"we were getting ready to redeploy to afghanistan and they were like hey with the extent of your brain injuries, not only are you not going to be a senior leader, you're not going to be in the army anymore." landen eventually had to medically retire and spent a few years going from hospital to hospital around the country. eventually he made his way to sioux city in decembmb 2013, where he lives with his s fe aprel l d daughter brianna today. "todd is an amazingly y rong man im very veryroud of him." landen has had more than 20 surgeries and counting after being struck by 12 roadside bombs. and even with all the injuries, landen says he would be serving now if he could. a heroic statement from someone who's s contributions to the country will not be forgotten. >> withthanden's disability, there were a f f things that needed to be done to the homebuilder's association of greater siouxland started the "landen project" as part of the project for patriots, a non-profit helping make housing more accommodating to veterans. as part of the project, there will be 700 square feet added to the landen's home. the remodel will include a lift, customized cupboards that provide landen with better access and bigger bathrooms. some siouxland high schoolers got a rare opportunity... one that's usually meant for seasoned jonalists. ktiv's brianna clark takes us to spirit lak iowa where some presidential candidate carly fiorina. presidential candidates are spending these next crucial months campaigning across the country. they're being interviewed by both national and local journalists. but thanks to one siouxland teen, a couple of high school journalists are getting a chance to interview one of the republican candidates. nat: thanks so much for being here day.... thanks for r ving me! carly fiorina made e special apaparance at spirit lala high school in iowa on thursday, after a littleleersistence by senior jacob voss.

"i actually sent an email to one of their staffers, who referred me to another person, who referred me to another person," says jacob. who got him in contact with the right person. "i actually wasn't sure that it was going to happen, then when it did, i was pretty excited," says jacob. jacob, along with newsbreak anchor merabeth heinitz, got together with their journalism class and created a set of quesesons. nat being a business woman to now being a presidential candidate. is there something that spaaked thatat intetest. well'd say it's more of a process an a moment. jacob and merabeth have interviewed a number of people for journalism class, but different than the rest. who's racking," says merabeth heinitz, junior at spirit lake high school. but once the cameras started rolling, these two journalists felt right at home... "for just a group of high school journalists they asked really good questions. these kids are enjoyed it. they did a terrific job," said gop candidate carly fiorina.

presidential candidate up on her feet to do a little 'end of the show'ance with their journalism lassmates. in spirit lake, iowa. brianna clark. ktiv news 4. >> after her interview, carly fiorina made her way to the clay county fair grounds in spencer, iowa. there she spoke to a crowd of about 100 people... sharing why she would be the best candidate for president. she says town hall meetings, like this one, are a great way for her to get out and meet people face- to-face. "i want to talk to people about their frustrations," says carly fiorina. "because, you know, the majority of ameririn's think our polilical system and our government is completely broke, and i agree with thehe i'm running for president because i think we need a different kind of leadership in the oval office." after her visit to siouxland, fiorina was set to continue her campaigning in the des moines area. the population of zebra mussels in some of the iowa great lakes continues to grow. steve schwaller from kuoo radio joins us now to tell us what's being done about it. steve?

sheila, there's growing concern as the population of zezea mussels in at least some of the ioio great lakes is quickly growing. it's especially noticeable on boat hoists that have been remed this fall from east lake okoboji. the matter was a topic of discussion at this week's spirit lake city council meeting. councilman kevin bice told fellow council members he's seen numerous hoists that were completely covered anywhere they were below the water line. the concern for the city is protecting the intakes for the water treatment plant, which are located in big spirit lake. city attorney/admi nistrator greg owens told the council a project to do that continues t t move forward as quickly as ssible. owens added the city will be applying for a grant through the iowa department of natural resources revolving fund to help pay for the project... "the goal on that project as well is to, if everything goes smoothly and gets approved, to get that project out for bid early in the first part of next year."

undedeay either next sprininor summerer steve,e, are other r tities that pump their drinking water from the iowa great lakes looking at similar projects? e cities of milford and wahpeton, along with central water which supplies drinking water to the cities of arnolds park and okoboji, have already installed zebra mussel mitigation systems on their intake structures, which are located in west lake okoboji. tomomoow, siouxland women n ll "go red" in the fight against heart disease and stroke. the "go red for women luncheon" will be taking place at the marina inn conference center in south sioux city. almost 800 people are expected to attend the event sponsored by the american heart association. this is video from last year's luncheon. theheart disease is the number one killer of women in siouxland. the "go red luncheon" kicks off tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. still to come...

a surgeon from norfolk, nebraska was able to save the hand of an injured man this summer. and, three months later his patient talklk about the procedede. benjamin witkowski was a passenger on a jet ski when a rope cut off his hand. dr. tristan hartzell performed the surgery at faith regional health services. the doctor says it went perfectly. while his hand may be reattached, benjamin still has about two more years of therapy to go. tonight at ten, we'll bring you more on the successful surgery. renovations to a piece of sioux city sports

history have finally reached the nish line. ththtrack at sioux city's memorial field was in such bad shape, i iwas condemned last spring. six months later, bishop heflan's newly resurfaced track just needs the lanes painted, and will be ready for the upcoming track season. with the newly renovated facility only a few blocks from the school, getting to practice will be much more convenient for heelan track athletes. "it's going to be big from a standpoint of last year, our kids weren't able to practice at our field," said bishop heelan athletic director, jason platt.
