fox 10 news at 9:00 starts now. thanks for joining us. at this time last night, we were reporting on breaking news, a massive fire that was destroying a gilbert apartment complex under construction. that fire spread so fast that people living near the fire were forced to tonight firefighters are talking about what caused this inferno to jump from a first alarm to a four-alarm fire in the blink of an eye. stefania okolie reports on this developing story. stefania? >> yeah, that's right, linda. investigators say it was all about what was up in the apartment buildings. construction crews just had up the wood, so that made fire burn very fast and very easily.

alarm fire jumps to a four-alarm fire and gilbert fire rescue crews were battling these ferocious flames, four apartment buildings destroyed, three of them ultimately collapsing. the fire spreading not only because of the intense heat but the framework, mostly plywood. without drywall you up, the rate at which flames spread is drastically different. it's much spread so quickly. we just gathered the animals and got out. >> buildings nearby were evacuated, families forced to wait on the corners. >> we felt very stranded. we didn't have any of our belongings, our phones. >> i was pretty freaked out. it was pretty overwhelming. >> the scene like what we saw back in april at gilbert road. the frame made the fires hotter

in neither of these massive fire was anybody hate, today neighbors feeling thankful as well. >> no one passed away in this, and for that i'm exciting and going to praise god today. >> reporter: the fire was ruled accidental. as for last night's fire, the atf and fire investigators have to come back out again tomorrow when the safe to go inside to figure out what exactly caused that fire. of course when we get that up to date, we'll be sure to let you okolie, fox 10 news. >> thanks, stefania. new at 9:00, a glendale family will have to find a new place to stay after a fire ripped through their home. now the blaze happened near 47th avenue and bethany home road. according to fire officials, the flames started in the backyard on a grill. the flames then went up into the eves and into the attic. fire crews were able to contain the flames to the attic and prevent it from spreading. we spoke with a woman who was

in the election when she first saw the flames. >> and i saw the smoke and i thought somebody was having a cookout since it's sunday and there's a lot of games going on, but as i looked closer and started walking i see the red flames on the roof, and that's when i grabbed my phone, called 911 and ran to the door to see if everyone was okay. >> neighbors say that the family just moved into this home a few months ago. thankfully, no one was hurt by the fire. now on to an apart that left one woman without a place to live. this happened near 12th street and indian school road. an apartment unit caught fire after the woman living there reported hearing a loud noise. and as she was able to get out with one of her dogs, but sadly another dog and three of her cats are missing tonight. crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to other units. one woman was sent to the hospital however. it's still unclear if her injuries are related to that fire. the cause of the blaze still

two teenagers and a 20-year-old are sent to the hospital after they overdosed. now, this happened earlier this evening in glendale. now, this is near 44th avenue and ocatillo road. police say these teenagers were using some kind of narcotics and were unresponsive but they have since awakened. so far no word on what they were using. the case remains under investigation. gathered at the newly dedicated arizona fallen firefighters memorial. it's located at the wesley bolen plaza, and it honors those who have died on the job. fox 10's courtney griffin was there. she has more. ? god bless america ? >> reporter: since 1902, 119 arizona firefighters and paramedics have died in the line of duty. now their names are engraved in

inside through the chimney. i've never done that. this guy was trapped for four hours before a neighbor heard hm calling for help and called 911. firefighters then lowered a rope into the chimney, and as you can see, they were able to slowly get him out. they say he was far enough down that his feet were actually touching the floor of the house, but he was, oh, i like that. i didn't see that picture before. it's a sigh of relief and a hug of he was just so wedged in he couldn't get himself out. that's good to see. he was not harmed. the buffalo chips restaurant reopened this weekend following that devastating fire that happened almost one year ago. the buffalo chip reopened with help from the community, a lot of help, actually. people donated historic items to make a wall of relics of the things that were lost in the fire. this new building is connected to parts of the building that

little more unsettled. we have seen some cold weather across the rockies but things are kind of quiet now. this is the main feature, this big storm that continues to lash at the coast of washington and oregon. and it looks like it is just about done doing so. so things will start to calm down here over the next days. tonight, 70 for lake havasu, 50 for prescott and casa grande. tomorrow 87 in looks like low 90s or upper 80s for the rest of the desert parts of the state. so off we go then into that forecast for the next week and a half. it looks pretty nice. we'll keep the 90s going, just about the average, maybe a couple of degrees warmer than te usual, but no significant weather makers on the near horizon, so i have a feeling that over the next couple of days, you're going to find things looking pretty swell. >> swell. >> and really kind of in the happiness business, linda. >> yes, you are.

fox 10 news is back. arizona just one of several states that has begun early voting and, as fox news reporter bryan llenas tells us, all of this early voting is prompting candidates to increase their campaign have been cast around the country, 36 states and washington, dc allow early voting before election day, and it continues to increase in popularity. more than 45 million people are expected to vote early this year. that's about 40% of all total votes expected to be cast, and so far early voting shows positive signs for hillary clinton. battleground north carolina has been accepting absentee ballots since september 9th.

38% are from republicans, and 37% are from democrats. at this point in the 2012 election, republicans had a 2-1 lead in absentee ballots, a good sign for democrats. in battleground florida, more than 477,000 absentee ballots have been returned. 2.5 million absentee ballots have been requested by floridians. 40% from republicans and 39% from democrats, another positive sign for 2008 republicans led in ballot requests 50-32%. but there are encouraging signs for donald trump in battleground ohio. over a million absentee ballots have been requested but there are declines in heavily democratic counties like franklin and cuyahoga. white voter ballot requests up and minority voter ballot requests are down. the majority of states begin early in-person voting after
