fox 10 news at noon starts now. >> well, good afternoon, everyone. thank you for joining us. right now hurricane matthew continues to pummel the florida coast frnl . >> the storm has already killed 300 at least 2 million people in the southeastern united states have been warned to flee inland. >> today we have team coverage as the storm batters florida and makes its way to florida. we start things off with crystal clark in coco beach florida. >> hurricane matthew may be north in brevard county, but you can't tell by the fierce winds. look at how strong the current still is, and how high the water reaches, nearly to the top of the bridge crossing into coco

just how strong 100-mile-an-hour winds are. all of the scattered wood planks that you see used to be part of a duck at the sun set cafe. the dock ran all the way behind the restaurant but at this point almost every bit of it has been destroyed. we drove through the city and found other signs of damage, like street signs hanging on by a limb, as well as other bu ground. the main concern is active power lines hanging down in the roadways. they are asking residents to remain inside until very busy utility crews are able to get out here and repair those lines. they say it still is not safe despite the hurricane being out of this area. in coco beach, crystal clark, fox news. >> now, the strongest winds, believe it or not, have actually stayed offshore. however, a gust of 107 miles an hour was clocked at cape

kennedy space center. and of course they will be inspecting for damage over the next day or two. more than 800,000 people at the peak have lost power. rain from the storm is stretching all the way up to south carolina and georgia. fox news's caroline shively is in savannah where the storm is headed next. >> people here in savannah brace for the worst as hurricane matthew pummels florida. >> if you are in an area that has been told to evacuate and that you still have time to evacuate, i want to personally plea with you to get out right now. >> the most powerful storm to threaten the east coast in more than a decade batters the florida coast. matthew hitting the state with high winds and heavy rains, knocking out power for hundreds of thousands. >> we are very concerned about storm surge, and the worst effects are still likely to come. >> officials urging some 2 million people along the

ground. that includes folks in south carolina, where matthew is expected to bring high storm surges. >> it doesn't matter that you don't have a beach front home. you could be impacted by the storm surge well inland. you need to be aware of that. >> president obama declaring a state of emergency in florida, south carolina, and here in georgia, where the governor put the entire coast under evacuation orders. it's the first hurricane evacuation on the georgia coast since 1999. >> do not be a hold out here because we can property, but we can't replace lives. >> officials here in the south have been warning people to take this storm seriously for days. it has already proven a deadly force in haiti, killing hundreds. in savannah, georgia, i'm caroline shively, fox news. all right. well, let's take a look here at where this storm is headed at this hour. let's go straight to the maps here, and you'll see where hurricane matthew has really started to line up on the east coast of florida. as it continues on north, it

it was expected to gain some momentum along with some of those warm waters there in the atlantic, but it did not, and it remained a category 3, and then it will continue to move towards charleston, of course, and we have heard about some of the evacuations taking place in georgia as well, and here's some new information just in. a little bit farther to the southeast, there is another tropical storm, tropical storm nicole, and this is south bermuda about 345 miles or so. matthew is about 120 miles an hour winds, nicole 105 miles an hour winds, and the concern here is that the two will again, gain strength, merge, circle round and then of course what's at stake here is the tip, the southern tip of florida. so that's the concern right now, of course, ron. we are watching this very closely as we have been for the last 24-48 hours. >> okay. well, it's, you know, you see

most recent on september 2nd at his next door neighbor's house. investigators say he put gasoline on a map and lit the mop on fire. he faces charges of arson and endangerment. phoenix firefighters battled another pretty big fire overnight, this 1 near 7th street and broadway. the damage to the home was pretty bad, no one lives at the home but since the home was empty investigators are now trying to figure out what led to the fire. a heartbreaking discovery for a phoenix family, their home burglarized and the family d the mo lar family came back home month only to discover their house had been burglarized. somebody stole thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and electronics, but what's even worse is then their young son, a teenage boy, went into the backyard and found the family dog dead. he had been gunned down. phoenix police say this is the killer, that man who is using a credit card that was stolen from the home at the burglary. if you have any idea who he is, please call silent witness right

you can remain anonymous. a new report shows more illegal immigrants are making their way across the border than originally thought. an internal department of homeland security report shows only 54% of people who entered illegally were captured. that's much lower than the 81% rate that homeland security cited publicly using a different accounting method. an update from a sto brought you yesterday as dozens of people are given licenses for new medical marijuana dispensaries after more than 750 applications were submitted over the summer. there are currently already 99 dispensaries in the state. approximately 95,000 people have medical marijuana cards in arizona. well, coming up, indian tribes throughout this state are about to be much safer thanks to some federal grants.

