let's stock with ron mott. he's in the thick of it in massachusetts. what's it like there. >> reporter: good morning to you. just light snowfall at the moment. it's coming down and it's going to be coming down all day. this morning the northeast and new england getting hit with snow and sleet while millions of americans elsewhere are digging out and drying out from the deadly mess left behind over the past several days. in iowa, whiteout conditions, wind and ice making for treacherous travel. in missouri, major flooding and record breaking rainfall, claiming at least ten lives, the going tough to saturday least. >> it has been a very difficult several days and this threat is is clearly not over. >> next door a school bus was swept away in floodwaters in illinois. emergency responds are rescued all the teen-agers aboard.
7:03 am
after freezing rain, ice and sleet left close to 200,000 without power. >> at least we didn't get hit with the tornadoes like in the dallas area. you have to count your blessing. >> and a devastating look at nine tornadoes that killed at least 11 people. this woman is picking up the pieces after riding out saturday's tornadoes in her bathroom. >> it's heart breaking. you've been here so long. so to lose practically everything is just -- this is the stuff you see on tv. you don't think it's going to happen to you. >> elsewhere around the state, record snow. lubbock saw blizzard conditions. the mayor declaring a state of emergency set to last all week and some areas of new mexico buried under two feet of snow. >> now for folks in and around boston, the hope is this is not the start of what we saw last season.
7:04 am
perspective, the average snowfall in boston is just 43 1/2 inches. that was a lot of snow. >> hopefully it's not a start of that kind of season again, ron. thank you very much. >> and al is here with good news. >> can we keep ron mott up for just a second. up can hear that bouncing, right? you're getting some sleet right now, right? >> reporter: yeah. it's a little wet mix. we're expecting it maybe to turn over later in the morning. so the morning commute's going to be a little slick here. and they're just getting the streets cleared off for the folks heading into downtown today. >> we're going to get some radar verification. look at the temperatures right now, boston 34. that's the icy mix. it's now pushing up. the snow is moving to the north. in blue line is the freezing line. new york city's at 40 but albany at 29 so we're looking at snow there. right now 37 million people are
7:05 am
scranton, albany, hartford, burlington and portland all being affected by this. for today that wintry mix will start to push to the north, staying snow up into central and northern new england. dangerous travel, low visibility. look at the snowfall totals, upwards of a foot or more. but here's what we're really concerned about. from utica, new york, all the way into central maine, we're looking into upwards of 1/10 of an inch, that's where you lose traction. we're going to be looking at big problems as far as the roads are concerned right into this evening for parts of new england. it's going to be a real mess. when we come back, we're talking about major river flooding on the mississippi, which sun heard of this time of year. you. >> mention the roads. there's also the sky. we have for the second straight morning flight cancellations and
7:06 am
they are mounting this morning. christian dahlgren, give us some good news. >> we'll be sure to say hi to your mom out here. she has a lot of company, hundreds of people now waiting for flights to go. this is not how you want to start the morning. already we have 759 cancellations nationwide, 891 delays so far. so really a tough, tough morning. we're seeing delays building in places like where ron is in boston, throughout the new york area and the northeast where we're seeing the weather. still a lot of cancellations and delays in cases like chicago and dallas that saw that awful weather yesterday and through the weekend. it really is a domino effect throughout the entire system and the weather put a wrench in all of it. as of last night there were more than 5,100 delays, almost 3,000 cancellations nationwide. it is going to be a tough day out here for a lot of people,
7:07 am
>> kristen, thank you very much. >> meanwhile, a teen-ager who use an affluenza defense is back in custody. >> good morning. the so-called affluenza teen and he is mother had been on the run for several weeks. the district attorney confirming overnight that the pair is in mexican custody. this morning the search for affluenza teen ethan couch and his mother, tanya, is over. mexican officials say the pair was picked up by immigration authorities around 6 p.m. monday. couch's hair apparently died black. two weeks ago the fbi and u.s. marshals service, offering a

would now finally be locked up. >> the local sheriff had previously said that couch face ud up to ten years in prison for violating his probation. he could now be in even bigger trouble and his mother could also face charges. right now it remains unclear when they will return. >> we'll go to donald trump live in a moment. first let's go to hally jackson live in new hampshire. >> good morning, savannah. trump is announcing he'll start spending big in january, taking no chances, he says, ahead of the iowa caucuses.

