reunited with his family just in time for the holidays. news 3 live today starts right now. >> live from las vegas, this is news 3 today. >> happy saturday morning to you. thank you so much for starting your day with us. here is a live look from our camera of the las vegas strip there. today is december 26, the day after christmas, and if you can believe it, las vegas saw the white stuff for christmas. some flurries came down for santa. as for some of our local mountains, lee canyon saw 6 inches overnight. look at that. those are some pictures by some of our viewers of all that dust that came in. the termination dust we called it back in anchorage and of course a real delight for you skiers and snowboarders who may have received extra snow equipment for christmas. this might be a pretty good weekend to go out and use some of your new gifts.

with us on this saturday morning. >> it was pretty windy outside when i came in to work today. really chilly and cold. >> i know. it doesn't feel like las vegas. does it? we've got snowfall we actually reported at the airport, a trace of snow. >> okay. >> we've actually had more snow this year than new york city. is that crazy or what? >> my gosh. >> not to mention we're also dealing with the cold and wind, too. here is a time lapse look. we'll start things out with a time lapse look from mount charleston lodge yesterday. there were a ton of people as you can see right on the bottom coming out to check out all that snow, 6 inches of the white stuff that came down yesterday. now, temperatures and wind, that's what we'll be dealing with today. here is a look at those current conditions. pahrump above freezing, 34. but look at these wind gusts. 26-mile-per-hour gusts reported right now in pahrump. boulder city reporting

top syrian rebel leader was killed in an air strike. the army says the air strike p i suburbs of damascus. the syrian military released aerial video of what it claims was a deadly attack as you see there, which rebel sources say was carried out by russian planes. experts say the disarray among rebel forces could also consolidate syrian president assad's control over the rest of the area. several rebel leaders have been killed since russia began an aerial campaign on september 30 in support of assad. moscow has insisted it is concentrating its attacks on isis. the time now is 6:04. happening today, now that the christmas holiday is behind us expect a lot of people to be out at malls and stores this weekend looking to use those gift cards they got for christmas. in fact, according to a survey by american express today might just be the busiest shopping

like black friday and cyber monday. two-thirds of all respondents plan to shop today. that's compared to 45% on black friday and 47% on cyber monday. shoppers say they will take advantage of some deep discounts and, you know what? maybe even start working on next year's christmas shopping a little early. look at those over achievers there., the other half of that equation is returning unwanted gifts but not all of those returns are made in good faith. the national retail federation estimates 3.5% of the holiday returns this year will be fraudulent. it is expected to cost retailers more than $2 billion. according to a survey by the retail federation, 9 of 10 retailers say they have experienced a return of stolen merchandise. a north las vegas family waking up on christmas morning without a home after what fire investigators believe was a case of arson. fire officials say a house fire

yesterday morning appears to be deliberately set. more than 20 dozen firefighters were called out to fight the blaze. it was so fierce flames shot through the roof and parts of it collapsed as you see there. it took firefighters two hours to get it under control. the house is a complete loss. neighbors who alerted firefighters say their hearts go out to the family. >> you feel for the family. you hope nobody was in the house. you don't know. just thankful that it wasn't any closer but hopefully the neighborhood can reach out and help them. >> damage estimates of the fire are put at $300,000. a woman is under arrest accused of killing a man in a downtown las vegas hotel room. at least one child was in the room when the shooting took place around 11:00 thursday night. police believe the shooting was

that's coming up. >> good morning. welcome back. the time now is 6:12. several investigators in texas are calling a fire that broke out at a houston mosque suspicious. the blaze started just before 3:00 p.m. yesterday. no one was inside at the time but officials say just an hour earlier there were 200 people

people who went to that mosque for prayer say it was a place of peace and learning and should not have been the target of a possible violent act. >> it is just a place where people look for peace, people look for solutions, and people commune with god and it is very sad. the mosque is doing a great job to educate the community not to hurt people. and to educate people to do good and forbid the evil. >> fire investigators say they found multiple points of origin for that fire. no injuries were reported. hey, take a look at this video of the wild fire burning right now in southern california. the brush fire in ventura county quickly spread to more than 900 acres early this morning. more than 100 firefighters are trying to control the blaze. fire investigators say at least 30 homes are in the fire's path. the california highway patrol shut down a stretch of the

