reaffirming to its allies in the east that provocations from north korea will be met with serious consequences. how is the international community reacting to this test today? >> reporter: good morning. a triumphant announcement claiming the successful test of a nuclear warhead. there is, of course, no way of verifying that claim, but based on the seismic reaction, 5.3 maud blast. a source in south korea defense ministry told nbc news that the initial estimates for the explosive field were 10 kilotons. what does that mean in plain english? according to one analyst, that's smaller than hiroshima or nagasaki, but it would rip the heart out of the city. there are growing fears that kim jong un's regime have made significant advances. the pentagon slamming this as a serious provocation.

calling for north korea to fully give up its missile and nuclear programs. the same statement from nato this morning. even china. pyongyang's main ally criticizing that test. authorities in japan, russia, and china are monitoring the area for radiation. nothing found just yet, but this is the -- treated as a serious cause for concern. the bigger question is what the international community can and will do in response. clearly, sanctions and world condemnation have not been enough to deter north korea from pushing ahead with now the fifth nuclear test. back to you. >> lucy cavanaugh in london. also new this morning, a massive rescue operation over the french alps has been deemed a success. dozens of tourists, including a so-year-old child, were brought safely to the grountd. they spent a cold can night at 10,000 feet in the air. it's also one of the most climbed mountains in the world and also one of the deadliest.
