we begin tonight with the we begin with big protests happening across our country. demonstrators taking to the streets to condemn the election of donald trump. more than 10,000 people marched through manhattan and began protesting outside of the trump tower on fifth avenue. >> in chicago, a similar scene. thousands of people marching to the trump tower chanting not so far, the protests have been peaceful and calm. no arrests have been reported. >> thousands of people facing off with police as they march through the streets of philly. many protesters expressing anger at republicans and democrats with the way the election was handled. >> hundreds of people gathered in tempe to protest donald trump's victory in a shocking

university drive before ending on the campus of a.s.u. >> a shooting near an anti-trump rally. five people have been shot, two are in critical condition. the shooting happening near the downtown area feet from where the protests was taking place. it is unclear if the shooting was relateed to the election. about a show low police officer killed in the line of duty. >> officer darrin reed was shot and killed and the shooter was later shot and killed by police where he held a teenage girl hostage. >> an outpouring of support for the officer's family. >> reporter: we learned the

fellow officers telling us the department has never had to deal with a tragedy like this before. they say reed was a fountain of knowledge and will be deeply missed. a town in mourning one day after one of their own lost his life protecting the quiet community of show low. the procession of the body of darrin reed made it through the streets this morning. >> so heartbrein situation. >> pray for his family and wish him the best. >> reporter: reed was shot and killed by daniel erickson. erickson then fled the scene. he barricaded himself in a nearby cabin holding a 15-year-old hostage for nearly six hours. erickson fired shots at officers, they returned fire killing erickson.

and we're close. i mean, we see each other every day. >> reporter: the show low police department's sergeant says reed will be greatly missed. >> he is a guy you can be i'm thinking and looking for this guy and this is what he looks like and he will say that is his whole family was.ell you wh- >> reporter: reed, just 50 years and set to retire in february. >> he said he was going to take time off first. he talked about lots of things. he talked about working at tractor supplier. >> reporter: reed leaves behind a wife and two children. governor doug ducey ordered flags at half staff through thursday to honor officer reed. >> that is tragic.

tempe police are investigating a case of stranger danger. this playing out at the arizona mills mall. last friday night, this man was seen following children into several stores. he approached some of the kids. if you know who this might be, contact tempe police. there has been an arrest in the hit-and-run death in the phoenix children's hospital doctor, a year after the crash that claimed his he was struck and killed while he was riding his motorcycle in june of last year. the suspect ruben santiago lopez fled to mexico but this week turned himself in. he is charged with several felonies. when the crash first happened, we talked to people who knew the doctor well. he said he always made time for

the inmates, volunteers at the funerals as a member of the mcso chain gang, this is the fourth time she attended the burials. as she arranges dirt in a cross on the casket, she reflects on her own life. >> the burials are an emotional thing for me. it is like for me to bury my past and start over. several lonely strangers, the 19-year-old has come to appreciate the time she has ahead of her. >> i detoured from my plan and now i'm here but this is where i needed to be to get my life back on track. it definitely opens your eyes. a lot of people go to jail for a multitude of reasons and most of us in their 20's, you realize

>> reporter: a 59-year-old was found dead in a parking lot in west phoenix. her cause of the death is still under investigation. 93-year-old regina was buried next to her. she died at an adult living center from congestive heart center. she had no family, no friends, or other contacts. >> we are there when they didn't have anybody so i think it means a lot for all of us to do this for them. >> you restore this to life. >> reporter: volunteers from andre's house in phoenix facilitate the services. local funeral homes are contracted by the county to provide the casket. each burial costs taxpayers $350 and approved after a thorough investigation finds there is no

the election may be over - but there is still work to the election may be over the election may be over but there are a lot of work to be done to get the votes counted, believe it or not, especially here in maricopa county. these are the votes we're talking about. the county recorder says 415,000 early ballots have yell yell -- yet to be counted. 55,000 provisional ballots are yet to be counted. we're talking about 500,000 votes that need to be counted. they are trying to county 200,000 ballots dropped off on election day. >> because we received those ballots on the day of the

signature verified, processed, and tabulated so that is what we'll be doing, we'll get them ready to tar you late tomorrow. >> we have to find a way to count these, 500,000? this is ridiculous. donald trump is up and this is affecting other races as well and it is frustrating for the voters for sure. workers hope to tabulate ballots a day but it could take more than a week before we know the final tally before all of the races. >> i don't know if most voters will accept that. that seems like a big number to not have counted. voter registration, voter registration has been interesting. it hit record levels topping 200 million for the first time ever. 128 million cast a ballot, which

turnout that is slightly lower than 2012. in arizona, we hit 70% but this was lower in 2012. here in arizona, 3.5 million voters and two million cast a vote. experts say the number could have been higher if more millennials went to the polls. why did so many vote in this election? we caught up with a few of them to find out why. this is interesting because this was a block that hillary clinton was counting on. >> reporter: yeah, it really is. most of the students i spoke with at a.s.u. said they didn't like either of the candidates. it did not take all of the ballots being counted a the maricopa county record's office to really know that millennials

this race? experts called it last night so i don't know. 52% of voters saying no to the measure that would legalize marijuana for recreational use while 48% said yes. arizona is one of five states with recreational marijuana on the ballot and it looks to be the other state that did not pass the measure. it seems like it will pass in maine but the ballots are being counted and the close to call. >> we can expect another attempt at that initiative in two to four years. we're learning more about a raging fire that destroyed a home last night. the fire started in an alley and s.r.p. says the fire climbed a power pole and set a transformer on fire and this is what we got. the flames spread to trees and sheds nearby.
