because we have such a high demand for tool and die, sheet metal fabrication, welding, hvac, electricians... you name it,"," saididd wallace, iowa workforce velopment deputy director. sioucity is the largest community in iowa to receive the designation. sioux county is officially the 24th designated home base iowa community. community leaders, members of the public and governor terry branstad came together at the sioux county courthouse for the presentation this afternoon. home base iowa provides veterans with resources to help them find employment and integrate themselves in iowa. one vietnam war veteran and sioux county board of supervisors member says he would have liked to have similar opportunities when he returned home from service. "i came home in october," "i'm not getting my teaching job back until the next fall. i would have been looking you know. what are the incentives? i mean, what an awesome program. you're in the military, you come home and there's incentives to do something. it would have been esome." local business leaders say veterans are ideal candidates to hire for the many job openings in the county. "the dependability and the

quality," said benji van donge, workforce development manager at interstates construction in sioux center. "they understand what it takes to get a job done. they understand teamwork and i think that is so important because that's really what makes up sioux county and the businesses we have." speakers at the event say they are not only looking for local veterans to join the workforce. they also encourage veterans from areas and other states to take part in the program. while governor branstad was at the home base iowa designation, protesters gathered outside. it was an attempt to encourage the governor to defund planned parenthood at the state level. skylererheeler, who's running for the diststct 4 seat in the iowa house says branstad hasn't kept his promise of cutting funding to the organization that provides abortions among its many services. he says, in 2010, the governor said the state should not be funding groups like planned parenthood. "i have respect for governor branstad and i just want to remind him that we need to protect the unborn and we need to do what we can and this is a battle we can win and i just want him to go through with his promise." wheeler says he believes

years to complete. the company announced wednesday a fiber-optic- enabled network capable of one gigabit per second internet speeds. and it will be at no additional cost to schools already using their services. "rather than purchasing a book kids are carrying around, everything now is on their laptop,"said chad janzen, superintendent at rock valley schools. "and frankly, most of those textbook resources are all online and they make them much more user friendly for students." su "premier communications ceo doug boone says the one gigabitit capacity helps enhance students' educations." "maybe it's t t way that they can't have an educational program in their own schools and so they want to use online video, distance learning for their own capabilities," said doug boone, premier communications chief operating officer. "but that's really just- it opens up the world to any kind of content. that they really want to have." school leaders say the one gigabit capability also helps push their science, technology, education and math initiatives. "our kids are in our classroom or in our stem room and they're hopefully going to be in a position where they can have real life situations presented to them by companies such as premier, interstates, trans ova genetics and some other companies that we're working with

to where our kids are put in real life situations," said sioux center community schools superintendent pat o'donnell. the increased internet speed does not only apply to schools, but will be available to 13-thousand customoms in the area. in sioux center,r,owa, tiffany lane, ktiv news 4.>> boone says the one gigabit capability is currently being used at 16 schools in the sioux center area. there are three more schools that are in the process of converting over as well. south dakota farmers are making progress getting late-season crops in the bin. the agriculture department says the soybean harvest is virtually wrapped up at 96 percent complete. nearly two-thirds of the corn crop is harvested. and the sorghum harvest also is about two- thirds complete. pasture and range conditions statewide are rated 50 percent good to excellent. the iowa high school football playoffs start tonight. sports director brad pautsch is live with a preview.

if you didn't know, there are tunnels that run underneath parts of briar cliff university. leading up to halloween, walking through those tunnels can be a bit more spine-tingling. that's because a student club turns them into a haunted house.

elan hall and stretch across c cpus. this years tunnel has a circus theme totot and is open from 7 to 10 through frfray. organizers incorrated a family hour starting at 6 there's no age limit for that so it could be for adults who spook easily too. "the president of briar cliff came through last night and she said this was one of the scariest tunnels that she's experienced so far," said dillon beckmann. "just [with] all the clown rooms, sharp turns and dark parts." the tunnels cost three dollars to walk through. they're open on halloween from 6 to 9. halloween is only a few days away. with the holiday coming up, there are a few tips to keep in mind to keep everyone safe. make sure you choose costumes that are safe. which can mean making sure a mask doesn't obsure your child's vision or sticking caution tape on a costume. you should also make sure

welcome back live to sgt. bluff-luton high school. it's the first round of the iowa football playoffs. in class 3a, 8th-ranked sbl is home against spencer. these same two teams just played last friday in spencer. sbl shut-out the tigers -- in the rain -- 20 to nothing. it was the eighth straight win for the warriors, who lead all of class 3a in rushing yards with more than 3- thousand. sbl has six players averaging more than seven yards per carry. before the season, the warriors knew their ground game would be good. "that's kind of what coach smith wants to do. he always wants to run first and if ofther things open up, he does them," said matt george. "but we have lots of different ways we can run the ball with both our wings and the slots and with me." "as always our goal is to get to state," said jacob shultz. "we want to play in the dome. it's something that's always talked about at sgt. bluff and hopefully we can accomplish that this year." spencer comes in at 5 and 4. kickoff is at 7 o'clock. you can see all of tonight's playoff matchups at the bottom of the screen. this is the last year that iowa will have 32 plalaff

teams in each class -- t ty'll go b bk to 16 next year. west sioux x uld have made the playoffs, in any case. ktiv's mark freund is live in hawarden, iowa, with more. there are only four unbeaten teams in class a heading into the playoffs. one of them - is west sioux. the falcons will be a trendy pick to make it to the uni-dome, which is a place they've never been - with an offense that's scored 40 points or more six times this season. west sioux opens their playoff run at home against maple valley-anthon-oto - a team that's had a resurgence this season. the rams won just one game last season - but finished the regular season 5-and-4. but mvao will likely have a tough time scoring on a west sioux defense that hasn't allowed more than 14 points since week 3. sportsfource is on the road with west sioux head coach ryan schwiesow. coach, this is a nice string of defensive games for your falcons - allowing no more than 2 touchdowns in 6
