now. >> we begin tonight with a fox 10 news alert. a man on his way to jail arrested after a road rage incident in phoenix tonight. it actually started in scottsdale when a woman called 911 saying someone rammed the back of her car while she was driving. >> scottsdale police finally caught up to them near 48th street and thomas in phoenix, and that is when police say that the man who was ramming the woman's car decided to quickly turn around and started driving in the other this was a bad scene out there. he crashed into the suv in the process. his vehicle then spun and crashed right into a scottsdale police cruiser. >> now, everyone is okay. that's the good news. police say the man was very combative as he was being arrested, and they believe he was drunk. another fox 10 news alert, these pictures are live from the a.d.o.t. cameras along the u.s. 60 in tempe where d.p.s. is investigating a rollover crash. firefighters say that the driver

on foot and is still on the loose tonight. but the crash has been closing the on-ramp there, rural road to the u.s., and that is expected to stay closed for a few hours. thanks for joining us tonight. tonight a valley teenager is talking to fox 10 from her hospital bed. she is badly hurt after being hit by a suspected drunk driver. >> and tonight we are also learning more about that man who is still in jail, and that's where we tonight, live with the latest on this. steph. >> yeah, john and kari, a very long road to recovery for these two teens who were hit by a 60-year-old driver who is still behind bars. one of the victims was hit by the driver. from the hospital bed, she tells

she is sharing her story tonight hoping that she can stop someone electric making a very bad decision. in the blink of an eye, her life would change forever. >> he was a drunk driver. he was a drunk driver. >> a drunk driver, the reason why he's here today. >> it's kind of hard, because sometimes i wake up, and i'll remember that my leg is broken. >> two broken legs, five surgeries, weeks after a night became a nightmare. she's sharing her story. >> i really want him to learn that he has ruined my life and my friend's life. >> tuesday, october 24th, mindy and three friends were heading home on 17 when they ran out of gas. mindy and her friend got out and decided to try and push to the nearest exit, but they wouldn't make it even 20 yards before 56-year-old vince vaughn slammed into them. >> i fell to the floor and i

memorized one number for her friend to call. >> so i breathed in, and 602, just like that. >> her grandmother. >> i said, grandma, i'm dying. i'm -- i got into a wreck. some guy had hit me. i'm dying. my legs are completely ruined, there's so much blood. >> she was losing blood in her legs by the seconds. >> she said where are you, where are you? i said grandma, shut just know that i love you. >> mindy admits that she was also losing hope. >> i knew that that was it. i looked at my legs and how bad they were, and i accepted it. i accepted that this was my time to go. >> reporter: courts records show that vaughn was more than two times the legal limit, a convicted felon who has already been in jail for duis twice, this time leaving others suffering, but mindy's compassion allowing her to say this. >> i'm not mad at him. >> reporter: she forgives the

pinetop-lakeside holding a 15-year-old girl hostage. 50-year-old officer reed had been with the department for ten years, was very close to retiring. he leaves behind a wife, a son, and a daughter. we have details on his funeral on our website, fox10phoenix.com. last night a stirring candle light vigil for officer darin reed at show low's landmark statue, this beautiful statue, but that vigil ended with the statue catching fire. the candles that were out to honor well, they ignited the statue, which was made of hardined fiberglass, not bronze. the statue which had been around for nearly a decade was destroyed, and the people living in the town say the statue holds special meaning. >> it was named after the two ranchers who actually played

card, the deuces club, and whoever showed the card won town, and that's the lore of the name of the city, show low. >> a local group is working to raise donations on a gofundme page. we have posted a link on click on seen on tv. two days after the election, donald trump has been declared the winner in arizona. >> officials are still counting ballots in arizona. tonight, the maricopa county recorder's office says there are still 310,000 ballots to count, add to that 55,000 provisional

continue counting in the morning. >> two days after his victory, president elect trump heads to washington, dc to begin his transition in the new role. his plane receiving the water salute at port laguardia airport. once in the capitol, he paid a visit to the white house, where he sat down with president obama, the two trying to put their rocky relationship behind them. >> most of all, i want emphasize to you, ms. -- mr. president elect, that we are now going to do everything that we can to help you succeed, because if you succeed, then the country succeeds. >> we have never met each other. i have great respect. the meeting lasted for almost an hour and a half. mr. president, it was a great honor being with you, and i look forward to being with you many, many more times in the future.

