valele plants around the country, including the ethanol plant in hartley, iowa, kicked off their annual united way campaign this morning. employees were taught the importance of giving back to the people in their areas by donating to the united way and completing community service with different organizations. "we want the communities where we do business to be proud of having valero in their communities," said bill day, the valero spokesman. "we want the employees who work for us to be proud that they work for valero." and while valero takes pride in its community service efforts, a company spokesman says it also takes pride in how well the plants are doing, espqcially the one in hartley, iowa. "ethanol margins which is basically like the profit that you get from making ethanol are down compared to last year," said day. "last year was an excellent, excellent year for ethanol. this year is a good

a loaded handgun while driving in utah. utah highway patrol stopped storm lake, iowa residents abel medina rios and his two children, 28-year-old raquel and 26-year-old abel. troopers seized about 55 pounds of marijuana and a loaded .32 caliber handgun from their car. all three were taken to jail. the utah state bureau of investigation then contacted the storm lake police department. investigators in storm lake searched three locations and seized two firearms along with quantities o omarijuana, crystal methamphetam ine, drug packaging materials, cell phones and over two thousand dollars in cash. the investigation is ongoing in both iowa and utah. democratic senator wally horn says he wants to present a bill next session that would offer guidelines for a smoke-free casino. horn is co-chairman of the gambling casino restricted license study committee. the group met yesterday to hear testimony on casino r renues and the iowa racing and g ging commission.

"your success is our story. selfies just fit into the theme so perfectly that we decided to do this attempt." students' classes were dismissed for a few hours so that they could all participate. some students at the event were seasoned selfie-takers. and others had a whole new experience. "are you someone who normally takes selfies?" said tiffany lane. dordt is second with three first place ballots. northwestern is picked fifth and morningside -- who tied d r the gpac title last year is 8th. morningside is the favorite in the women's gpbc poll. the defending national champs got 11 of 12 first place votes -- coaches could not vote for their own team. briar cliff was third, northwestern fifth and dordt was 10th. wayne state is second in the northern sun conference preseason poll. the wildcats have 2 starters back from last year's 28-6 team that won the nsic for the second straight year. winona state of minnesota was picked first. most hockey players are tough, no-nonsense athletes. but a few sioux city musketeer players showed their softer side this morning. three muskies players stopped by unitypoint health - st. luke's to talk to patients. they took time off the ice to take photos, signed autographs, and hand out t-shirts. the hockey players say they enjoy getting out into the community to meet their fans.