7:11 am
different publication that has trump fired up after a new hampshire paper ripped him as a crude blow hard, comparing him to the bully bif, from "back to the future." >> the paper quickly called out by trump. and the publisher. i'll take you on one own one in a debate, any time, anyplace. i'll do it. >> it's reminding people to vote but fumbling when. >> it so important on february 8th, 9th -- what you should do on february 8th, stand there. and on february 9th, you get in and vote. >> donald trump loves talking about his poll numbers but
7:12 am
mentioned yesterday, a new one from gullallup, showing him as second most admired person in the world, tied with the pope. >> let me start with this latest tweet that you have. talking about bill clinton, you said he had failed badly in the 2008 campaign when he acted as a surrogate for his wife and you added he was called a racist. ism know you choose your word carefully. are you yourself calling him a racist? >> no, he was called that by the obama campaign. he was called it loud and clear. >> why did you put it in your tweet when you don't believe it? >> they said it. i didn't say it. >> but you circulated it to 5 the 4 million followers. that would suggest you approved
7:13 am
>> that's all they said. i don't believe he was a he did very, very poorly, he was not good for her and obviously she lost to obama but they brought him out before. >> what are you referring to in particular? >> if you look at the different situations, of course we can name many of them. you can get you a list and have it sent to your office in two seconds. there was certainly a lot of abuse of women, you look at whether it monica lewinsky or paula jones, many of them. certainly if they play the woman's card with respect to me, that will be fair game. >> you mentioned monica lewinsky. are you saying an alleged extra marital affair that he has now admitted. >> it's not alleged. >> no, he's admitted it.
7:14 am
have to use the word alleged. >> exactly. so are you saying an extra marital affair by bill clinton is fair game, something that you think should be in the campaign? >> what i'm saying is very simple. if she is going to play the woman card because i'll do more for women than hillary clinton is going to do for women, including the safety of our country, which is good for everybody. but if she's going to play -- talking about a week ago, oh, he mentioned -- playing up the woman's card very, very strongly. if he's. >> mike: i like the fact that hoose campaigning for her. he failed in 2008. he frankly did at that very poor
7:15 am
but if she's going to in 2008 you called the efforto imesh do you still feel that way or have you had a change of heart? >> i tell this to everybody. i'm dubbed as a world class businessman, which frankly that's what i am. and i got along with everybody. i got along with the clintons, i got along with the republicans, the liberals be as a businessman, i have to get along with everybody and i'll be able to do that. but i got along with the clintons and everybody virt. >> did you secretly not feel that way about them? >> no, let me tell you. when i was a businessman, i had

7:33 am
>> that sounds like a documentary that's an indictment against ashley manning. >> no. >> it doesn't seem to put any case against peyton manning if that's all it is. >> this is an hour long documentary about doping in sport. within that documentary there is a very short section at the end. it's a section that everyone has picked up on, but what that section follows a very long journey charting our investigation into banned substances, one of which is growth hormone. >> two quick things. let's assume that hgh was sent to mrs. manning. aside from the recanted statement of charlie, do you have specific evidence that peyton manning himself has ever taken hgh? >> we have not said that in the program. >> you're not even alleging peyton manning took these substances? >> the only allegation in the program from charlie sly is that growth hormone was sent repeatedly from the guyer to ashley manning in florida. >> so it sounds like your documentary doesn't have any evidence against peyton manning. >> we're not making the allegation against peyton

my li'l buddy? and what if this happened again? i was given warfarin in the hospital but i wondered if this was the right treatment for me. then my doctor told me about eliquis. eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. not only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots, but eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. knowing eliquis had both... turned around my thinking. don't stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. don't take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. if you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. while taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily... and it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures.

