leonardo dicaprio plays hugh glass, an explorer across the wilderness and his quest for revenge against a fellow explorer. he endures sub zero temperatures, unforgiving elements. in one of the film's most talked about scenes, a vicious bear attack. it was shot on location far from the comforts of a hollywood studio. what you see on screen is raw and, oftentimes, real. >> was there ever a moment when you thought, why did i do this? why did i sign up for this? >> literally, everyone felt that a few times a week, yes. i'm not going to lie, it was one of the -- it was probably the hardest, you know, films, professional things, i've ever done, for sure. >> one of the things you do in the film is actually eat a real bison liver. i wanted to believe that that was a prop, but it was real. why did you push yourself to do that?

think, boy, what a lazy performance. you take that extra step. why? >> the native american actor that i was working with, hisarthur, and he was eating raw bison flesh during rehearsal. they gave me this pancake thing authentic to me. i wanted the real thing. it was this giant liver that was incredibly disgusting. my reaction is very much up on screen, which is a nauseating one. >> fair to say, you've had your last bison liver? >> i'll never do that again. never do that again. >> there's another scene where you crawl inside the carcass of a horse. i just kept thinking about the theme of will to live. watching this film, there were ten times i would have just said, forget it. i'll lay down and give up. how did you tap into that in your character, that absolute relentless will to live?

the first time, i said, my god, the perseverance of the human species, our adaptability, the ability of life to keep pushing forward in all adversity is amazing. it's kind of displayed in this movie in a way i haven't seen in a while. because we were trying our closest to emulate these people's journeys. >> did you actually crawl inside the horse carcass, or please tell me there was a set piece. >> yeah, there was a set pete. >> thank you. i don't think i could take it. >> reporter: something that wasn't a set piece, dicaprio's beard. >> how long did it take to grow? >> four months or five months. but then i kept it for like a year and a half. i lived with that thing for a long time. >> seems to take on a life of its own. >> it became like a partner, like a life partner. >> reporter: now, all eyes are on dicaprio's chances during

>> i think you lose buddy status once you leave your said buddy for dead. >> had you heard of the hugh glass story? >> no. >> this is based on a true story. >> i didn't know of hugh glass, no. apparently, he was a hearty fellow. >> so much has been made of the experience. seven to nine months of the director's technique of using only natural lights. you had an hour and a half to two hours a day to shoot this. don't want to overstate the hardships that actors go through, compared to people who actually go through hardships. >> let's pretend we haven't worked with anyone else. >> as a movie shoot, how tough was it? >> very, very difficult. it was a long time and the cumulative effect of, you're taking a beating every day physically, and it adds up over time. we were at minus 30, minus 40, dragging leo over mountains and everything.

it's nothing compared to -- at least we slept in a hotel. the actual people slept out there. >> was there a point where you thought, what have i gotten myself into? >> truthfully, there was no fully preparing yourself for what the challenge of this movie was. i think a few of us experienced a form of cold, but it was redefined. to be fully immersed in the elements was a blessing, but it was tough. it pushed us to our limits. it was necessary to capture what we captured. >> what did you learn about yourself? leo talked about the journey for him being the toughest of his professional career. what did you learn about yourself, if anything? i learned that. the biggest take away was once we felt like we did "revenant," it melt the other challenges in the future are going to be, potentially, a little more manageable.
