thought it was the accountability question for a guy like floyd, say, look, you gotta deliver the goods here. he didn't early on with this drop. >> yeah, early on, the ball was in his hands and he just gets hit and can't haul it all the way in and i think that was the frustrating thing. when you see as a fan, the ball is in his hands, it's a contract year. usually players step up and play huge. and michael floyd probably got inside his own head agos bit, but the one thing i do love is carson never gave up on him. carson came right back at him, fired that one into the red zone. he hauls in the catch. and then what do you do in this situation, go right for him again for the touchdown to give them that tie that we were looking for because we were worried a little while, like, are they going to get in the end zone? michael floyd comes in, delivers a great catch. carson puts it right in the
5:10 pm
throwing some darts on that one. so i think that was the biggest thing is that, you know, it's still slow starting. they need to get a faster-starting offense because this is what we anticipated with them was that last year, everything started fast. played with the league. now they're playing more so, playing from behind, trying to catch up and find that motivation. i think that was the biggest thing that we're missing right now. >> you pointed this out. the pressure is on carson, not just in this game but all season long. again this afternoon. >> carson was under duress. you just look here. just multiple guys just tackling at and around his legs. he's getting hit up top. and the offensive line has to find a way to just get on the same page right here with that strip sack by aaron donald. d.j. humphies gets beat right off the snap, and there's not even a chance for carson to step up and throw the ball away and it happened everywhere.
5:11 pm
aaron donald made a living in the background. sims as well. this is the one that potentially put him in the concussion protocol, and eugene simms again delivering the shot and forcing his head to kind of bounce off the pavement. but he's been taking these shots for two weeks now in a row. he's been hit i would have to say at least 20 times in the last two games. if you want to be a successful team, you want to be good at what you're doing, you have to minimize the hits on your quarterback. this is a franchise guy and when he gets time, he absolutely decimates and destroys defenses with his passing, but if he's under duress, having to move, getting hit on every play -- >> he is beat up without question. all right. let's get to the secondary for the cardinals because brian quick had a career-type day. there were opportunities there, and the rams took advantage of
5:12 pm
peterson was on one side of the ball, go to the opposite side of number 2001 and he went for marcus cooper. now, i can't get upset about marcus cooper wanting to jump on this route and trying to make a play, but the problem is when you jump on a route, you potentially give up the back side and tony jefferson out of position and brian gets quickly to the end zone on that play but this was something we saw as a theme throughout the day. just missed cues by the defensive secondary, whether it was between jefferson, or mathew or peterson on a couple of switchoffs because they were trying to find different ways of getting the receivers open. right here, comes quick across the coverage, runs the quick out after he gets set and marcus cooper is in great position but he just could not go against what brian quick was trying to do. throwing the back shoulder fade and quick turns back towards it and keenam put it in a place where only brian quick was going to catch that ball and he does.
