fox 10 news at 9:00 starts now. thanks for joining us. at this time last night, we were reporting on breaking news, a massive fire that was destroying a gilbert apartment complex under construction. that fire spread so fast that people living near the fire were forced to evacuate.

to jump from a first alarm to a four-alarm fire in the blink of an eye. stefania okolie reports on this developing story. stefania? >> yeah, that's right, linda. investigators say it was all about what was up in the apartment buildings. construction crews just had up the wood, so that made fire burn very fast and very easily. in a matter of minutes, a single alarm fire fire and gilbert fire rescue crews were battling these ferocious flames, four apartment buildings destroyed, three of them ultimately collapsing. the fire spreading not only because of the intense heat but the framework, mostly plywood. without drywall you up, the rate at which flames spread is drastically different. it's much faster. >> within a few minutes, it had

got out. >> buildings nearby were evacuated, families forced to wait on the corners. >> we felt very stranded. we didn't have any of our belongings, our phones. >> i was pretty freaked out. it was pretty overwhelming. >> the scene like what we saw back in april at gilbert road. the frame made the fires hotter and fast spreading. in neither of these massive fire neighbors feeling thankful as well. >> no one passed away in this, and for that i'm exciting and going to praise god today. >> reporter: the fire was ruled accidental. as for last night's fire, the atf and fire investigators have to come back out again tomorrow when the safe to go inside to figure out what exactly caused that fire. of course when we get that up to date, we'll be sure to let you know. live in the studio, i'm stefania okolie, fox 10 news.

new at 9:00, a glendale family will have to find a new place to stay after a fire ripped through their home. now the blaze happened near 47th avenue and bethany home road. according to fire officials, the flames started in the backyard on a grill. the flames then went up into the eves and into the attic. fire crews were able to contain the flames to the attic and prevent it from spreading. we spoke with a woman who was out trying to get people to vote in the election when she first saw the flames. >> and i saw the smoke and i thought somebody was having a cookout since it's sunday and there's a lot of games going on, but as i looked closer and started walking i see the red flames on the roof, and that's when i grabbed my phone, called 911 and ran to the door to see if everyone was okay. >> neighbors say that the family just moved into this home a few months ago. thankfully, no one was hurt by the fire. now on to an apartment fire that left one woman without a

this happened near 12th street and indian school road. an apartment unit caught fire after the woman living there reported hearing a loud noise. and as she was able to get out with one of her dogs, but sadly another dog and three of her cats are missing tonight. crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to other units. one woman was sent to the hospital however. it's still unclear if her injuries are related to that fire. the cause of the blaze still under investigation. two teenagers 20-year-old are sent to the hospital after they overdosed. now, this happened earlier this evening in glendale. now, this is near 44th avenue and ocatillo road. police say these teenagers were using some kind of narcotics and were unresponsive but they have since awakened. so far no word on what they were using. the case remains under investigation. well, tododay hundreds

arizona fallen firefighters memorial. it's located at the wesley bolen plaza, and it honors those who have died on the job. fox 10's courtney griffin was there. she has more. ? god bless america ? >> reporter: since 1902, 119 arizona firefighters and paramedics have died in the line of duty. now their names are engraved in stone, and they will forever be a part of history. >> the servants is that we will remember. this is part of the remembrance. this allows families to have a place to come to see their father, brother, cousin, whatever it happens to be. >> charlene richards works for the department and her husband was with phoenix fire for 25 years. she says though he has passed on, she'll come here to remember him. >> i'll be here every year from

17th avenue and washington street. if you would like to donate to the effort, you can head to fox10phoenix.com. we have a link there. well, as long as everyone is okay, i thought this was the story of the day. it was actually pretty funny. firefighters in tuscon freeing this guy after he was stuck in his chimney this morning. fire officials say that 26-year-old locked himself out of his house. hey, i've done that. but then he tried to get back inside i've never done that. this guy was trapped for four hours before a neighbor heard hm calling for help and called 911. firefighters then lowered a rope into the chimney, and as you can see, they were able to slowly get him out. they say he was far enough down that his feet were actually touching the floor of the house, but he was, oh, i like that. i didn't see that picture before. it's a sigh of relief and a hug of gratitude there. he was just so wedged in he

