this morning shut down loop 101 throughout the night and into the morning commute. a crash troopers say was caused by a suspected drunk driver. this is fox 10 news at 10:00. two drivers died in that crash. witnesses say they tried to stop the driver from getting behind the wheel but they couldn't. they called 911 but troops said they couldn't stop the tragedy in we spoke to experts about how to stop wrong-way drivers. >> reporter: marc, all is quiet on i-10. let me step out of the way to see traffic moving along. it is nights like these where these incidents happen. on i-17 they have been using three to four mile stretch and testing sensors from drivers getting on the freeway in the

couldn't come soon enough. the horrific crash this morning raised a familiar question about stopping the impossible. >> what can you do in that situation? i can't think of anything myself. >> reporter: under the influence and driving a car before heading down the wrong way of the ramp on to the freeway and almost certain disaster awaits. >> the battle against the impaired driver is a real challenging problem. >> reporter: adot says it continues to work on technology that will use the sen roadway to alert authorities about wrong-way drivers. >> it will help with the response in law enforcement. hopefully, officers can get there soon, also, being able to warn other drivers on the freeway as quickly as possible. >> maybe the spikes or something like that might prevent some kind of a device to keep people from going that way. >> reporter: that is a common question that adot gets a lot. research says those don't work.

at an offramp along the freeway. the spikes break off and become a maintenance issue. they can damage other vehicles. >> reporter: thompson says staying alert on the roadway at that hour might make the difference. >> scan the road and make sure, you know, i look for people with headlights off and i look for wrong-way drivers on the freeways. >> if you're out there at those hours in the middle of the night along a freeway, it's t think about using the center to the right lanes because wrong-way drivers tend to use the left lane, as you're driving along the freeway, they think they are on the right-side of the freeway. >> reporter: now research shows that wrong-way drivers and alcohol impairment go hand-in-hand.

shows 5.4% involved alcohol impairment but when you flow in the fact you have a wrong-way driver that ballooned to 65%. no doubt, it has an impact for sure. >> we do have numbers now from the holiday weekend. deputies stopped just under 5,500 drivers during the weekend-long holiday task force and of those, 209 drivers were influence. 3,000 drivers were cited for other offenses and 151 of them were designated drivers. a night of trick-or-treating with his family and friends turned into a scary event for a north phoenix boy. it left him with a bloody cheek when a halloween prank went too far. someone was driving and shooting

5-year-old logan white and hit him on his cheek. he was with his parents. they just started trick-or-treating. someone shot the paintballs into the group. >> reporter: does it hurt? >> yes. >> it is disappointing that is where we are now. i've been egged before. kid dociley things. when you they hurt and you're talking about children 1-10 years old. >> police are looking for a durango-style vehicle with a roof rack to catch the person who did this. luckily, none of the other kids were physically hurt. logan did tell his dad that he is not sure if he wants to go trick-or-treating next year.

fundraising efforts for john mccain pled guilty to drug possession. authorities found a meth lab in her home. her boyfriend was sentenced to four years in prison in this case. mccain's campaign has cut ties with her. if you need to preupbtsdz a- print a duplicate license, you can do that at home wait for their license to come in the mail. it will help to reduce office waiting times. good news from the arizona animal welfare league. three puppies that were stolen from their shelter have been returned and they are in good health. they are the cattle dog mixes taken from the tpa stillty. they will be up for adoption this saturday at the walk to save animals at tempe town lake.

game tonight. at one point, it looked like the cleveland indians had the world series in the bag but the chicago cubs were unstoppable and forcing a game seven. danielle miller spent time with members of the tribe. >> unless you are from ohio or live in ohio, you are probably rooting for the cubs in this world series. it does feel like everybody, everywhere you go is a you go into a store they are selling cubs merchandise. >> reporter: ohio native phil watching his home team in game six with fellow indian fans. they are hoping the indians can pull it off. >> with lebron winning the championship, it took the edge off of cleveland. with baseball, this means a lot if the indians can do it. >> maybe seeing two winners the

city looking pretty good this evening. 67 degrees in scottsdale. 66 in fountain hails. 68 at apache junction. temperatures coming down in surprise at 64. a little bit of moisture finding its way around the state. we saw a flash down by tucson but not much happening down there. as we zoom in to the city, not a lot of moisture around the city. you see a flash of snow up the grand canyon and south of the grand canyon as well but just scattered showers. we turn on the futurecast to give you a look at what is going to be happening. thursday early, the moisture comes in. later in the day, it gets closer to us here and probably in the afternoon around 2:00, more and more moisture. watch it back off and it backs off rapidly and gets another
