we're helping you hit the reset button on food, fitness, fashion and finances in 2016. on today's agenda, earning more. according to career builder.com, 56% of people never asked for a raise. 49% of new employees accept the first offer they're given and do not negotiate. how do you make sure you're erp earning what you're worth and when should you ask for more? 56% never asked for a raise, even negotiated. >> it's amazing. and the reason they haven't asked is because they are afraid. salary.com did a piece of research and found that about half of all people say, they're too scared to ask. 15% said that they're afraid they're going to be fired if they ask. they also asked employers the question. do you know what percent of employers said they'd fire people for asking for a raise? zero. if you don't ask, you don't get.
8:16 am
wrong way to go about it. >> absolutely right. the right way to ask is to know what you're worth before you go in and ask the question. go to a website called glass door.com, where you can figure out what somebody with your skills, your experience, should be paid, and then go in with a list. on paper, not your phone. on paper, these are the things i've done for the company. these are the doors i've opened. this is the business i've brought in. this is the money that i've saved you. i deserve it is not a reason to get a raise. you have to actually list what you've done for them. leave it behind so they can review it. and if they tell you the timing isn't right or that they can't give you money, know what you want instead. >> that was our next point. timing is kind of everything. sometimes, an employer says, look, you are a great employee, but there is nothing i can do. i don't have it in my budget. >> right. in that case, say, okay, how about letting me work from home one day a week?

leonardo dicaprio plays hugh glass, an explorer across the wilderness and his quest for revenge against a fellow explorer. he endures sub zero temperatures, unforgiving elements. in one of the film's most talked about scenes, a vicious bear attack. it was shot on location far from the comforts of a hollywood studio. what you see on screen is raw and, oftentimes, real. >> was there ever a moment when you thought, why did i do this? why did i sign up for this? >> literally, everyone felt that a few times a week, yes. i'm not going to lie, it was one of the -- it was probably the hardest, you know, films, professional things, i've ever done, for sure. >> one of the things you do in the film is actually eat a real bison liver. i wanted to believe that that was a prop, but it was real. why did you push yourself to do that?

think, boy, what a lazy performance. you take that extra step. why? >> the native american actor that i was working with, hisarthur, and he was eating raw bison flesh during rehearsal. they gave me this pancake thing authentic to me. i wanted the real thing. it was this giant liver that was incredibly disgusting. my reaction is very much up on screen, which is a nauseating one. >> fair to say, you've had your last bison liver? >> i'll never do that again. never do that again. >> there's another scene where you crawl inside the carcass of a horse. i just kept thinking about the theme of will to live. watching this film, there were ten times i would have just said, forget it. i'll lay down and give up. how did you tap into that in your character, that absolute relentless will to live?
8:27 am
the first time, i said, my god, the perseverance of the human species, our adaptability, the ability of life to keep pushing forward in all adversity is amazing. it's kind of displayed in this movie in a way i haven't seen in a while. because we were trying our closest to emulate these people's journeys. >> did you actually crawl inside the horse carcass, or please tell me there was a set piece. >> yeah, there was a set pete. >> thank you. i don't think i could take it. >> reporter: something that wasn't a set piece, dicaprio's beard. >> how long did it take to grow? >> four months or five months. but then i kept it for like a year and a half. i lived with that thing for a long time. >> seems to take on a life of its own. >> it became like a partner, like a life partner. >> reporter: now, all eyes are on dicaprio's chances during