that's good to see. he was not harmed. the buffalo chips restaurant reopened this weekend following that devastating fire that happened almost one year ago. the buffalo chip reopened with help from the community, a lot of help, actually. people donated historic items to make a wall of relics of the things that were lost in the fire. this new building is connected to parts of the building that were not destroyed in the fire. people visiting say excited to see the bar back up and running. >> i think it's amazing. i think it's going to be amazing. i think the new building is amazing. i think larry is going to do, you know, more things for the community. i think it's just wonderful. >> reporter: the restaurant caught fire and nearly burned to the ground on thanksgiving day of last year. in the mood for a taco? well, these people certainly were today. this is the valley's taco

liquid overnight. there's even spray paint on the outside, referring to, quote, nazi republicans. no one was hurt, but police are alerting other party offices. we are learning tonight more about what could be an illegal move by a member of the clinton state department team to influence the fbi's investigation into her e-mail scandal. fox news reporter has the state department executive patrick kennedy. >> to your knowledge, did anyone associated with secretary clinton or her campaign ask or instruct kennedy to see classification of e-mails? >> absolutely not. i have no knowledge that that happened. absolutely not. >> late friday, the fbi sent a third batch of interviews from the clinton investigation to the house intelligence and government oversight committees. republican lawmakers briefed by staffers say kennedy wanted the classification of at least one

ready for a big week. it's going to be great out there. we are in for some really nice temps, if you love it warm, and if you didn't, you wouldn't be here. because we have got more nineties on the way. here's your story, beautiful night across phoenix, and the temp slowly falling, we are in the mid-80s right now, and not much of a breeze out there, so get ready for kind of a still night. this big huge area of high pressure continues to anchor itself over us, and it will be our constant companion here for the next several days, this heavier weather across the northwest has been trying to days, that very big storm there unfortunately is going to be kind of shunted up to the north of us. so we are going to be left with i think fair skies right on into tomorrow and for the next several days. so the temps at the moment, here you go, 82 at lake havasu city, 64 in sedona, the same in globe, and as you look across the valley, our numbers look good too, 74 in surprise, 81 in chandler, 73 in apache junction,

sunrise tomorrow at 6:34. how about the rest of the nation? we have got beautiful conditions for the middle of the country. say you're in maybe a morton, illinois. everything is great there, always, really. it's a pretty nice spot to be. across the northern plains and into trockies, things are a little more unsettled. we have seen some cold weather across the rockies but things are kind of this is the main feature, this big storm that continues to lash at the coast of washington and oregon. and it looks like it is just about done doing so. so things will start to calm down here over the next days. tonight, 70 for lake havasu, 50 for prescott and casa grande. tomorrow 87 in safford, and it looks like low 90s or upper 80s for the rest of the desert parts of the state.

describe why we live here. october through april. >> all right. i'm going to sto stick with tha that's my story. we are looking at now this is the 6th annual hawaii chocolate festival. it took place this weekend. hundreds made their way to the festival where two-dozen exhibiters showed off their chocolate. they should have given it away but they are in hawaii, so life is pretty good. festival's mission is to increase interest in hawaii chocolate industry. it may not be taco tuesday but that didn't stop people from going to the 7th annual taco festival at salt river fields. now, people created teams, and this is the competition. more than 50 teams competed to be in the grand champion title. the national taco association

crowned as grand champion. we spoke with the winner of the competition. there's the winner. victory! what was his winning strategy, you ask? >> i took two tacos at a time. i had a lot of crumbs left, so i stuffed them into my last taco. of course i had open water. i drank it down. >> ah, two tacos at a time. that's the key. an estimated 100,000 tacos were served at the event, which looks like a blast. believe it or not, early voting has begun in arizona and several other states, but do all of these early ballots point to a win for hillary clinton or donald trump? plus no one raising a glass toasting one company, the distillery that is filled with angry workers. yes, i love to end sunday with a good implosion.

