you see there is no screen in here. it popped out. it is down here on the ground. and the child fell 20 feet to the ground. pretty big fall on that window there especially for a little one it was a little boy. mesa police tell us the boy climbed on to a table in that home and then leaned against the window, the screen gave way and you saw it on the ground and the two-year-old's injuries non-life-threatening but is listed in serious condition. mesa police telling us an was present in the apartment at the time and there is no indication of any wrong doing in this case. take a good look at the sketch on your screen. police say this man tried to sexually assault a woman in peoria. the incident happened last wednesday in a housing development that's under construction near 99th avenue and jomax. the victim was working on one of the homes when the suspect this description attacked her. he is described as white or light skinned.

if you recognize him or have any idea who this is, call peoria police. an arrest over an unpaid restaurant bill leads to a murder conviction. 25-year-old michael cooper stabbed his roommate to death two years ago and today he pleaded guilty to murder and burglar charges. cooper admitting to the stabbing after being arrested. he will be sendtested next month. sentence next money. an elementary school. a special education teacher killed in a car crash last month and today the school held a special ceremony in her honor. kristy siefkin was there and joins us live. >> was obviously a tough day for both students and for faculty. their teacher asia calhoun was a special education teacher at western valley elementary. she was a published author who passed her love of reading on to her students and today faculty

her. >> calhoun and her best friend were killed in an auto accident outside of parker on september 24th. a driver tried to illegally pass their car. calhoun swerving to avoid the driver crashed head on into a semi truck. >> she was always just so full of life and so friendly to everyone. i can't recall an instance when she wasn't happy and just so approachable. >> she won't be here physically. she will always live heards and we will -- hearts and we will always love her. ?[ music ]? >> western valley elementary will start a scholarship fund in asia's honor and in the meantime dps needs your help finding the person who killed calhoun and fled the scene. the driver was last seen in a

95. this is outside of parker on saturday september 24th. if you have any information you are asked to call police. i'm kristy siefkin, "fox 10 news." it's the strongest atlantic hurricane we seen in years. matthew continues to batter the caribbean and florida and the east coast and they are bracing for the strong arrival. the strong storms arrival and evacuation orders are in effect. >> marc martinez is here with a look at the damage and the preparation for that damage. and it depends i forecasters are right or wrong. >> that's true and this hurricane has done a lot of damage at least a dozen people are dead after hurricane matthew made landfall in haiti. this is the fiercest caribbean storm in a decade. let's show you video from that area here. the u.s. national hurricane service is telling us that the strong winds, torrential rains and a storm surge with massive waves caused a significant amount of damage to the dominican republic and cuba. matthew is now a category 3 hurricane as it heads toward the

northern direction in florida here take a look at what's going on there. the governor telling people along the coast to get out now if they can and you can see a lot of people filling up sandbags. this is a familiar sight across that region. they are also boarding up their homes. a lot of beach homes and schools are closed. officials started ordering evacuations. south florida has not seen a major hurricane, category 3 or higher in 11 years. now let's look in charleston. they are getting ready there as well. you can see same pictures in south carolina. traffic is bumper to bumper as people flee. that's the main artery to get out of charleston. gasoline hard to come by and propane as well. half a dozen stations along the coast are out of fuel and you are seeing long lines at others as people just get ready for this residents also stocking up on necessary supplies. >> i'm stocking up on water. i'm not sure whether or not i'm heading out of town.

either way i figure i will have water when i return if i do leave. >> haiti, the clean up beginning after the storm passed through there. the u.n. calling this the worst humanitarian crisis to hit haiti since the earthquake in 2010. the storm packed winds of more than 100 miles per hour destroying towns, farmlands and resorts there. governors in florida, georgia, south carolina and north carolina, they declared states of emergency and a lot people are talking about this on social media. here are the posts that are coming from that area. let's take a look at this one. this one is showing the roads trying to get out of south carolina. look at this people are showing that traffic heading in that southern direction there. and it's quite a mess out there here is another one. this one was taken from a grocery store there. they said you couldn't find anything. those shelfs are empty. that's in a wal-mart there. here is another shot showing

it's running out as we have seen. and they are running out of gasoline. this one showing this one says nothing like putting premium in my ford focus because that's all that was left. so they are really trying to get ready and get out of there if they have to. there is another shot. people boarding up their homes and this one says our first hurricane as they boarded up their windows there and a final shot we will show you this says even the pelicans are freaking out. that's people taking photos of those birds flying out there. just a few of the things people are posting on social media. and a reminder, we will carry any news conferences about the storm on fox 10 news now. >> thank you, marc. >> so where is hurricane matthew now and where will he make landfall next. >> dave munsey is tracking it. what's the story? >> we have a category 3 hurricane right now. the winds aren't die -- are dying down a little bit.