their community safe. then a woman swims for more than two straight days in lake powell. what was going on? why did she do it? sheriff paul babeu was headmaster at desisto school in massachusetts. a boarding school rife with abuse. a lot of things went down that probably shouldn't have. this isn't about abuse or neglect, because none of this was found. except these records show the state found it, students and parents testified about it, and a judge ordered it to stop. the cornering, the sheeting, i didn't know how to live and function as a normal human being.

they think she used a bottle of hair spray to set the fire in the bedroom. the homeowner tells us she was supposed to pick up some of the things that he left in the garage for her. she now faces arson and criminal damage charges. new at noon, more than a dozen tribes in arizona will receive more than a million dollars in federal grant funding, $6 million of those grants awarded to tribes along enforcement agencies, meant to increase safety on reservations by hiring officers, purchasing equipment and helping victims of crime. a separate tribe received four grants worth almost $2 million to improve services for victims of domestic violence, sex assault and stalking. a colorado woman completes an 82-mile swim right across lake powell. she did it in 56 hours. sara thomas didn't stop swimming or get out of the water for but

this swim qualified her for a record in an unassisted marathon swim, with 13 people traveling with her by boat to deliver her food approximately every half hour. she says it was a difficult swim and it was difficult to walk afterwards with her feet and body shaking. maricopa county animal shelters in separate need of adoptions. they cut euthanasias by two thirds compared to last year, but it also mean space is filling up. multiple dogs are being kept in single kennels and the no-kill shelters that the county is working with are also filling up quickly. >> right now we have about 460 big dogs in 240 kennels. it's what the public wanted. we are happy to do it but now we need the public to help us so that we can maintain it, we can

here is that they find a forever home, on the couch in somebody's home for a few days, welcomed into a loving family, and the services in the state have the capacity to take on more lost and stray animals that are undoubtedly going to be in a situation where they are homeless after this storm. >> we'll see how it all plays out. the east coast, the various states are helping each other out as power crews from maryland make their way down to florida and georgia today, just to try of thousands. good afternoon. all right. ron, and everyone else, good morning to you, and good afternoon. let's go ahead and take a look at some of these maps here. we'll talk about what hurricane matthew is doing at this time and what we can expect over the next 12-24 hours, so we have been seeing how this hurricane is really hugging the coastline of florida. and as we continue on through

tonight it's expected to hit as you can see, closer to the line, the coastline there of georgia, and then as we cruise on into the overnight hours, and it continues its path, its expected forecasted path, it's going to cruise on into charleston by tomrrow morning, 8:00 a.m., but you can see that it's hugging the line here of north carolina as well, right up here, these were islands, very popular for a lot of kite sufficient -- surfe surfers, all of the cities along the coastline under a hurricane warning at this hour. let me read you the cities, because i was quite surprised as to how many. let's start down with the florida area, and you will see it's melbourne, daytona beach, jacksonville, brunswick, savannah, charleston, wilmington, and it will give you a good idea of how much we are talking about in terms of the people that will be affected by hurricane matthew, and so we are watching that over the next 24-48 hours, of course, and then the other big concern is

not they will together gain strength and then make the rounds back towards the southern tip of florida where of course more of miami would be affected by that. but let's talk about our weather here briefly, very nice outside, 89 degrees, very pleasant out for a friday, kind of ringing in the weekend here, clear skies for the most part, slight chance of rain as we head on into the morning hours tomorrow, very scattered, not anything to be too worried about, futurecast 7:35 tonight in from the bottom. most of the storms will drift on into new mexico. most of the action tomorrow morning will be in eastern arizona, as well as central and northern part of our state as well. temperatures right now across the state, 65 in page, nine -- 79 in page, pretty nice up in the white mountains as well, show low at 61 degrees, so very nice, mostly 80s around the valley at this hour. temperatures across the country, you can see quite nice, for the