nbc. and we are back at 8:45 this morning on "today." hassle free holiday, turning new year's eve into a child's playground. if you have kids why not avoid the cost of a baby-sitter and host a party fun for all ages. here to show us how is kimberly shlayingal whitman. she is the author of the new book "monograms for home." hello, kids, good to have you here as well. this is a great idea, kimberly, because you have new year's eve broken down into the hours. >> yes. >> within each hour is a craft and some sort of a food. >> that's right. so we want to keep it moving, keep the kids, you know a little bit out of trouble and entertained. just like the grown-ups.
8:32 am
involved every hour. giving them something precious. like the acts in a play. >> very smart to compartmentalize it for kids. let's walk people at home through it. it's 8:00 p.m. what have we got? >> so we have some play-doh for the kids. they can add glitter to it to give it some sparkle for new year's. you have to add tons of glitter. so it's going to get a little bit -- >> messy. >> glittery everywhere. messy and glittery are two different things. you can make homemade play-doh. that's right. you're doing a great job. keep kneading it in there. it will be so beautiful by the time she's done kneading it together. at the same time, give them something savory to snack on. >> why not start with popcorn bars? >> yeah. we have used leftover wrapping paper to make the cones. then you can add whatever toppings. >> what's your name? >> elizabeth.
8:33 am
popcorn? >> m&m's. >> for the grown-ups, we have dill and rock salt. salt and pepper. things like that. some skittles in there too. raisins, apricots. we have pretzels. anyway, that's a fun way -- >> that's cool. >> you can make the serving cones out of wrapping paper. >> okay. 8:00. we move closer to the midnight hour, but not there yet. what's the objective in the 9:00 p.m. hour? >> we'll prepare them for the big celebration. so now they're going to be decorating party hats. so we have basic party hats. >> that's fun. >> instead of using glue and mess, i have sticker -- >> some bling here. you can put on them. >> look at -- >> you're doing a great job. >> fantastic. so ts is a fun way to show their personality. they can make it crazy and wild. a beautiful design.
8:34 am
i have glitter peps. lots of things. if you put them out in a cute way it feels more festive. i like you've getting in on the action. >> this is great. i have three kids at home. we grew up with our parents bailing on us. like maybe make a pizza, watch mtv, that's it. but to have this much thought in it it's awesome. not expensive or crazy. >> and putting thought into things makes the night move more smoothly. so here with the cookies, it's 9:00 now, he's added all the numbers. he's helping me make the cookies. >> what's your name, young man? >> argin. >> nice to have you here. did you prems?th >> we did. but you can get the kids to make their own cookies. >> introduce some sugar. trying to hold tt. ou you want to keep them up. but not go too wild. >> what's at 10:00? >> we want to calm them down. find them a seat.
8:35 am
>> it does look like homework but it's more fun.n. get them thinking about the memories from 2015. the bes also making some resolutions and goals for 2016. >> what did you write for 2015? skate board. you learned skateboard at camp, right? very cool. going to harry potter. >> she wants to be better at math. now, the trick is to guide them a little bit by asking them questions. giving them a blank piece of paper and saying, write down your resolutions is hard for children. >> simple answers. you're making pizzas? >> but the trick is we have black eyed peas in with the pesto for good luck. you're supposed to do it on the 1st. >> now it's 11:00. >> we're getting there. so we'll make them busy making stir sticks so when they make their mocktail which is theirs when they set it down.
8:36 am
over and using scissors and they can -- she's stirring the berries here. let them get involved what's inside of the drink. have fun with it. >> natural sugar at the end to hold them out. is everybody going to stay up until midnight and new year's eve? going to try. with the help of the cookies, a meal, arts and craft. >> you can do the countdown if you feel like they're fading. countdown to 11:00. to 10:00. whatever time you need to do it. >> this is a good idea. for more on these and other kid friendly ideas, go to today.com/parents. coming up, a delicious twist
8:37 am
"today" on nbc. moving a tv is a real pain. would that be easier if i had prism tv from centurylink? sure. i've got centurylink's wireless set-top box, which makes it pretty easy. let me show you. i could move it here... or here... even here. switch to centurylink. get the prism essential tv package with internet for only $70 a month for one year with autopay enrollment. didn't even break a sweat.
