christine: good morning, and thank you so much for starting your day with us on this sunday, december 27. we are taking a live look at the las vegas valley. overnight, we had a wind advisory in effect with dropping temperatures. i believe it is still going on right now. jerry: there is a hard freeze warning in effect for the area. christine: it was colder this morning, but we might see it light up just a bit. jerry: here is the deal. we have clear skies and the winds have died down. it was miserable yesterday with the north winds. you can see, the skies are clear . 33 degrees, above freezing at our studios. the humidity, 33%. i will tell you, we are one of the warmer spots. look at to wrangle, blue diamond.

also, henderson. 25 degrees with the southwest went at five miles per hour. temperatures around the valley. as you can see, some temperatures dipping into the 20's. las vegas airport, 29. 28 at summerlin. wind speeds have come down. it is chilly all across southern nevada. as i said, hard freeze warnings in effect until 9:00 for outlying areas including pahrump and rim. there is the area of the hard freeze this morning. this afternoon, some chilled sunshine, but less windy. it should be markedly improved over yesterday. let me warn you, tonight will be one of the coldest ones of the year in the mid 20's. get set.

the officer was at home sleeping when a female relative return home unexpectedly. both the off-duty officer and the spouse fired shots. the relative was hit. she was taken to umc trauma with non-life-threatening injuries. 48-year-old david cordova died of multiple gunshot ones to his chest thursday night. his wife is in jail this morning, facing a murder charge. we are told that the child, in the room at the time of the shooting. the couple was arguing at the time of the shooting.

las vegas fire says that ashes spread to the house. a man tried to put out the fire with a garden hose, but suffered smoke and elation. he was treated at the scene. strong winds moved ashes from the pit. damage estimates put at $10,000. las vegas is getting ready for another presidential visit. tomorrow, democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders will be a canyon springs high school. doors will open at 5:00. sanders, who is about 20 points behind hillary clinton, will make a stop today in reno before heading to the valley. the time now is 6:08. let's take a look back, shall be? it is almost time to say hello to 2016. first, let's take a look back at the most vital moments of 2015.

in a moment. temperatures around the valley -- some upper 20's in summerlin, las vegas, blue diamond. 21. the good news for us, the nasty winds yesterday have subsided. i wind gusts have come down. here is the hard freeze warning for mohave county, also parts of clark county including pahrump. that will expire at 9:00 this morning. look for another round of hard freeze warnings into tomorrow. there will be some chilly temperatures in the valley as well. current temperature, 3 the airport. eight in tonopah.

look at this line of frontal system to the east. fairy warm temperatures -- very warm temperatures. the worst weather in the country, if you are driving or traveling, would have to be over the lower southern plains and the southwest loan star state. look at dallas. treacherous driving over oklahoma. the same storm that moved here interacted with the system over us. the high is still around. that will give us a pretty nice day. it will be chilly, but sunny. we will get rid of the winds. it could kick of the wins by tuesday. it will set up an onshore flow. hopefully it could help some of the forest fires -- brushfires in ventura county.

it burned through over 1200 acres. officials say that high winds fueled the blaze, causing it to spread quickly in several directions. >> this is a large event. in ventura county, this is the largest brush fire we have had in a couple of years. we were fortunate with this one. we got very aggressive with the. even though this was a very, very dangerous fired -- a lot of extreme fire behavior out there -- we were able to hold it to the acres we are looking at right now. christ 400 firefighters responded. to have suffered minor injuries, but no other injuries have been reported. thankfully, no structures have been damaged. tensions rise and chicago after police officer shot two people to death, including a 55-year-old woman was accidentally struck.

i am a garage saler. i love it. what i do is in garage sales, for a couple of bucks, i will pick up old sleeping bags, they are insulated, great. you can cover your annual bed, petunias, whatever. you can buy burlap and wrap it around the trunks of your citrus and others as well. do several layers. you can take your tomato cages that you are not using, but the around the plant, and cover it all the way to the ground. burlap and frost cloth is good for those mustard greens, turnip greens, what not the you have in the garden.

this year i found, at one of the hardware stores in town, these are heating cables. they're great for your pipes. one of the most important things is cover your plants. christine: to talk about the common plants that don't need to be covered -- >> anything more tropical like citrus you need to cover. i have seen people cover their rosebushes. they grow up into iowa, utah. junipers -- i was at a hardware store, and they were covering their junipers. in a such a waste to cover them and uncover them. know your plants. you can look at a garden book, online. christine: it is worn out, you have used it quite a bit.

christine: a 12-year-old boy makes it his mission to raise awareness on a disease that his mom's fighting. he has been doing so for the past five yehe is this weekend hero. at the heart of the artistic. when you find michelle here, you will likely find her son. the two have a bond that is rare with 12 years old. it is no wonder that jay decided to start a nonprofit to bring awareness to his mom's disease. >> i found a dog tag, it was like a lightbulb in my head, i wanted to start a foundation. christine: philip was diagnosed with cdpip. >> it is a rare disease.
