defense secretary ash carter visited the de- militarized zone between north and south korea today. speaking on the south korean side, carter said it was important to keep trying to resolve the issues surrounding north korea's nuclear program through six-party talks. he said the u-s is continuously urging north korea to refrain from provocations or any action that may heighten tension, and

to follow through on the denuclearization process demanded in the six-party talks. a libyan judge today postponed the trial of former libyan dictator moammar gadhafi's son, al-saadi gadhafi. al-saadi remains behind bars on murder charges for the 2005 killing of a former soccer coach during his father's rule. this was his second trial hearing. the judge postponed the trial to december sixth. a russian airliner crashed saturday in egypt, killing all 224 people on board, including 25 children. egyptian officials say both black box recorders have been recovered from the wreckage. and as n-b-c's bill neely reports from cairo, russian investigators have arrived there to try to unlock the mystery of why the jet went down.

in a barren desert, the mangled remains of a plane that was carrying two hundred and twenty four people. their clothes scattered, their cellphones ringing in the debris. no one survived to answer. many were found still strapped to their seats. twenty five were children. this was the metrojet plane - an a3 twenty one, 18 years old. it took off at five fifty one in the morning from the egyptian tourist resort of sharm el sheikh bound for st petersburg, russia. after just 23 minutes - and at 31,000 feet - it dropped suddenly and slowed dramatically, before disappearing from radar and crashing. "communication has been lost" he says. but russian officials had no idea why. the airline quickly insisted human error was not to blame. "our pilot was very experienced" she says, our aircraft was in full working order. so we don't know what caused the crash". at st. petersburg airport, terrible scenes, as relatives learned that everyone on board was dead. egyptian officials hinted early on they believed a technical failure caused the crash. the crew apparently complaining of engine trouble several times in the past week. the pilot in the final minutes reportedly requesting an emergency landing. (neely on camera 1:36 - 1:52) one shockwave from this disaster - some airlines are now reviewing their flight paths. two european carriers, citing security, say they won't fly over this area of egypt until the exact cause of this crash has been found. back to you. >> coming up on news 4 at 5

in all aspects of the game. sophomore q-b joel lanning won his first career start - throwing for 188 yards and a touchdown. but the defense was huge - holding texas to 204 total yards, the third fewest yards allowed in a big 12 game in program history. it's the first shutout for iowa state since 2013. head coach paul rhoads after the win - pure emotion. iowa state rushed for 238 yards against texas - and has averaged 225 yards per game their last 6 outings. a key part of the offensive line opening those holes - is former cherokee standout brock dagel. dagel, a three-year starter for the cyclones, went through season-ending knee surgery last year. but he - like the entire team - is savoring the big win over texas. "it means so much," said dagel. "it's been a long time coming, and it was just a big team win. it's awesome." "we just focused on our preparation, and just focused on beating texas, honestly. nothing much you could do, really." iowa state is now 2-3 in the big 12. the cyclones are on the road at oklahoma on saturday. iowa is still undefeated after saturday's 31- 15 win over maryland. the hawkeyes are 8-0 for the second time in program history - and for the first time since the 2009 season - when they started 9-0.

nebraska suffered their worst loss of the season saturday, a 55-45 setback to purdue - who was winless in big ten play entering the day. in his first career start, husker quarterback ryker fyfe threw four touchdowns - but was also picked off four times. purdue quarterback david blough threw four touchdowns against a leaky husker secondary. nebraska is now 1-4 in big ten play. "it was really a game about giving them too many opportunities," said head coach mike riley.
