the olympics yesterday. it was a great day to stay inside and watch it. too hot to be inside. another hot one today. so, again, hang outside and watch the olympics. 103 at noon. 108 at 4:00. we're going to talk about what we're expecting coming up. and brand new this morning, it was something you saw briefly a few minutes ago. that was the final moments of check it out. [ explosion ] >> reporter: there it was. that explosion taking place around 2:00 this morning. it's only 4:30 now. this is really fresh. in fact, as we opened up the program, you just saw the flashing lights of the police activity still there making sure that everyone is safe. and we also had one in june. so this is the one that's on your screen right now that takes us back to june.

room for more convention space here in las vegas. and in case you're just now looking on your tv set, no worries. because this only happened a short time ago. we'll have many more of these moments throughout the broadcast. >> anchor: we're good at these things. >> anchor: yes, we are in las vegas. >> anchor: 4:32. now happening today. a group of nine people will vote on a plan to restructure the county school district. it would give principals more control, including money for your child's education. it's planned for 9:00 this morning in downtown las vegas. those around the valley have had the chance to talk about the idea to reorganize the school's largest district. it will give more parents and principals more control of education of their children at the local school. a lot of people argue that the district is just too big to handle all of the students here in the school district. and if this group votes for the

it would then move on to the state board of education. for its approval. >> anchor: michele is going to join us. there's been bad reporting on this town that sounds like we're going to break up the fifth largest district in this nation. the local schools will have more control over the principals. michele will have more in awhile. a local guy who had been of the boys and girls club in town is supposed to make a court appearance. he's on your screen right now. his name is willis brown and he was arrested last week. in fact, that's his mugshot. he's 44 years old. he's accused of having inappropriate relationships with as many as three teenagers. the details about that inappropriate behavior not being made known to us not at this point. maybe in open court that will

to the southern highlands last week. they found two more victims and quickly made an arrest. we're all over this developing story. stick with news 3. a big step forward for medical marijuana. what some are calling a miracle drug. the plant. the drug enforcement agency has announced they're going to open up cultivation of marijuana i don't know if many people out there knew that. right now the only marijuana that can be used for research has to be provided by the university of mississippi. it's been that way for decades. so they hope by allowing different types of the plant to be used by scientists, they'll be able to figure out advancements in medical marijuana faster. and a local couple whose son uses medical marijuana, they want to see more research as soon as possible. >> we're kind of blindly giving

that it's helped him. but there hasn't really been in depth concrete research over the years. that's what we need. >> anchor: the dea made that decision to end the monopoly on research last week. you may have heard that. it's having impact for local families. at 4:35, different action in rio we're focusing on right now. you continue to see the torch burning. there's the flame in rio. that's a pretty picture. but we transition toan videotape that has a lot of people talking today. as the olympics continue, check out that fall. we had a couple of people injured as a result. that is a camera. and that is a studio camera that fell outside of the basketball arena. in total seven people injured. two people in particular taken away on a stretcher. tv global providing this footage we're seeing on our screen right now. it was a pretty large suspended

services right there on the scene. so they got attention immediately. some of the people just treated right there and then walked away. others, as you saw on the stretcher, that camera reportedly belonged to the olympic broadcasting services and it was hanging from wires in the middle of olympic park when all of a sudden it just came crashing down. here it is one more time. you saw how fast this happened. really no way to give anyone notice. just glad, dana, that we're talking minor that's a substantial camera. it could have been a dramatically different ending. 4:36 now. speaking of the olympics, team usa kept off the top of the medal stand last night and it was, oh, so close. especially in two specific events. simone biles going for a gold medal on the balance beam which she all of a sudden lost her balance and had to reach down to the beam and hold herself up.