once they get below 111, if they, do it will be a category 2. it hangs in at a category 3 right now. there is the winds at 115 miles per hour. and as we get you to look down friday is where we are looking at this thing at 130 miles per hour again. so they are expecting it to pick up a little bit of steam and there is the line as it lines up with friday. late on thursday evening and probably a little after midnight it is gng contact. not necessarily the eye, but the outer reaches of this hurricane will make its first contact. if there is any good news in this, it's the curve here. however, once it makes the curve, they aren't really sure what it's going to do. let's follow the moisture and see what's going on and we will take you up to friday and you can see the eye stays offshore. we get to friday about noon and then we take you up to saturday here it comes as it gets into

valley veterans continue valley veterans continue to die while waiting for care at the phoenix v.a. hospital. that's according to a new inspector general's report which shows the problems that put the hospital in the national spotlight two years ago have not been fixed. >> things actually may be a top v.a. official was in town today introducing new leadership at the hospital. will that change anything? fox 10's nicole garcia has reaction to the report. a top v.a. official began the introductions of the new director by coming to her defense. several state lawmakers are questioning her qualifications and selection. bringing up her past at the st. louis v.a. hospital where

dental equipment wasn't properly sterilized. >> when we looked at these issues we saw a leader who was decisive, acting with veterans' interests and capable managing this type of complex organization. >> the under secretary also speaking about a scathing inspector general's report released yesterday. the report showed 215 veterans died while waiting for care at the phoenix v.a. and that one of those vets may still had he received the care he was waiting for. >> the office of inspector general report we are taking various -- very seriously because it indicates we have more work to do and we have issues to address. i want to be perfectly clear, there is no evidence as has been reported in some cases that there were hundreds of veterans that died because of consult delays or canceled consults.

83 at cave creek. and 88 right now in ahwatukee. high pressure continues to dominate the west and the southwest. these are the sustained winds at 20 miles per hour in show low. and at st. johns. so they are blowing pretty good. we add the gusts to it and we go to 28 at show low. st. johns 24, 25 at window rock. up in sedona 26 miles per hour and flagstaff 29 miles per hour. so some pretty up there. thought we would take a look at the dew points. you can see they are way down into the 30s and 20s across the north. we see some 40s in our desert locations. 39 here in phoenix right now. so, yeah, the moisture is certainly coming out of the air. 90 today at sky harbor. 86 at buckeye. we had 86 at deer valley. and another 86 at gateway today. other numbers 71 at prescott. 78 at kingman.

low 64 degrees. 72 in payson with 89 degrees at gila bend. here is your day. 90 on the high. 63 on the low. 93 and 69 will be your normal high and low. record high 104. record low at 46. take a look here. these are the forecast highs on the day for tomorrow. you can see we will forecast up to 87. we do have some upper 80s in there. i was looking for a 90. i didn't see one. 72 is prescott. 62 in flagstaff. and 89 in casa grande. looking across the country, i will tell you it's a real mix bag. they have rain, snow and wind and now it's flooding across montana and into the dakotas is where the wind was. there was a 55-mile-per-hour wind gust in bismarck. up to two inches of rain in portions of northeastern oklahoma. you can see that storm system pushing out of there. but they had some good rain

115-mile-per-hour hurricane. matthew hanging around down in the gulf. and we have the wrong name on that. this is matthew here. skirting up that eastern seaboard. a lot of moisture. they are looking at eight to ten inches of rain. maybe 15-inches in some areas. and the temperature in that area is up today but it will be down over the next couple of days as that hurricane skirts the coast right there and you midsection of the country still very warm for this time of year in dallas. 94 today. 63 degrees overnight. 87 degrees for tomorrow. and then take a look here. got those 90s making their triumphant return. they won't hang around long and you can see the end of the ten day there low 90s.

demand for the cave was such that our current facility couldn't possibly meet all of the folks that wanted to come through. so with a lot of thought and a little bit of courage, we decided to make the dive and we now purchased a five acre lot. >> started the foundation in 2009 after giving colten a ride in the infamous replica bat mobile. colten then sick with cancer has been an inspiration since. >> i tell people, this is my time with colten. every time i'm here i'm are getting to experience the same thing he experienced. >> 217 families have visited the crime fighting cave in the past few years. the plan is to build one that is seven times its size to help even more. >> the bigger cave we will be able to help people a lot more families will be able to have other programs and have schools come in and teach them about philanthropy. >> double the mason jars and double the donations.

sheriff paul babeu was headmaster at desisto school in massachusetts. a boarding school rife with abuse. a lot of things went down that probably shouldn't have. this isn't about abuse or neglect, because none of this was found. except these records show the state found it, students and parents testified about it, and a judge ordered it to stop. the cornering, the sheeting, i didn't know how to i'll end with that, thank you so much.
