by a suspected drunk driver. this is fox 10 news at 10:00. two drivers died in that crash. witnesses say they tried to stop the driver from getting behind the wheel but they couldn't. they called 911 but troops said they couldn't stop the tragedy in time. we spoke to experts about how to stop wrong-way >> reporter: marc, all is quiet on i-10. let me step out of the way to see traffic moving along. it is nights like these where these incidents happen. on i-17 they have been using three to four mile stretch and testing sensors from drivers getting on the freeway in the wrong direction. implementation of the study couldn't come soon enough. the horrific crash this morning raised a familiar question about

>> what can you do in that situation? i can't think of anything myself. >> reporter: under the influence and driving a car before heading down the wrong way of the ramp on to the freeway and almost certain disaster awaits. >> the battle against the impaired driver is a real challenging problem. >> reporter: adot says it continues to work on technology that will use the sensors in the roadway to alert authorities about wrong-way drivers. response in law enforcement. hopefully, officers can get there soon, also, being able to warn other drivers on the freeway as quickly as possible. >> maybe the spikes or something like that might prevent some kind of a device to keep people from going that way. >> reporter: that is a common question that adot gets a lot. research says those don't work. >> they are not meant and they don't hold up when you put them at an offramp along the freeway.

a maintenance issue. they can damage other vehicles. >> reporter: thompson says staying alert on the roadway at that hour might make the difference. >> scan the road and make sure, you know, i look for people with headlights off and i look for wrong-way drivers on the freeways. >> if you're out there at those hours in the middle of the night along a freeway, it's time to think about using the center to the right lanes because wrong-way drivers tend to use th along the freeway, they think they are on the right-side of the freeway. >> reporter: now research shows that wrong-way drivers and alcohol impairment go hand-in-hand. an adot study from 2004-2014 shows 5.4% involved alcohol impairment but when you flow in

no doubt, it has an impact for sure. >> we do have numbers now from the holiday weekend. deputies stopped just under 5,500 drivers during the weekend-long holiday task force and of those, 209 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence. 3,000 drivers were cited for other offenses were designated drivers. a night of trick-or-treating with his family and friends turned into a scary event for a north phoenix boy. it left him with a bloody cheek when a halloween prank went too far. someone was driving and shooting a paint ball gun and it hit 5-year-old logan white and hit him on his cheek.