fox 10 news is back. arizona just one of several states that has begun early voting and, as fox news reporter bryan llenas tells us, all of this early voting is prompting candidates to increase their campaign efforts. >> more than 750,000 ballots have been cast around the country, 36 states and

voting before election day, and it continues to increase in popularity. more than 45 million people are expected to vote early this year. that's about 40% of all total votes expected to be cast, and so far early voting shows positive signs for hillary clinton. battleground north carolina has been accepting absentee ballots since september 9th. so far, some 31,000 ballots have been mailed in. 38% are from republicans, and 37% are from at this point in the 2012 election, republicans had a 2-1 lead in absentee ballots, a good sign for democrats. in battleground florida, more than 477,000 absentee ballots have been returned. 2.5 million absentee ballots have been requested by floridians. 40% from republicans and 39% from democrats, another positive sign for clinton, because in 2008 republicans led in ballot

but there are encouraging signs for donald trump in battleground ohio. over a million absentee ballots have been requested but there are declines in heavily democratic counties like franklin and cuyahoga. white voter ballot requests up and minority voter ballot requests are down. the majority of states begin early in-person voting after october 17th. in new york, bryan llenas, fox news. on the ballot this november will be minimum wage. ballot proposals from arizona and three other states come just two years after five other states did raise their minimum wage. in south dakota, they are voting on the issue again after raising the minimum wage just two years ago. in arizona, prop 206 would raise the minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2020. meanwhile, hourly workers

to protest. workers say they are being forced to work long hours. the union president says that some full-time employees have to work more than 70 hours a week. workers say that they love working at jim beam. they just want their message to be heard. >> we love our jobs, our company, and we are not doing this to hurt the company. we just want to be heard. >> jim beam released a statement saying that they believe these workers' contract is fair and negotiated in good faith. it's now against federal law to bring a galaxy note 7 on an airplane. this mandate comes after reports of battery fires, explosions, and, of course, a massive recall by samsung. now, the company has gone so far as to discontinue the phone all

reported from ohio. imagine voting on one of these touch screen machines, you press the x and the name goes to the other guy. >> i kept pushing in different areas to try to find out where -- how the heck am i going to get that check mark in my box? >> can a touch screen switch a vote? >> they -- people say that they can. i've never seen it do it, and i work with them all the time. >> patricia colb is the county clerk in orange county new jersey where touch screens have been used for a decade. she knows of no cases where a vote was switched and says poll workers can be alerted if there is a problem. a paper receipt is spat out that confirms the voter's selections before they confirm a vote. >> you're touching the machine. you don't know what's happening. but when you can see that paper,

for the return of each puppy, no questions asked. people in monrovia, california, calling for help aftering spotting this, and this is disturbing to see. this is a deer with an arrow, wow, through its neck. >> i called today from pasadena humane society responding to a deer with an arrow stuck in it in monrovia. it was reported first i bel it's been running around the neighborhood here all week. >> well, as you saw, as that deer leapt over that fence, it appears to be in good shape. it's able to run around. i'm sorry. i have to watch the video. it's just so startling. here's the good news. vets removed the arrow and they are keeping an eye on it to see what happens before deciding whether to release the deer back into the wild. well, when most couples get

europe's rover is scheduled to reach mars wednesday. its main goal is to find out whether life has ever existed on the red planet. well, valley students making a huge difference combining technology and their passion for science and medicine to help their peers. anita roman has that story. >> there are all of these elastic cords and fishing wires, so they are strung across the hand. >> reporter: the design is complex, but the idea is simple. >> my hosts an event where these -- this company, they provided the hands, and intel assembled them, and my dad participated in that event and he told me about it and i thought it was pretty cool, so i wanted to do it at my school. >> reporter: raul jay, a student in chandler started the hand challenge here in arizona this past summer, his goal to create, build, and assemble 30

you're watching fox 10 sports with jude lacava. well, speaking of monday night football, the arizona cardinals will make an appearance on the national stage tomorrow night against the new york jets. cardinals are going to have two new offensive linemen against a very aggressive front seven, of course directed by todd boles. as for the defense, tyran mathieu with every game getting back to being the badger. against the new england patriots, they had him play off the offensive line a little bit. a big test anytime you get a reconstructive acl, and then you see him in the win against the san francisco 49ers last thursday, closer and closer to where he wants to go as the impact guy. they will need play makers. they want to dig out of this 2-3 hole and hope to get back to 500 with a win tomorrow night against the jets.