finishing third in that event. she did get a medal. bronze medalist. and her teammate in this event, lori hernandez, also had a chance to win gold in this. she had a great routine but just fell short. so she wins the silver. they spoke with both ladies about the event. >> reporter: how do you feel about this? >> i'm disappointed in how i performed my beam set but not in the medal i got. i shouldn't higher. i'm the only gymnast out here that has competed as many times as i have. >> reporter: this is your first individual medal at the olympic game. when you did your dismount, did you think to yourself i think i got something here? >> yes. i mean, i've been training so hard and so i'm glad i just did the routine i've been doing in practice. i have no regrets. >> anchor: so did you know simone biles will go for gold tonight in the floor exercise

they are expected to finish 1, 2. you never know what is going to happen. now we take you to the women's 400 meter. there she is. allison competing for the united states. maybe her final event of the olympics ever. that's a possibility. she got edged out at the finish line right here by that woman from the bahamas what dove across the finish line narrowly edging out alex felix for the gold. so allison felix gets the u.s. female in track and field ever with seven overall medals. she was disappointed she did not win the gold last night. but she'll be on the today show later on this morning. here is a look at the medal count. team usa with 75 medals. they are now 29 medals in front of china. 26 gold for the united states. and new 3 digital taking you on the road to rio.

hurricane sandy. as they continue i'm catherine cortez masto and i approve this message. it's a simple question. in washington, has congressman joe heck been standing up for you? heck voted ten times to defund planned parenthood. he even tried to shut down the federal government in order to eliminate funding for planned parenthood. and heck's against a woman's right to choose and supports overturning roe v wade which would allow states to criminalize abortion.

you'ref0r1 manmade tragedy. we're talking arson. authorities have arrested the man they say is responsible for all of the flame going on. it's just awful destruction out of northern california. there is the man they've arrested. they say he is directly responsible for all of the damage. and you're continuing to see it burning all the way up the hill. it's already consumed so ma this is a 40-year-old man. they say he's being charged with 17 counts of arson in connection with this clayton fire is what they've dubbed it. look at this. look at some of these charred out structures. this has been burning now for days on end and already it's consumed some 4,000 acres. wiping out at last check 175 structures. but that's even a rough estimate because it has just been so darn devastating. officials say that they are

fullest extent looking to seek justice and what firefighters are calling a horrific crime. 4:46 now. some damage reported after multiple tornadoes spotted east of indianapolis. fortunately no injuries reported. but dramatic footage on your screen right now of at least one of the funnel clouds. damage reports include buildings. they were either damaged or destroyed because of this along with tree limbs. trees were downed america. but fairly unusual for indiana. they do get tornadoes there obviously but not as often as you would get a little further south. >> and look at the juxtaposition. this is a natural disaster. there's no way that you can stop that from happening. but the fire, it's hard for me to tell the story because you cannot believe what tragedy is associated with that. and i know the guy hasn't been prosecuted. but if it turns out he is responsible for setting that fire, how do you seek justice in

the tornado. and we are your weather authority. you were saying that 95% of all tornadoes on the planet happen here in the u.s. >> anchor: in north america. >> anchor: north america. >> anchor: well, i mean, probably more of them happening here in the u.s. than in canada. but still the statistic is 95% in north america because we -- we have the setup that produces the kind of storms that make tornadoes. and the rest of them, a couple in europe, australia and lately we've seen video out tornadoes. here in las vegas also pretty rare occasion for us. as we take a time lapse look on the cadence camera from yesterday, a lot of blue sky around the area. beautiful conditions if you're looking out the window. if you're sitting outside watching the olympics. but it was hot and it was breezy out there. the sun going down making for a very pretty picture. i think we'll see a couple of clouds as we're waking up this morning. looking at another sunny day and very warm temperatures.

>> reporter: the race could go both ways. at 4:50 today marks the 39th birthday of the death of elvis presley. as you can see, already thousands are making a pilgrimage to grace land, his estate to pay tribute. and another group actually joining in this year. and looking at the scene from the signs on your screen, memphis is apartheid. demonstrators with the black lives mat m up to the state. activists saying they're upset about the economic disparities across the city of memphis. the protest mainly peaceful but a local affiliate did capture a couple of people getting arrested. grace land was picked because it's one of the top tourist destinations within the city of memphis and a national tourist destination because it was home of elvis presley. grace land is currently in the process of investing money into
