and the stadium owners. let's get to the news happening right now. and some big knewss -- big news when it comes to casino gambling in arizona, the governor rescinding a previous deal, that deal allowing the casino and others to offer keno and >> reporter: one thing for sure, nobody likes to see jobs go away, especially this time of year before the holidays. so though they may follow the spirit of the original gaming compact 15 years ago, governor ducey made a deal to keep everyone happy and employed going forward. >> right now, because nobody wants to jobs or money away, those are the options that we were looking at, and the governor saw it and made proposals to the tribes.

an opportunity to end a squabble that has been going on for years. >> we have been doing this since 2009, 2011, you know, and right now we ran out of options, but he came along and helped us to bring it back to the table. >> well, we think this is a good deal for the tribal nations and for arizona. we have to think of, just like i have said, i'm going to be governor of all of the people, and this is a compact that provides opportunity for all. >> by shuffling the deck o compact, the desert diamond casino will get to become a class three facility. that means full slots and table games and eventually a liquor license. meanwhile, the other tribes get to finally say no more to any new casinos in the valley and more money in their pockets. tribal leaders say that's good for all, large and small. >> indian gaming has done a lot for the tonto apache tribe. we are the smallest tribe in the

brought revenue to the tribes in the ways of for health, for jobs, tourism. >> and clearly, you can see the impact of the revenue from the casinos pretty much statewide. now the tohono o'odham nation researches did not want to speak with us on camera tonight, but they did release a statement earlier today, essentially saying that they were not included in any of those discussions until last week. despite that, thgh willing to play ball and consider signing off on the new deal. >> all right, matt. there was a lot of opposition to the legislation related to the casino that was on the table. what's the status on that? >> franks wanted legislation to essentially shut down the glendale casino. governor ducey said they have had discussions about that legislation, nothing today but

prevail and more than likely you will not see legislation to close the casino or anything like that. convicted killer jodie arias's former attorney has tried his last case. he agreed to a four-year suspension after the state bar filed a complaint about his new book, but arias would not agree to the terms, and the bar today took that one saying the attorney revealed confidential privileged information in that book, violating ethical duties as a lawyer. arias is now serving a life sentence. the group's attorney sent letters to maricopa county, adding the dbacks estimated

property is, quote, "greatly exaggerated." at the same time, the team put out a statement adding it's deeply offended that they were uncooperative. the county plans to hold the team to its lease of chase field. that lease ends in 2028. as you get ready to head out for the thanksgiving weekend, a.d.o.t. has taken steps to try and keep drivers safe as they travel along a hazardous section of i-17, between black canyonty -- canyon city and sunset point. >> people eager to get out of the city, even though conditions are cool here, heading up to the high country. and you read a lot of a.d.o.t. signs that say control yourself, control your vehicle, and save lives. that's the message that they really want to drive home with drivers on i-17, because a.d.o.t. says people are

the leading causes of crashes as people leave the valley and head to higher elevations. crashes along i-17 can leave drivers stranded for hours, and according to a.d.o.t. the drivers are often to blame. >> speed is the number one factor when it comes to crashes, the number one violation that is cited by d.p.s. when crashes occur along i-17. it's going to be speed too fast for conditions. >> doug ninsel is a spokesperson for a.d.o.t. he says the the lead in making i-17 a safer route. >> we need folks to slow down, obey the speed limits. we need folks to be patient out there. do not tailgate. be careful with your passing out there, and then also make sure you're avoiding distractions, including using the cell phone or texting while driving. >> every time we have driven on i-17, it's been pretty smooth, you know, no accidents. everybody is kind of cautious of what they are doing. >> the roads are not the greatest, but you are still able

paying attention, i think. >> ninsel says a.d.o.t. will kick off a new safety project in 2017, focusing on the stretch between river road and the sunset point rest area. >> along i-17, we'll be using the signs that display the speed of what you're traveling but then remind you of what the atual speed limit is. we'll also have more electronic message boards out there to again give information about the highway conditions. >> reporter: now, many people ask, is the i-17 going to be widened? we were told today by a.d.o.t., there aren't any plans on the book for that. they are really going to focus their efforts on those improvements to try to keep drivers safer as they head out of the valley. >> kristy, we heard doug mention there a few times about speed. do we know how many crashes are caused by speed or a percentage of them when you're heading out of the valley? >> yeah, marc, a.d.o.t. has

that front, and they found that 40% of the crashes that happen in the black canyon city area are the result of people speeding, and particularly what they call people speeding too fast for conditions. obviously, that could mean drivers will zipping along through rainstorms, through snow, and at that point you shouldn't even be driving the speed limit. you should be driving less than the speed limit in order to keep safe on the roadways. while it's looking like a keep that in mind if you're heading out of the valley on the freeways. police have arrested a man they believe killed a san antonio police officer while the officer was sitting in his squad car, writing out a citation. they arrested 31-year-old tyrone mccain right here. dash cam video provided a lot of information about the death. the driver getting the citation

three officers shot sunday across the country in what are being described as ambush attacks. five children confirmed dead in an elementary school bus crash in chattanooga, tennessee. the driver lost control and wrapped the school bus around a tree as it went sideways, the students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade, 23 students in all going to the hospital facing counts of vehicular homicide. tsunamis of up to three feet were recorded an hour after today's quake, and you can see the surveillance video here in the moments of the quake. so far there are no reports of major damage or injury. most importantly, i want people to know about the heroic thing that my son did.