8:38 am
we're ba we're back. 8:52. hello. we areck look at you right behind me. >> i can't wait. >> i can't eick ier we have a chef with some great comfort food recipes to try. good morning. >> good morning. >> i want to say the mystery theater bunch is downstairs tasting -- >> yes. >> there they are. >> hi, guys. >> we'll check in with you in a moment. >> this is cheesalicious.
8:39 am
>> so mac and cheese, we have some pasta, milk, mustard powder, two kinds of cheese and we have fun toppings too. bacon and onion. >> what's this? >> butter nut squash. >> interesting. put that in your mac and cheese. carson knows what he's doing. >> no, i don't. i need the help. >> so we'll start off by making the pasta. we're just using some elbow noodles. you can use any kind of small pasta. penne or whatever. get some salt in there. really important to make that nice and salty. you know, follow the instructions on the box. this is the easy part. all pretty easy. then we start our cheese sauce. a basic white sauce is our base. i have some butter in here already. i'm going to add some flour. so -- >> regular flour. >> why the flour? >> what this is going to do it's going to thicken the sauce, it makes a roux.
8:40 am
creamy, cheesy -- >> yeah, you can't just throw cheese on top. it's milk thickened with flour and butter. >> this is not a diet recipe. >> no. no. that's for next week. >> the last hurrah. >> it is. >> so you get that going. that'll start to thicken up. like a pudding texture almost. then with spice it up with -- i have the cayenne, dry mustard powder that adds take. you can use regular yellow mustard, smoked spanish paprika. >> i th is the fancy pot right here. this is the roux with the spices. >> exactly. this is your base. so then once this all thickens up we get our cheese in here. we have two kinds of cheese. i'm using the cheddar because it's a classic. it gives it that creamy meltiness meltiness. >> and the kids like it. >> yeah. and the parmesan.
8:41 am
>> yeah. >> if you don't have kids you can get the fancy cheeses. >> i like to use the leftovers from the cheese -- >> fancy cheese. >> >>. >> so we have that nice and thick. once it's incorporated -- it's not yet, but we'll pretend. we get the pasta in there too. >> add the pass to the sauce? >> yeah. >> should we do a check-in with the gang downstairs. dylan never had homemade mac and cheese. >> i have been eating the mac and cheese with the side of bread. >> are the toppings for the mac and cheese? >> good segue. we are getting to that, al. the toppings. >> look at the toppings. so here's the finish. beautiful creamy mac and cheese. it's stove pot so you serve it right away. people can eat out of their own bowl. diy. >> we have to get to the monkey bread. >> we're not going to run out of time. >> maybe we are. >> running out of time?
8:42 am
herbs. >> don't listen to him. keep going. >> you know you're on the air, carson? >> eggs, lots of herbs. we're mixing up the base for the monkey bread. whip up the egg. >> don't freak out, but we have ten seconds. >> that mac and cheese is unbelievable. thank you so much. kim: hi, there. dana: almost a year ago. it is someone going into an suv and biting a one-year-old child.
8:43 am
dana: it is tough to make out. somebody said, "there is an infant in that car." she was inside and bitten by that police dog. the officer did not know when he let the dog loose. the problem is they thought the father was involved in some sort of a robbery attempt. he was not. henderson paid $13,000 for the child's medical bills. if not for the journal, we would not see the video right now. kim: what a story. right now we're talking about the weather. kelly: it is still going to be chilly. temperatures are on the rise. we're above freezing. in many locations 42 degrees in henderson.
8:44 am
plenty of sunshine and light wind this afternoon. toward the new year's holiday, new year's eve, 50 degrees. 30 by new year's morning. kim: talking about new year's eve.

