recruits. 40 officers took their oaths and were sworn in. nicole garcia spoke to some of the new officers about the challenges they face in policing today. >> reporter: today marks the end of a 20-week journey. loved ones watched with pride as the 40 recruits graduated from the law enforcement academy. >> the biggest challenge is going home safe every day and knowing any situation can turn volatile in a second a remembering that. never let your guard down. >> reporter: before becoming an officer, joshua jacobs was a middle school teacher. along with pride, his wife is concerned. >> in these times, it is worrisome. they taught them here at the academy about befriending the community rather than coming in and scaring the community. to develop that friendship.

department has more than 2,700 officers in total. 121 recruits are going through the academy. firefighters were busy battling a massive fire and this one spread almost a city block here. this is a pallet yard in san bernardino, california. crews responded yesterday morning. more than 80 firefighters battling the flames. the massive fire spread to a nearby strip mall. firefighters put out the hot spots and kept an eye on the smoldering ashes that were left. a city known for lights, gambling, and shows. imagine the surprise when folks at paris in las vegas were plunged in the dark. it made the vegas skyline

one california town are being overrun with angry turkeys prompting locals to calls to 911. take a listen. >> there is a turkey between fourth avenue and fifth avenue chasing people. >> reporter: turkeys have been crowding the main streets of davis, california, causing people to talk about the birds, not about dinner but to 911 dispatchers. >> this is almost embarrassing.