5:13 pm
where they're right there but they're just maybe an inch or two off on what they're supposed to do and unfortunately in this league you can't give them that one or two minutes. >> max, you played for bruce arians and i don't know if there's a better guy that understands adversity on the pro level than bruce arians. how does he talk to his team and how does he move forward with a short week at the san francisco 49ers? >> you gotta erase it because this is another division game and you have to get rid of this feeling. you get normally 24 hours to wa well, right here you only get 12 hours because wednesday you're on a plane to san francisco so it's like hey, whatever we did, that's in the past. we have a new game plan for san francisco and we need to win. >> that's the very latest from max stark's perspective. we're going to head out to university stadium, hear more from richard saenz, check on thes condition of palmer and some of the other key injuresies. stay with us. the cardinals lose to the rams
5:14 pm
more coverage as we continue our newscast right here on fox 10. thank you, guys. so i'm focusing in on the two words that max said. don't panic. i'm not going to panic. yet. >> yet. good luck. >> yes. it has certainly been a soggy sunday for a lot of folks in the valley. >> yeah. we came in this morning and stayed throughout the day. heavy rain as a line of storms moved through the area. fox 10's cristi siefkin tracking the we didn't get a lot of rain in the valley, but some pockets got a couple tenths of an inch as a result of this storm system. let's take you over to the maps. i'll show you what we're talking about. not only rain, but also gusty winds, and we'll go ahead and track that for you. here we go. we've got our maps up for you. you'll notice that band of moisture pushing from southwestern arizona to northeastern arizona. as we continue to the evening hours, these storms are going to diminish but southeastern
5:15 pm
scattered activity tonight. here in the valley, things pretty quiet, though. most of that moisture concentrated in the southeast valley. up into parts of payson, the band of moisture continues to move north, and holbrooke picking up some scattered activity as well. so not a washout storm but with this storm system moving through, we're also seeing very gusty winds and we're seeing the potential for some blowing gusts out there. so that said, that's why we have this air quality warning for far southwestern arizona. that's going to last until 9:00 this if you have any breathing problems, you want to stay inside, could be a lot of coarse particles in the air and then as we look to northern arizona, that's where we have a wind advisory in effect until 3:00 in the morning. still some very gusty winds out there. we'll talk about the potential for more rain in your valley forecast coming up a little bit later on in the show. >> thanks, kristy. still ahead, a fox 10 news alert at a valley intersection where one boy was badly hurt in a suspected dui crash.
5:18 pm
a 6-year-old boy has died. what a sad story unfolding on this sunday as a six-year-old boy has died after he was injured in a suspected dui crash. >> and officers are saying the victim was with three other children in the bed of a pickup truck when that truck was hit by a car. >> fox 10's marcy jones is live at 40th street and broadway. marcy, what's the latest? >>reporter: guys, this is the aftermath after crash here. it's still shut down at the intersection. now, that truck right was just on its side. they had the tow truck kind of move it up. this is just the very slow process of the police really combing through all the evidence, trying to put together exactly what led up to this crash. now, the focus should be on that young boy who lost his life and the three other children and other adult that was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition.
5:19 pm
to even understand who was related, if they're friends, or what, you know, the events surrounding. all we around 3 minutes... police say it just doesnt pediatrics. >>reporter: police responded to a serious clicollision on broad and 40th street. the children are in extremely critical condition, adding that it's just too early to draw conclusions. >> the police officers they have a long arduous process of through the investigative portion of this, and everything is taped off, so it's really hard to see and to gain access as to what's going on. >>reporter: while the cause of the accident is still unknown, the phoenix fire captain says it's a reminder that driving is such a huge responsibility, and to be especially cautious with young passengers. >> we see this stuff every day, and we care for our community so much and that's why we're always championing the message of, you

don't text and drive, pay attention, it starts raining, the roads get slick, and not saying any of these were a contributing factor but, you know, this is just stuff that happens often and it's a bad deal. >>reporter: phoenix police are now saying that the male driver suspected of causing this accident could be looking at charges of possible aggravated assault and manslaughter. reporting live, marcy jones, fox 10 news. showers makin through the valley earlier, and we're seeing a huge storm make its way toward florida. will the hurricane affect folks in that section of the country? i'll tell you coming up in just a few minutes. also still ahead, a number of donald trump campaign signs that have been tampered with, but other signs have been left alone.
5:23 pm
guys, seeing a lot of activity off the coastline of florida. actually, all the way out to the bahamas. hurricane matthew, what we've been tracking the past couple of days, it's going to have a big impact not only on the islands, but potentially on florida as well. category going to bring mud slides, flash floods. it's expected to stay pretty strong as it moves monday into tuesday, and in terms of how it will affect florida, we're not quite sure yet but we could see some significant rainfall as a result of that system. but back to arizona, beautiful outside right now. 76?. the winds, a little bit breezy, though. 14 miles an hour out of the east and we saw our own surge of moisture earlier today. some rain drops for the morning and the afternoon across several places in the states.