8:46 am
>> new year's around the corner and ray charles is timeless. >> "mess around." >>the big bold and savory was from yesterday's cooking segment. we were makeing a casserole, birks bold and savory and sounds like john cena, big, bold and savory. >> from now on you have a new nickname. >> thank you, appreciate it. >> could be called a lot worse. >> i know i have been. >> hey, okay. i love this story. last week this scout leader attacked by a b,ack bear while he and his three scouts were hiking in new jersey. well, scout leader entered a cave where the bear was likely hibernating and the scouts called 911, and these kids are so impressive. >> unbelievable. >> take a listen to this. >> 911. where's the emergency? >> my scout master went into a cave and a bear is in the cave with him.
8:47 am
because of where the bear, is or is he too injured to get out? >> i think the bear is on top of him. my scout master just suggested that we get food to put the bear out. do you want us to make a signal fire? >> if you guys can start a fire. >> 911, where's the emergency? >> splitrock reservoir, blue trail. i was mauled by a bear. >> where are you bleeding, your leg, arm? >> left arm, left leg, neck and head. >> guys, on three, everyone's gonna yell hello, can you hear us. >> can you hear us? i see the helicopter. i see the helicopter. >> all right. he sees the helicopter. >> we'll make it out of this alive. you love you guys. >> wow. >> that's so unbelievable. >> they deserve a badge of honor. >> totally. >> for being able to be so cool, calm and collected and calling 911. >> and i think that right there is what saved his life because there waso panic. they just knew what needed to be done and execute it had. >> true scouts through and through. >> scouts through and through, like academies like west point, they often look for qualities
8:48 am
that ability to stay calm and collected. >> were you ever a scout? >> didn't make it all the way to eg. it was extremely difficult. i kind of fell off with the knot-tying stuff. quite early. >> can you make a fire with a stick? >> i can make a fire. it involves gasoline. >> i think most us can do that with gasoline. >> yeah. >> a match. >> if you will. >> taking two stones together doesn't work. >> if you had gasoline. >> absolutely. >> speaking of under fire, pouring gasoline on the fire this, morning we had the reporter on from al jazeera who reported on this story, as you know. there's been these reports that have linked pain to using performance enhancing drugs, specifically human growth hormone and it was reported on
8:49 am
that apparently reportedly goes back to 2011 when an unpaid intern charlie sly made claims that shipments were made to peyton's wife ashley manning. peyton manning has vehemently denied all of these. >> nothing has been said to her or have i ever taken, absolutely not. she may have her personal business. >> manning says that he's never taken any of these substances. he was treated at the guyer institute. he had a lot of surgery and recovery time so he stays the story is completely fabricated. interesting though that the interview with carson this morning, the al jazeera reporter now says the documentary is never really pointing the finger at peyton, instead saying specifically the only person named was ashley manning, though
8:50 am
athletes using performance enhancing drugs. so i think it can be inferred by that reporting that that's what people are going to make the connection. >> but if you listen to the interview, it sounds like she's walking it back. >> backtracking a little bit. >> take a listen. >> two quick things. let's assume that it was sent to mrs. manning. aside from the recanted statement of charlie do you have specific evidence that peyton manning himself has ever taken hgh? >> we've not said that in the program. >> you're not even alleging peyton manning took the substances? >> the only allegation in the program from charlie lie is that growth hormone was sent repeatedly from the guyer to ashley manning in florida. >> so it sounds like your documentary doesn't have any evidence against peyton manning. >> we're not making the allegation against peyton manning. >> well, meantime, the intern charlie sly has also recanted and according to one report sly claims that he was badgered into talking, these videos that were made of him talking and was in
8:51 am
time of the video recordings. i was asking you before we came is on performance enhancing drugs. >> yeah, we have a p.e.d. policy instituted in 2005 and '06, randomly tested all year. all upstars undergo the tests. we love our sports and want to keep our sports pier and whenever we here someone is trying to gain advantage which is why they are performance enhancing drugs it becomes a wildfire and in this documentary you basically have a giant door of speculation that has been opened. >> right. >> you have nothing proof positive. they say this was sent here. that's what we know. you can link all the dots if you want and you can come to all these speculation conclusions if you want. >> right. >> but it is just that. >> but it's very damaging though. >> absolutely, sure. >> when you make those kinds of allegations. >> here's the thing about that, once those allegations are made you can't take them back and the