the oval office, first lady michelle obama and future first lady melania trump had a meeting of their own. among the topics they discussed, raising children in the white house. the trump's youngest son, baron, is just ten years old. afterward trump and vice president elect mike pence visited capitol hill for lunch with house speaker paul ryan. >> donald trump had one of the most impressive victories that we have ever seen, and we are going to turn that victory into progress for the american people. >> we are going to lower taxes, as you know. and make it more affordable and better. we are going to do a real good job for the public, and that's what we want to do and why we are excited. >> chris christie, former house speaker newt gingrich, and businessman steve munchen are all being considered for cabinet and other top positions. and now that the election is over, hillary clinton is taking some much needed time off. look at this picture this

upstate new york was stunned when she came across mrs. clinton and her husband bill hiking right with her. margaret posted this remarkable photo on facebook, and she had been heartbroken because of the results of the election. so she went for a hike to kind of clear her own mind and then got the shock of her life when she ran into the clintons walking their dog along the same trail. she says hillary was very nice. she even got bill to take a picture of them together. how about that. >> it out in nature -- >> oh, yeah. >> -- after the insanity of the election, huh? >> a little quiet. across america, maybe not so quiet tonight. protests continue over the outcome of the presidential election. these are live pictures from oakland, california. people have been marching in many big cities throughout the day, and president elect donald trump is actually responding now to the protests. he just tweeted. just had a very open and

election. now professional protesters incited by the media are protesting. very unfair. >> earlier today, there were various protests in the valley, students seen walking out. tonight the superintendent of the school is responding to their actions. danielle miller has the latest. >> reporter: most students walked out of class, some waiting for school to be over before joining the protest. they were chanting things like education, not they say one of their main concerns about president elect donald trump is his stance on illegal immigration. protests over president elect donald trump going on right here in the valley, many students meeting at the capitol. a.s.u. prep student katharine martinez says with trump in office she fears many people she knows who are in the country illegally will now be deported. >> scared that they are going to

them to be scared. i don't want them to leave the education that they have, because i believe that everyone should have the equal education that i have. >> some arguing that these students shouldn't be out here protesting but instead should be at school. >> they are out here when they should have been out here during the campaign. it's over. the decision has been made. >> the superintendent of the high school district taking to youtube to give a statement. he says when a large group of students want to leave the school, they don't lock or the gates, and although they don't condone leaving, they don't stop it. >> we have very strict policies about missing class, leaving campus, and there are consequences for students who have poor attendance or make choices to leave campus or leave class, and we deal with that on an individual basis. >> the superintendent there says about 500 to a thousand students from the district have walked out of class in the past two

police have been present at all of the protests and for the most part they have remained peaceful. reporting live, danielle miller, fox 10 news. thanks, danielle. an arizona murder case gone cold now partially solved after nearly 20 years. avelino tamala found guilty of killing three-year-old crystal reyes back in 1997. the toddlers instance were found in a remote area near goodyear. investigators say the little girl was killed while in the care of her mother and if you have any information on the mother's whereabouts, call the maricopa county office. talking with fox 10 in a previous interview in an unrelated case, court documents show mason filed for bankruptcy in 2009. over the next five years, investigators say he had his father and his fianc?e purchase real estate, a diamond ring and

maison's father and fianc?e are also facing charges in this case. we are exactly two weeks away from thanksgiving, and many areas across the u.s. are still above 80 degrees, and in the areas that get snow, no snow. >> i'm okay with it here, but it gets kind of weird when you start seeing this in the north. >> yeah, it's been around the entire country. it's been backing off a little bit, but there's one area it just won't stop in, and that area is down in the southwest, wouldn't you just know it. there it is in san diego. san diego 90 degrees today. the norm in san diego is 70 degrees. yesterday the high in san diego was 96. that's the record. so they died the record yesterday. -- tied the record yesterday. today at 90 they are one degree below the record of 91 degrees. a look at the rest of the

finish their projects. >> it's a project that wll make history by bringing a little asteroid dust back to earth. >> three, two, one. and liftoff of osiris-rex. >> the osiris-rex was flawless. it was a beautiful launch. >> on september e, the ground breaking mission approached an asteroid and returned at least some of it to earth. inside the building in tuscon scientists who planned the mission wait and wait and wait for its return, seven years from now. heather enos is one of them. >> and the university of arizona has the responsibility of the full oversight of the science objectives and meeting the requirements of the mission. >> it will be a little less than 342 days, 23 hours, 13 minutes until osiris-rex slingshots around the earth. it's called an earth-gravity assist. >> we'll use a little bit of the momentum and the power from the

a slingshot and get us the path and get on to the orbital plane. >> it will rendezvous with benu two years from now. >> the big exciting moment in summer of 2018. >> it is a little taller than the empire state building or eiffel tower, an asteroid chance one in 127 chance of hitting earth in the next century. over the next two years, it will map the asteroid and find its best approach, the target date in 2020. osiris-rex will fly so close to the asteroid that it will be able to vacuum up a two-ounce sample, about the same as four tablespoons of sugar.

your exclusive accuweather forecast with dave munsey on fox 10 news. hi everybody, boy, what a nice day, yeah, nice night too. it's 72 degrees right now, just a light breeze out of the east, southeast, about nine miles an hour, city looking absolutely beautiful tonight, temperatures about the same, huh? 72 right now in scottsdale, 65 up at cave creek, in apache junction 65, in the surprise area, we are looking at 65, and then in chandler, it is 70 degrees right now, some nice looking temperatures. a little bit of high clouds through the

