enough to counter the huge ground swell of latino voters working the streets for months. we are at the watch party where they will be watching the results come in. many students, hundreds of them, many from maryville high school walked out of class and hit the streets. some walked out and some came after school. the sheriff is facing criminal contempt of court profiling charges and many students came out to protest the sheriff. they are tired of the sheriff's policies and they gathered outside of a polling place to support retired phoenix police sergeant paul penzone. >> i hope we get arpaio out. >> his racism and we don't need that here, especially with donald trump running for

>> a lot of arizona voters already made up their mind. about 40% of the early ballots were from registered republican, 34% coming from democrats, and 27% coming from independents. >> we've got a problem brewing in maricopa. it may turn out that 200,000 ballots that came in late may not be counted by tonight. activity at the polls running high as it tip in an election year. >> ty brennan live at the maricopa county recorder's office. >> reporter: they are saying this is record-breaking early ballots mailed out. they have estimated one million of the early ballots that have been returned. 831,000 of the early ballots have been tabulated but it is going to be tough to get to the

the ballots probably won't be counted by tonight. these are the early ballots that are here at the election's office. we did speak to helen purcell about the issues. she said no major issues today. they did have a few glitches today. she did say they had issues with their electronic tablet, their e-poll books. some were not booting properly or not working. they worked most of the day to get the kinks out. this is what they had to say. >> we had issues with the e-poll books. we continue to work on the issue. some of them did not boot up to through our troubleshooters and hotlines we have walk through the people through that and how they get the poll books up. if we had to switch some out,

an extra one with them and they were able to do that and bring the other one in here and with the technicians in here, we were able to bring those up. >> reporter: purcell says there are 7,000 early ballots that have not been counted yet because 2,000 didn't have signatures at all. we've been out here all afternoon seeing a trickle of people come in her ballots signed and confirming voting information to make sure the ballots get counted. we expect that at 8:00 they will have preliminary results. ty brennan, fox 10 news. >> this is a huge story developing. the 200,000 ballots in maricopa, the most populous county in arizona may not be counted tonight. this may throw the results into no man's land.

outcome. this could be a national story. >> we're going to keep an on eye that certainly. some voters had to wait for hours over the past several days in long lines. >> kristy siefkin is live talking to voters in the west valley. the good news is there is a lot of interest in the election, the bad news is no one wants to wait in lines. >> reporter: people getting out to vote but many unhappy with the long lines. we've been comin voting location at 51st and osborn. this line has at least doubled in the past half an hour. the lines are extremely long, longer than whate with looking at -- than what we're looking at now. these people have waited an hour to an hour and a half and those people were waiting a third of the way down the line.

they got inside, there were 14 booths available to vote in but only a couple were being used because there aren't enough volunteers to oversee what is going on so that was a frustration earlier this morning. we got a little bit of a break in the line around 2:00 and looks like that problem could be happening again as people get off of work. they coe after the rush hour commute. this line will continue to grow. we will give you updates throughout the evening and on fox news reporting live in phoenix. kristy siefkin, fox 10 news. >> similar scenes to what we're seeing in arizona all over the nation. battlegrounds states like north carolina. people waiting in long lines. obviously, in a presidential election, voter turnout jumps up. er states have experienced technical difficulties.

>> matt, what have you learned? >> reporter: it is a scary situation that is still ongoing. the shooting happened northeast of the valley at show low at a local arby's. you can see where phoenix is and just to the northeast where show low is. we'll zoom in and try to give you an idea where this is. this is on the main drag. we have pinpoint that is in between arby's between the left and the right, which is a dealership. there is a lot of activity, we know the officer is in critical condition. you are looking at a picture of the suspect. he is 5'11", 36 years old, and should be considered to be around and dangerous. we know the witnesses say he was wearing a long dark trench coat. one man was working at the dealership and he heard the shots. >> we don't know if that is what

day. you can see the current temperatures here. 85 in surprise. 82 in apache junction. 84 at gateway. a little bit on the warm side. there is ahwatukee at 87 degrees. still, just a little cloud cover. not a bad day to get out and get the vote in the that is what you had to do. a lot of people voting early so they probably went out and enjoyed the weather on the day today. we got to 90 degrees at sky harbor. we have 70's up in the mountains. 61 at flagstaff. look at yuma at 94 degrees. the desert warming up. these are the forecast lows for the night. mid 60's in the valley. nice 50's in mesa. 62 at goodyear. we are almost there today within one degree and 32 on the record

bringing the temperatures down. it is going to be the low and mid 80's we're looking at. across the mountains, we'll see 50's, 60's, and 70's. 80's across the deserts almost into the 90's with yuma at 89 degrees. across the ohio valley, they have been seeing rain throughout the day today. those rain totals haven't been heavy but they have been seeing right now, as you can see, these temperatures still looking pretty good all across the country here with 50's, 60's, a few 80's showing up in a few places. overnight and tomorrow morning, not as warm tomorrow at 83 degrees. it is supposed to be 83 degrees that is what you're supposed to see through the weekend. watch your kids around water. >> thank you, dave.

we have about 100 students here at the tollesson high school district gathered for the election watch party. this is all their doing. they organized everything, put up the decorations, got financial help. how did this start in where does this come from? students tell me they were motivated by the reading material in their english 1984 and made it so excited to watch everything unfold and their teachers have been just as inspired. >> it is very important. our kids from an economically diverse community so they need to know about the issues and they need to know how to vote correctly and vote informed. >> it is weird who is going to be president.
