after hammering the south for several days. nbc's janet shamlian is in pensacola against for us today. janet, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. this is the storm that doesn't want to quit, pummeling the south for days, and it's been setting rainfall records as it marches to the east. no letup this morning to the heavy rains, pounding winds and floods brutalizing the gulf coast, from pascagoula to pensacola, red flag warnings. the wind and rain unrelenting. the rain is punishing, but more than that it's the wind. gusts exceeding 35 miles an hour. the type of winds you would see in a tropical storm. >> across the south, dramatic scenes as the storm moved through. part of the causeway to dauphin, alabama, had to be shut down, waters streaming over the sea wall. >> i looked out from the balcony and saw it out here, and i'm like, whoa, that's getting a little close for comfort. >> reporter: in baton rouge rescuers pulled 20 elementary school students to safety when a

caught on cell phone video captured by a student at spring valley high school in columbia, south carolina. it shows a school resource officer confronting a female student for allegedly disrupting class. >> are you going to come with me or do i have to make you? >> he asks her to come with him and after she refuses several times the confrontation escalates. it's unclear what led up to the incident, but a second video shot by another student shows the officer pulling the girl to the ground and throwing her across the floor. the officer identified by the richland county sheriff's departrtnt as deputy ben fields declined to be interview pending an investigation. >> the sheriff fully understands the seriousness of this incident and will address it once again when the investigation is completed. >> reporter: according to the sheriff's office it was only after the student refused to leave the classroom that the officer was called in. on facebook and on twitter, the

after your law enforcement personnel were treated to lunch in ida grove monday.y. odebolt arthur battle creek ida grove high school invited officers from sac and ida counties to a "law enforcement appreciation meal" during lunch hour. also invited were state troopers from t(e cherokee and denison posts, d-c-i agents, and fire marshals. the principal says the students wanted to show appreciation to law officers and students say it was fun to see another side to those officers. "it's nice to get to know them. a lot of people think like police officers oh they're for tickets and they just get a bad rap sometimes i guess. it's really nice to sit down and talk to them, they're people too," said junior, cole veltri. officers say they y nt students to know that no matter what, law enforcement personnel are for them.

it is a little hard to watch, we should be honest with you. spring valleyyhigh school, columbia, south carolina. a school resource office, a sheriff's deputy locally there. it's under investigation after aggressively confronting a female student for allegedly disrupting class. students captured the disturbing incident on their cell phones. >> are you going to come with me, or do i have to make you? >> so you can see the officer flipping her backward in her chair there. it's unccear what led to that incicient, but do you hear the officer ben fields ask the student to come with him after she refused multiple times. that confrontation. >> oh, that hurt. that angle right there is on her head. >> she could have been so injured. >> like on her neck. >> the teacher in the classroom asked the officer to come in

the aclu and rich land black 2 calling it egregious and unacceptable and the sheriff says they fuuy understand the incident and they will addree completed. the school superintndent put out at statement writing student safety and always will be the district's top priority. the district will not tolerate any actions that jeopardize the safety of our students. pending the outcome of the investigation, the district has direct the that the school resource officer not return to any school in the district. the student was detained after the incident and later released to her parents. the charge was disturbing the classroom i think is how they define it had. again, we don't know the context before the video, but it's hard was appropriate. >> if there's a context that makes t tat an understandable incident, it is important and imperative that the sheriff's department give that context because unless that student was armed and there was immediate danger to al's point, to matt lauer's point this morning as