white mountains. that was about it. 82 degrees was our high. you can see other highs, not quite as high, just one degree below that on the west side, a couple of degrees below up in scottsdale. 79 in chandler today. we had 72 degrees in sedona, in payson 64, 59 degrees in show low, and up at the grand canyon 62, 82 in gila bend, and 87 degrees in yuma. this is what we are forecasting for the overnight lows. nice looking te the norm for this time of year is in the mid-50s, so we are a few degrees above it, but still at 60 degrees, real nice looking, lots of 50s surrounding that number, we went to 64 this morning, 82 this afternoon. 78 and five a would be your normal high and low. there's your record high at 91 and your record low at 33. this is what we are forecasting for tomorrow, about the same as we had today, a degree or two

other numbers that we have, 69 in prescott, 58 at flagstaff, 64 at st. john's, 71 in safford, and 87 is the forecast over in yuma. now, as we look across the country, really not much going on, pretty quiet. we see a little bit of weather right in the coastal areas up near seattle, and then down here by brownsville, a little bit of active weather as well, and then look at the great lakes, the upper great lakes, these guys are looking at kind of a mixed bag of rain and snow in that area, but really not bad. look at detroit at 63, 58 up in new york, 70 in atlanta. we also had 70 in wichita today, 60 in bismarck. there's that 90 we pointed out earlier in san diego as things warm up in san diego just a little bit. but those temperatures coming down from what they had been. 60 degrees overnight. it will be mild, 82 degrees for tomorrow, and then we are going

you're watching fox 10 news at 9:00. with john hook and kari lake. tomorrow is veterans day, and tonight we are honoring two valley veterans who fell in to an unexpected friendship. >> this is a story of a 41-year-old and a 93-year-old, and even though they are from different generaon fought for our freedom. >> marcy jones is live with with their story tonight. marcy? >> that's right, guys, i love this story. one fought in world war ii. the other has done two deployments to iraq, and despite the age difference, they do have a lot in common, which makes their friendship even more rare. >> when veteran michael lee went into the shop, he asked the 93-year-old owner what supplements he should take.

he says, the water and keep on walking. >> when the two got it talking, they realized they shared an unbreakable bond of service. a survivor of world war ii, arnie is a veteran and lucky to be alive. after he was shot in iwo jima, he was loaded with hundreds of other buddies and guam. >> after they tied a tag on my toe -- a nurse apparently heard me. >> he says he was lucky to be rescued and nursed back to health, but michael believes he is the lucky one, to have met someone that he admires so much. >> i can't imagine what he went through. i thought that i went through some hard times, and when i hear about what he went through, i stop having pity on myself. >> today michael stopped by to

and walk into the parade route. it is expected to be over by 1:00 p.m. officials will be closing down the road along the parade route at 7:30 tomorrow morning. another hearing in the racial profiling case that goes on. the civil contempt case against arpaio will continue. it's been three years since a federal judge ordered him to stop immigration sweeps and make county sheriff's office. but independent reports from a.s.u. show biased policing still exists, and more than 70 deputies have been identified as potential problems. >> it means that they are, for example, stopping a certain -- stopping latinos or native americans at a significantly higher rate than other deputies in their same beat or their same district, so these things need to be addressed quickly. >> in an interview with fox 10,

office he wants to resolve this case quickly, because remember the monitors that are overseeing sheriff arpaio right now will continue to oversee the sheriff's office even when paul penzone takes over. he says the case and federal monitor are too costly. >> training will be implemented to meet standards and expectations of the court and resolve it so that we are not paying additional fees that could go to safety, education, orother place. to me, that is the most important >> even after paul penzone is sworn in, the maricopa county sheriff's office will remain in compliance, will have to for at least three years before the federal monitor and the entire case will go away. the former ceo of the phoenix-based red light camera company sentenced to two and a half years in prison for a bribely scheme. the judge also ordering karen finley to pay $35,000 in restitution and 10% of her income for the rest of her life. finley worked for red flex

a scheme to secure $124 million in contracts from the city of chicago. she was also sentenced to prison time last month for a similar scheme in ohio. but we were told this is all about safety. that makes me think -- >> yeah. >> -- it's about something else, money. it was a race to rescue a pair of bald eagles from a storm drain in orlando today. >> and the entire ordeal, the rescue and all, was caught on camera. one of the eagles was stuck in a this is like the saddest thing ever to see that, right in the grate there of the drain, while the others stood by watching over it, trying to protect it. when rescuers arrived, one of the eagles flew away, but crews were eventually able to rescue the other eagle by wrapping a blanket around it and pulling it to safety. >> so i reached down there and i grabbed the foot that was grabbing the neck, and then the other one is flailing, and then i grabbed the other foot, and i

trump's victory in the presidential election. they have red, white, and blue donuts that either say trump or wall, referring to the u.s.-mexico border. >> trump has promised to replace the current border fence which is in some areas with a wall and have mexico pay for it. you probably heard that by now. some customers though were not amused by these donuts today while others actually didn't find them offensive at all. >> i am pro see anything wrong with them. i don't know that i would go out of my way to purchase them, but it's a way to support america. >> deportations is a reality, and that's a reality that we face every day, and sure, it's a stupid donut, but what's the point of it? who is laughing at it? >> tonight, dunkin' donuts says they were inappropriately forecasted and when the franchise was made aware of it they were immediately removed.