mandatory evacuations in area campgrounds have been issued. thankfully, no injuries have yet been reported. heavy rain falling in southeast australia has helped control a huge wildfire there that burned at least 52 homes. officials in australia's victoria state say the danger isn't over. the fire had co 5400 acres by this morning. local emergency officials say the soaking would only provide temporary relief from hot, dry summer conditions that fueled the flames. >> this fire doesn't go away. this fire is a fire that will remain with potential to burn in january and february this year. the forecast for the long, dry, hot summer is there. >> residents of two towns that were evacuated have been allowed to return home. people across the south and midwest are picking up the pieces after this week's deadly prechristmas tornadoes.

mississippi, tennessee, and arkansas. a mississippi bank surveillance camera caught this compelling image of a wedge tornado as it roared through holly springs. at least 14 tornadoes slammed the state, killing seven people. among the dead, a 7-year-old boy who was in a car with his family near holly springs. he is the youngest of the victims. we've been seeing a lot of wild weather across the nation here. wow. very different all throughout the united states. >> yeah. even wild weather here. this is weather we don't typically deal with either. we had snow flurries reported at the airport. 6 inches upon the mountains, even some snow around centennial and providence that stuck. a white christmas for some people in las vegas. how about that, right? now, here is a live look on the resort camera. we have beautiful colors as we wait for the sun to come up this morning. clear skies but clear skies means chilly temperatures. this is what it is right now as you're heading out the door.

summer lynn above freezing. 36 degrees. paradise at 37. temperatures are still going to drop another degree or two before the sun comes up. now, in addition to the cold we're dealing with the wind. these the sustained or constant wind speeds we're dealing with. there's my dog. she's just wand earg round helping me do the weather today. wind speeds downtown 12 miles per hour. summerlin 14-mile-per-hour winds. henderson 3-mile-per-hour winds being reported. now, as far as the gusts go, this is what we're dealing with. look at this. summerlin 34-mile-per-hour wind gusts reported. green s moment. 14 miles per hour. henderson 25-mile-per-hour gusts. when you combine the temperature and the wind, we get the wind chill. when it feels like outside. north las vegas, it feels like 27 degrees. mountain's edge 29 is what it feels like. green valley feeling like 36 degrees. and we're not going to see temperatures warming up much as we head throughout the day today.

pacific ocean near central america. it's jet black and that keeps it camouflaged in deep ocean water and inspired the student's young cousin to add ninja to its name. something else about the ninja land turn shark that is pretty cool, it also glows in the dark. look at that. a police officer in louisiana has quite the story to tell after crashing his patrol car on christmas eve. the good news is he's okay. so what caused the crash? an owl. the large bird flew right into officer lance benjamin's patrol car and made himself right a home as you see there in the passenger seat. apparently the bird wasn't too fond of officer benjamin's driving skills. >> as i was in the subdivision going about 10 miles an hour suddenly i felt something hit the left side of my face. i'm thinking okay. maybe it's a football. then i felt scratching on the back of my head. slapped me a few times with its wings. kept on going with its talons.

wind warnings in place for parts of the viewing area. we'll talk about where those are and how long these winds are going to last coming up. >> all right. thank you. look forward to it. and this morning we now know the name of the burglary suspect shot and killed by a home owner in the west valley earlier this week. the clark county coroner says 31-year-old richard mcgee from huntington beach, california was killed. the woman says she woke up to a man screaming and banging on her front door near sahara and fort apache. she called 911 and told the suspect she and another person inside the home were armed. investigators say the man kept trying to get inside the home. the home owner fired several rounds through the door and hit the suspect once in the head. with new year's less than a week away, just a few days away actually metro is working hard to make sure people on the strip are protected. the number of national
