fox 10 news at 9:00 starts now. >> this has been by far the most painful experience ever. >> it's happened again, a warning tonight from a local man badly burned by a product many people use. good evening, everyone. thanks for joining us. first on fox tonight, a man who is giving up vaping after a horrible experience. >> the battery in his e-cigarette exploded in his pocket, and it started a fire that burned his body, a danielle miller is live outside the arizona burn center where that man was treated. this is a pretty scary thought. >> absolutely, kari and john. you know, we see it so many times in the national media but right here in the valley with this man, now he did spend several hours here at the burn units for his treatment, and the majority of his left thigh had second-degree burns, and he's telling us tonight that he's actually stopping this vaping

you are about to see in this package might be a little graphic. >> this has happened, and this has been by far the most painful experience ever. >> reporter: september 5th was a typical day at work for shiloh, that was, he says, until a spare battery in his pocket for his e-cigarette exploded. >> i was walking behind the counter, going to help my boss with something, and i had fire coming out of my pants. it was like the flare. i didn't know what to do, so i kind of freaked out a little bit, and just started hitting my pants thinking it was going to go out. >> the man went straight to the burn unit for treatment. the fire burned through his pants, singed his hair and caused second degree burns. >> it was probably a little over 60 seconds that it was actually

>> the scars will most likely always remain. he says because of this incident, for him, ecigs are now a thinking of the past. >> after that experience, i would rather be safe and sorry, and especially being that i have got two little ones to watch out for. if i don't feel safe around it, i wouldn't want them to be around it. >> and he has been looking for an attorney to possibly seek some legal action here, but telling us that tonight he's having a little bit of trouble because every attorney he's spoken to says there is a lack of evidence, because the battery was completely burned. reporting live, danielle miller, fox 10 news. >> we are learning about a similar incident out of florida. this happened on a harry potter ride at universal studios in orlando. an e-cigarette exploded in someone's pocket, and a fireball shot out, hitting another rider, a teenaged girl who suffered

seven construction workers recovering tonight after getting hurt at a church they were working on in queen creek. and they were working on the roof of the heart pride church, all of this going down this afternoon when a truss gave way, and they fell some 16 feet to the ground. two workers suffered serious injuries. the pastor of the church posted a video message on facebook after the accident. >> we want to make sure we make this all about the workers, all about helping them and praying for them. and are going to be helping them way beyond today, no matter what happens, so be in prayer for those families. state safe investigators are trying to figure out what caused that truss to collapse. we are getting new details in a tragic story out of peoria where a five-month-old baby died after being left in a hot car for several hours. police say baby israel was 18-year-old garcia's nephew.

23-year-old monique avila were supposed to be watching the baby yesterday afternoon while the mother was at work, but police say the baby was left in the car for several hours, telling police that they simply forgot the baby in the vehicle. although it was a little bit cooler than it had been, the temperature inside that car reached nearly 105 degrees. >> that's heartbreaking because i have kids and i'm watching everything that they do. i have a 7-year-old, and i'm like, where is he at? where is my baby what is my baby doing? a five-month-old baby, i don't understand. >> in the meantime, the coworkers of the baby's mother set up a gofundme account to help the family with costs. we are learning more about a crash over the weekend that killed a 6-year-old boy. a man not even old enough to drink has been arrested in connection with case.

beers, and using cocaine in the hours leading up to that crash. it happened yesterday at 40th street and broadway. police say the 6-year-old boy who was killed was riding in the back of a truck bed with two other children when they were hit. the other two kids were okay. the caribbean and parts of florida are bracing for a very powerful storm headed their way, millions of people in the direct path of hurricane matthew. the storm hurricane. people in jamaica, haiti, cuba and the bahamas are battening down the hatches. >> this is what it looks like from space, nasa sending back the images from the international space station. and dave munsey has been tracking the hurricane. he joins us live with the latest. >> this has already been a category 5. it could back to being a category 5, especially when it gets over the bahamas. the water is very, very warm

we'll take a look at our full weather, coming up. a crown craze is sweeping the nation, but these costume characters are being used to prank and in some cases scare innocent people. from online threats that are closing schools to clown attacks occurring in broad daylight. >> he just kept squeezing and he said i should just go ahead and kill you now. >> rep victims are calling for help after they spot these circus performers lurking in the shadows. >> what is your emergency? >> there is a clown in the woods beside my house, a clown. >> reporter: and while clowns are supposed to make you happy, police across the country say these attacks are not funny. >> it's not something that's a laughing matter. it's not a game. >> reporter: from virginia to florida and even in arizona, no one can figure out what's behind the clown crime wave.

>> and it seems that these creepy clown stories are popping up everywhere. >> so how is it affecting the real clowns out there? we sent a reporter to find out, and she joins us live. steph? >> yeah, kari and john. this is almost starting to sound like urban folklore, and a local entrainment clown that i spoke with today says it is not funny at all, wasting time for law enforcement, but also hurting real clowns like herself, who are very passionate about what they do, dressing up for parties and bringing joy to kids life. kathy scott, or better known as sweet petunia when she is clowning running az clowns here in the valley. she doesn't like that her profession of more than 20 years is being used as a twisted way to scare and commit crimes.

