"early today" starts right now. good morning. the east coast continues to dig out from this weekend's historic storm that brought record snowfall to much of the area. at least 14 states got more than a foot of snow with parts of west virginia getting an amazing

from holding practice. both of new york city's major airports broke records. laguardia got nearly 28 inches, and jfk international was hammered with 30.5, breaking the old record by more than 4 inches while central park was one-tenth off the previous record. nearby, newark, new jersey, on the other hand was one-tenth above the city's previous record while farther south along the jersey shore several areas experienced record flooding with chunks of ice flowing with the water. and the town of north wildwood was flooded with half a foot more water than during superstorm sandy. the town's police share this picture of a rescuer carrying a little girl after her home was flooded. federal government offices in the nation's capitol will remain closed on monday after getting 20 inches of powder. no word yet if there will be a round two of yesterday's epic snowball fight at dupont circle, but it's a pretty good bet the obama family dogs bo and sunny

playing in the snow. 30 miles west the washington redskins probably not happy. the roof of their practice facility collapsed under 34 inches of snow and 50-mile-per-hour winds. virginia governor terry mcauliffe attributed 1,200 car accidents in his state to the storm. at least 30 people are dead as a result of the weather, mostly from car crashes but also from heart attacks while shoveling. also one person got hit by a plow. in north carolina a 26-year-old father of a 17-month-old was shot and killed while trying to help a driver who skidded off the road. sunday morning in connecticut a commuter train which didn't have passengers at the time hit a truck after its plow got struck on the tracks. luckily no one was injured, and amazingly the train wasn't damaged and was able to continue on its way. according to flightaware more than 12,000 flights were canceled due to the storm. and more than 1,300 flights are canceled today. nbc's edward lawrence is out in the streets of washington with

edward, are you all dug out? >> reporter: we dug out just a little bit. i'm calling this the big dig. tens of thousands of people from the suburbs of maryland to the outskirts of new york city are having to deal out. we are still dealing with 20 inches of snow. other folks still have to deal with 30 inches of snow on the streets. the story turns to dig out. >> the roads are okay. they are open and flowing. a lot of mess out there. >> reporter: at least 30 deaths are blamed on the storm, many from traffic accidents and others from heart attacks related to shoveling the snow after it fell.

some neighborhoods still buried because plows can't get there yet. >> our second floor window completely covered in snow. >> reporter: rescue crews responding to emergencies on streets with two feet of snow. they lose minutes when every second counts. the mayor of baltimore could not give a timeline. >> given the conditions of many of our streets i believe it is safest for all citizens to minimize traffic. >> reporter: it is flooding not snow causing problems in new jersey. residents in washington, d.c. are making the best of a cold, uncomfortable situation. this is the first time the same storm dumped more than 19 inches of snow on washington, d.c. and new york city at the same time. historic super bowl 50 is set. the two number one teams going head to head in a battle of old versus young. the defending champs battling from behind, tom brady throws one of his two picks on the day.

favorite. the presidential race may be getting a little more crowded. according to reports, former new york city mayor michael bloomberg is mulling over a bid as an independent, even having advisers draw up plans for his campaign. the 73-year-old billionaire has contemplated running in the past but always declined to do so, saying he didn't think he could win. speaking on "meet the press" hillary clinton doesn't think the former mayor needs to jump in. >> the way i read what he said is if i didn't get the nomination, he might consider it. well, i'm going to relieve him of that and get the nomination so he doesn't have to. >> all right. >> meanwhile "the boston globe" officially endorsed clinton for president. she'll have one last chance to make a national pitch along with the rest of the democratic field at tonight's democratic forum before the iowa caucuses just one week from today. as donald trump and the rest of the gop field continue their fight for every last vote in the hawkeye state, nbc's kristen

meteorologist bonnie schneider joins me for the forecast. >> we are taking a sigh of relief. west virginia the blizzard of 2016, 42 inches. other major cities impacted. we are looking at a lot of snow for jfk as well as dulles and into baltimore, as well. keep in mind that we are watching for the snow not to stick around. we are seeing milder temperatures in this region to help to improve things a good portion of the way. as we can see we are watching for other improvements in the forecast, as well. here it is. we have snow in parts of north and south dakota as well as minnesota. watch out for mountain snow building. that will be good news to some skiers. minneapolis light snow showers changing into heavier. beautiful day in los angeles.