8:52 am
their days either answering questions about something like that or trying to prove their innocence in many cases. >> a lot of times it puts that doubt in people's minds, whether it's proven or not, and it seems unfair. >> and you heard him get most choked up -- when peyton was asked the question, what about kids who look up to you? it's unfair for his name to get associated with this if it is just an allegation and now kids are questioning and putting together his name with hgh, and it's just not fair for a role model. >> the peyton manning question is a little bit more spectacular because it's now a wide-range media story but all the time i'll walk into a room. the first thing everyone says is, wow, he's big, he must be doing this. >> right. >> there's -- it's just a very, very difficult thing because as you said we have a lot of families and kids and you want to be that role model and i worked hard. started lifting weights when i was 12 years old. haven't stopped since, 38 and 39 in april. one of the things that the best can you do is, know you're going
8:53 am
every drug test, pass every drug test and do the best you can do to spread the good word of those people who follow you and peyton manning's performance certainly speaks for itself. his candor on and off the field certainly speaks for itself and see where this thing goes. right now i don't think it's anything more than speculation. >> great perspective. okay. >> speaking of that, let's go to a selfie perspective. >> okay there you go. buzzfeed. >> okay. >> that took a turn. >> thank you, guys, like i said, the check has been cashed, posted the 20 most important selfies of 2015 and we'll take a look at a few of them. trio of kim, kanye and hillary clinton. attended a fund-raiser for hillary in l.a. >> we're supposed to guess. >> that made it a little easier. >> because i -- i did so bad on the pop culture stuff yesterday i had to gain my points back right now. i saw through all that and read the answer off the prompter. >> that's all right.
8:54 am
there was a selfie post of sorority girls at a diamondbacks game, seemed to be paying much more attention to themselves. >> no idea what's going on the field. >> love the face she's making. >> that's okay. >> selfies in proses. >> never ate the chili dog. it was just for the picture. >> we have a selfie of two canadian guys who rescued a bald eagle and for their reward they were granted the ultimate selfie. not too many selfies with a bald eagle. >> that's a selfie you take in two seconds and let go. >> selfie you may want to take in two seconds and get out of dodge. my wife is giving birth right now selfie. yes. >> i don't know how i feel about that. >> his wife was in labor with their daughter eva. >> if i was the wife, i think that's a little perturbed. >> the guy is smiling and the lady not so much.
8:55 am
>> we've got a space station selfie. >> the great thing is you can say that's anybody. >> didn't you do something like that once. >> i did do the photos when you did the charlie chaplin. >> great selfie and great view as well. >> al, you gave us a selfie as well. >> that's right. my family, my son nick went to slope away camp for the first time this summer. >> that's a great family photo. >> a great moment. >> king of selfie. >> and so nice to see you chose the one with your family. >> al is always very good. learned to take more self which is my family. >> otherwise you're in the pictures. >> i'm always the one. >> my favorite, of course, earlier this year, i had the opportunity to climb up on top of the st. louis arch. >> wow, that's crazy. >> you don't see quite the perspective but that down there, yeah, that's the mississippi river. >> if you kept sliding would you slide right back down to the ground.
8:56 am
on, i could have gone over the edge, yes. >> myselfy was actually savannah took the selfie. we were so excited that adele was here, she's in the background, you can see her all the way back there, too nervous to go up to her and say hi. >> i didn't even see her. >> right in front of the mississippi river. >> as far away as you can get. >> there, isn't a selfie of me but a selfie nicole took. his name is winston, he's 8 weeks old, so cute and i love the lady in the picture and i hopefully will get to know what soon is to be man's best friend. >> so cute. >> so cute. >> and little airport will ensue. >> yeah. >> everywhere and doing stuff and it will be instant. >> it's instant bonding, i'm telling you. >> just like yesterday, today is my chance to get to just smack-down.