>> reporter: but recent headlines paint a drastically different story about clowns, in addition to violent clown threats being called into schools, kids being chased, and in some cases, clowns trying to lure kids into the woods with candy. >> i would be nervous if i saw a clown right now with what's been going on with the weirdos. >> my friend told me she saw on clowns are at high schools, kinder through fifth school, and she told me that they are going to kill every school and stuff like that. >> reporter: here in the valley, two recent robberies involved criminals in clown masks. she worries about the entertainment industry amid this creepy clown fad and worries that they could be hurt. >> we don't want any harm to

they would stop. >> reporter: in fact, kathy tells me that when she was at parties this weekend, kids appeared to be a little bit standoffish. she had a couple of extra tricks for them to warm up to her, saying things like you're the good clown, not the bad one from tv, talking about clowns they have seen in the news trying to scare kids. here in phoenix, police say a dozen schools have been threatened, leading to the arrest of while kids think it's funny to get involved in this fad, it's obviously not being taken lightly by authorities. a mesa man accused of using facebook and uber to have a sexual relationship with an underaged girl. police say 19-year-old joseph lopez started communicating with a 14-year-old on facebook and on at least one occasion, police say he sent an uber to the

lopez was arrested during a traffic stop with the victim in the car with him at the time. he faces several charges including sexual abuse. state capitol is lit up purple tonight in honor of the beginning of domestic violence awareness month, governor doug ducey and many others gathering in downtown phoenix for tonight's event, which was hosted by the governor's office of youth, family and faith. domestic violence survivors also sharing their stories. >> the domestic violence is nondiscriminating, and all encompassing, reaching beyond our own stereotypes of what a victim is or looks like. domestic violence takes place in a domestic situation but is universal >> meanwhile, home depot is selling purple light bulbs at all of their arizona locations,

apache junction, 73 in chandler. in glendale we have 77 degrees right now. a little high pressure moving in, kind of pushing the moisture out. it's not really going to overwarm things. they will warm up a degree or two in a few days here. 86 degrees on the high right now or on the high today. at buckeye we had 84. in scottsdale, we had 83. other numbers would be 69 at prescott, 70 at payson, 73 in sedona, 86 degees tay bend, 88 degrees at yuma. 71 degrees at 10:00 and that temperature coming down throughout the night tonight, and then you will see as morning rises right in the low 60s, going to be a real good early morning, nice and chilly for you at 62 degrees. 86 degrees for the high today, 67 was this morning's low. 94 and 70 would be the normal high and low.

105, your record low at 49. as we get look here at the forecast highs tomorrow, the low 80s, mid-80s, even some 70s in the valley forecast. we do see 71 up at flagstaff, 63 at the grand canyon. it will be in the mid-60s at gila bend. and 90 degrees at yuma. at show low, 64 degrees. we have cold weather and we have snow mixing it up across montana and oregon as cold temperatures for overnight lows coming up in the 30s and 40s and that snow, they actually have a winter storm warning in montana. there's more, yeah, they have freezing rain coming down, but we are not done yet. they also have thunderstorms mixed in with all of that and you can see that storm system, watch it coming out of that area and then into the dakotas, that's a pretty good line of storms that we're dealing with right there. and then more showers up to two inches in some places across florida, and then one more look at matthew. matthew, of course, a hurricane

truck. then he drove himself to the hospital. doctors say, amazingly, no permanent damage was done and he will recover. you may experience some longer wait times while trying to get on to state route 51 because a.d.o.t. is testing red lights at the entrance ramps right now. that project will affect drivers only in the northbound lanes for the next three weeks, so the on-ramps going northbound, that's where you're going to see this. the new technology will adjust the amount of time that traffic will wait at those they will only wait a few seconds longer, but a.d.o.t. is hoping that the project will actually let the flow of traffic work better and shorten the commute in the future. >> what will happen is the ramp meter lights will adjust to the traffic on the highway, and that's determined by what we call loop detectors that are in the highway that find out how many vehicles or the overall load on the freeway and the speed of the freeway. that information gets to the metering system, and if the

>> it was honestly like a flare stuck in my pocket when it ignited and discharged. my whole -- i lost half of my pant leg completely from the burn. >> september 5th was a typical day at work for shiloh. that was, until he says a spare battery in his pocket for his e-cigarette exploded. >> i was walking behind the counter, going to help my boss with something, and i had fire coming out of my pants. it was like the flare. i didn't know what to do, so i kind of freaked out a little bit and just started hitting my pants, like thinking it was going to go out. >> he went straight to the burn unit for treatment. the fire burned through his pants, singed his hair, and caused second degree burns. >> it was probably a good little over 60 seconds that it was actually on in my pocket on f fire, and it did quite a bit of damage afterwards.