the family of army sergeant john perry. bomber in afghanistan, and his family made a brief layover at sky harbor last monday on their way to dover air base to retrieve their son's body. they say they were booed by passengers in first class because the pilot wanted everyone to stay seated while the family caught a connecting plane to dover air base. >> and to hear the the flight being delayed because of a gold star family and the first-class cabin booing that was really upsetting, and it made us cry some more. >> sergeant perry was one of four americans killed in the november 12th suicide bomb attack at bagram, afghanistan. he will be laid to rest at arlington national cemetery. coming up, we are going to introduce you to a remarkable

you're watching fox 10 news at 10:00 with marc martinez. a valley man has a lot to be thankful for this thanksgiving. he started choking while he was at a valley jimmy john's, and that's when a total stranger stepped in and saved him. andrew hasbun was the story. >> reporter: he was in a car eating a sandwich in this parking lot outside a jimmy john's when it happened. and now he's trying to track down the man who saved his life. >> one swallow, and bam, i locked up. >> when this happened last wednesday, r.j. cushing knew it had the potential to be bad. >> reporter: panicking, he went inside to find help. a worker called 911, and a man

and started performing the heimlich maneuver. >> he gave me four good pulls, looked at me, stopped, said, hey, can you breathe? i still couldn't, so he did it another four times, and sure enough it came out at that point. >> the good samaritan left before cushing could get his name. since then, he's posted on social media to try to find the man who helped out. >> thanks for being there a otherwise, i wouldn't be here. >> he says he would recognize the man if he saw him and that the man left in a red truck. in chandler, andrew hasbun, fox 10 news. since donald trump won the presidential election, thousands of high school students have taken to the streets across the country, including here in phoenix, to protest the election results. now a university of arizona expert says that kind of engagement early on can actually lead to increased political engagement and activism when those students become adults.

forecast with dave munsey on fox 10 news. nice crisp night out this tonight, dave. >> yeah. >> people finally getting their sweaters out, getting ready for fall. >> and they will need their sweaters tonight. some fog early in the morning that people will have to deal with on their way to work, but look at that, it's 59 degrees right now, marc, so temperatures are coming down. the wind has died down just a little bit, but the city looking pretty good at this point in time. take a look at it right now, 51 at cave creek, 51 in apache junction, in goodyear we have 57 degrees right now, and you can see the low pressure moving on out, a little bit of high pressure trying to kick in here and take over, which indeed it will do.

though, right into tuesday here. we get that moisture moving along very, very rapidly, and you get down in here, you take a look, not much going on, very quiet after a rainy, rainy day, and then look at this stuff up by surprise, 1.7, so, yeah, we have got some pretty good numbers going here. you take a look here by wckenburg, that's 1.3, up by prescott you get 1.3, so we have had some pretty good rainfall, and look at these numbers once again. you get these numbers over inch, almost two inches in a few different places, so some pretty good moisture. now, over in the sunrise ski area, you see a little snow coming down there, five to eight inches is what they were looking at, and then you get up into the sunrise area, and they were looking at about ten inches of fresh snow up in that particular area. yeah, so with that moisture around, and then here the futurecast shows you it is gone and gone in a hurry, and then

about that? and the day not too many days away, 72 degrees, a few clouds out there, going to be some very light winds as well. take a look at it. this is where we went today, 71 degrees for the high. other numbers very close to that, some 68s, some 70s in there. take a look at what we have. the moisture coming up into the midsection about 18 inches of snow in some areas of the northeast, 50 overnight, then take a look at it here. we see some 70s in there and a few 60s, and there's one of those 70s on thanksgiving. watch your kids around water. >> thank you, dave. former cardinals quarterback kurt warner and his wife are helping a valley family, just in time for thanksgiving.

prestigious academic honors in the world, the rhodes scholarship. it's only for the best of the best, and one of this year's winners lives right here in the valley in laveen. steve krafft has the story. >> reporter: this is a story about an incredible honor for a young man from laveen. he's chosen to be a rhodes scholar. st. mary's food bank and others around the state are so very important, every day o one of those who keep it going, 23-year-old oscar, a manager at the food banks in phoenix and an advocate for the food banks at the state capitol. a rhodes scholar, how does that feel? >> interesting. it feels obviously humbling and exciting. >> reporter: oscar came to phoenix to teach and also to help disadvantaged people. he was born in los angeles to parents who arrived as undocumented immigrants from

president ronald reagan's amnesty. oscar graduated from the university of southern california as one of the school's top students. oscar is incredibly happy to receive this honor, but he's also a little bit sad that of 32 americans chosen as rhodes scholars, he's the only latino. >> you know, i'm disappointed that powerful institutions consider to undervalue and underestimate the talents of people of color in this countr his experiece as a rhodes scholar to good use. >> i want to work in public policy to create a more just world, especially for vulnerable people, immigrants, the poor, the hungry, and make sure that they are living up to their fullest god-given potential. >> reporter: what will oscar do after he completes his study as a rhodes scholar? he's not sure, but he wants to be of service to the people who
