would cancel trump's plans to speak on school property. but, the board couldn't legally take action, since it wasn't an agenda item. this group says trump is a "bully" and doesn't belong iowa schools...refe rring to his rhetoric toward hispanics. this petition points out the district's "zero tolerance" policy toward bullying. but, that relates to students and school events, but this is a community event to which the policy does not apply. it's important to note west high school has a large hispanic population, in fact, more than 33 percent of the students are hispanic. one of the big reasons members say they are more sensitive to the issue, is because they're saying some students have been harassed and are concerned about the safety of fellow students. to ensure safety, there are extra local law enforcement on hand. but that cost including renting out west costs $3,000, but the trump campaign is picking up the tab so taxpayers aren't paying a dime. sheila? several candidates are making stops in siouxland on friday. martin o'malley will hold an

partnership that hires veterans after they complete active duty. the designation allows the area to compete more aggressively for military members pursuing positions in iowa. those with the organization say they want to make sure all of iowa's veterans are fully employed. they also want to recruit other military members from other states. today, one siouxland community received that home base iowa designation and governor terry branstad was there to present it. the ceremony was held at the veterans memorial at city park in sheldon, iowa. branstad was there to present o'brien county with the home base iowa designation. northwest community college was also recognized as a champs school at the ceremony. the community, including the city park, were lined with american flags in anticipation of the exciting designation. branstad says he wants all veterans to feel welcome to come to iowa and find a job. "you can see the tremendous support for veterans here. we're here at this beautiufl park in sheldon. it's a memorial to service members and they've got a huge avenue of flags so this is a great setting for this and i'm very honored to present the home base iowa presentation to o'brien county

and to salut this community for all they're doing for veterans," said iowa governor, terry branstad. tonight at 10, we will have more on the designation ceremony and why governor branstad is behind it. senator joni ernst weighed in on congress's two-year budget plan today. the deal sets government funding for the next two years. it also pushes the nation's debt limit to 2017. senator ernst said she's disappointed with what she's seen in the deal. especially regarding cuts to crop insurance. she says those serving on the agricultural committee were not consulted about that cut. "some of the other concerns i have with this two-year budget deal is, yes, there are some cuts in some areas but instead of applying, those cuts, those savings to our deficit and our debt, we use it on additional spending," said u.s. senator joni ernst. "i don't think this is what iowans want." ernst says she will vote against

deal will pass. farmers had another big week of harvesting last week until rain slowed things down on friday. the weekly report from the u.s. department of agriculture says that as of sunday, the corn harvest was 73 percent complete in iowa. 57 percent in nebraska and 60 percent in south dakota. the soybean harvest was 92-percent complete in iowa, 90 percent in nebraska and 96 percent in south dakota. today, reaction from local medical experts about a new study linking cancer to certain kinds of meats. the alternatives you can put on your plate to live a healthier life.

red meat and processed meat increase the risk of getting cancer, according to a world health organization study

released yesterday. these meats include things like hot dogs, bacon and sausage. the report says processed meat is classified as having the same impact as smoking and drinking. a 50 gram portion of processed meat daily increases the rick of colon cancer by 18 percent, according to experts. the study was done by the international agency for research and cancer, the cancer agency of who, and reviewed work from 10 countries. with t t new study, experts s e weighing in on how people can lower their risk of cancer. ktiv's tiffany lane spoke with a siouxland dietitian who shares how to eat better without completely having to eliminate meat consumption.

"it's the same impact," said cindy gates, an oncology dietician at the june e. nylen cancer center. "the more processed meat you eat, the more potential you have for colorectal cancer, just like the more cigarettes you smoke, the more you might increase your risk for lung cancer." processed meat refers to meat that has been transformed through salting, smoking and other processes to enhance flavor or improve preservation. this includes hot dogs, ham, sausages and corned beef. red meat refers to all typse of mammalian muscle meat, like beef, veal, pork and lamb. su "research shows that people should not eat more than 18 ounces of cooked red meat a week. that's the same ize as about ssx decks of playing cards." "there'e' no bennfits to eating processed meat," ssid gates. "of course with red meat, it's a good source of protein. it's a good source of iron. it's just the problem is, sometimes we eat too much red meat." gates says the key thing is moderation. "just to be for breakfast, instead of having three slices of bacon, have one slice of bacon for breakfast," says gates. "if you're having sausage on your pizza, put less sausage." she also says meat is not the only source of protein.

when the iowa high school football playoffs start wednesday, three metro teams will be in action. sioux city east, bishop heelan and sgt. bluff- luton will play in the round of 32. the warriors and crusaders may be headed for a head to head showdown in class 3a. sgt. bluff-luton handed heelan their only loss of the season, 28-21, back on september 25th. sbl lost their opener at lewis central and d ve won eight in a row since then. the warriors are hosting boyden-hull, rock valley in round one, while the crusaders host spencer. earlier this season, sbl coach justin smith and heelan coach jerry steffen talked about what it takes to win in the playoffss. "we've talked a lot about taking the next step and having a little grit," said sbl head coach justin smith. "i think that's the thing we were lacking a little bit last year. pretty talented, physically ok, but we lacked that kind of grit. you can't necessarily coach that all the time, the kids gotta take control of that and thjey're doing a good job right now."
