men. in 2005, he was part of the raid to capture and kill saddam hussein's sons. a traumatic brain injury ended his military career. landen's injuries, that have caused him to o ve more than 20 surgeries and d unting, have created some hardships. projects for patriots, a new non-profit, launched the "landen project" to help renovate landen's home to help him get around easier. today, there was a groundbreaking for the renovations at their home in sioux city's northside. "it'll be interesting," said todd landen, a retired army first sergeant. "i think with the service dog coming and a lot of the new features that all these upgrades will provide, i'm kind of getting anxious to see how much more independent i can be." the renovations will include a 440 square foot addition to the back of the house and addition to the garagegeo that cars can fit t after an elevator is built. there will also be easier access cupboards in the kitchen. projects for patriots board members, along with home

and volunteers were there to help celebrate. "this is such an exciting day because we've moved to that next step," said steve struthers, president of the projects for patriots board. "we've been doing a lot of the background work and getting things going with all the things for financing and things like that to finally get to this point." the landen project is the first under projects for patriots. organizers say they hope it leads to more projects to help other veterans down the road. project board members say the renovations will cost about 125-thousand dollars. 70 percent product and labor has been donated for the house. they say the project should be completed by no later than february first. and they're hoping to have everything done sooner so that the family can move in as early as possible. matt and sheila? if you wouldldike to support the landen family, there will be a fundraiser for the landen project tomorrow. it will be at the orpheum theatre in downtown sioux city. there is a social at 5:30 p-m. starting at seven, there will be a special

despite morning clouds and fog, we saw enough sunshine and a powerful enough south wind to send a lot of our highs back into the 70s today. changes start to come our way tomorrow. a chance of a shower or thundershower will be with us tonight, especially in western siouxland. then a chance of thundershowers will continue tomorrow with a cold front moving in that will allow highs to get into the 60s in the morning but then fall during the afternoon. police have released the names of two people who died after the

in a high-speed crash. they are identified as 34-year old jonas rouillard and 28-year old autumn flowers. both are from sioux city. they were taken to mercy medical center, where they died of their injuries. popoce say rouillard was driving the cacaat a very high rate of speed on 25th street, tuesday afternoon, when the car smashed into an s-u-v that was backing out of a driveway near morgan street. the car then hit a tree and another vehicle, flipping onto its roof. nobody else was seriously injured. the car was reported stolen last thursday. police say the vehicle was owned by phonmalay xayabanah of sioux city. the incident remains under investigation. a hoskins man is getting probation fovandalizing a northeast nebraska cemetery. michael svatos was sentenced to 36 months probation. svatos was arrested in june, after he was caught on surveillance footage knocking over gravestones at the trinity cemetery near hoskins. the cemetery had been the subject of a number of vandalisms over the course of a

year before svatos' arrest. svatos had been held in the pierce county jail while awaiting sentencing. svatos pleaded no contest to felony mischief back in september. two of the three men convicted for their roles in an atm heist from a bank in northwest nebraska were sentenced today. 23-year old jacob christensen and 22-year old cody murphree of norfolk were each sentenced to 30-60 months of jail time in wayne county district court on wednesday. the pair plead guilty to felony theft and felony criminal mischief charges in september after being arrested for stealing an atm from the elkhorn valley bank in hoskins in late june. the third suspect in the case, 24-year old david rhodes has also been convicted of the same charges but will be sentenced in december. a northwest family caught with large amounts of marijuana in utah is now back in storm lake, iowa to face charges. utah highway patrol officers stopped abel medina rios and his two children, 28-year-old raquel and 26-year-old abel back on october 19th. they seized about 55 pounds of

a loaded handgun from their car. investigators in storm lake searched three locations and found drugs including crystal meth and two more guns. the family members face several drug charges. the weather has slowed south dakota's corn and sunflower harvests, though both remain on an average pace. the agriculture department says that farmers have been hampered by rain, snow, cool temperatures and strong winds. sixty-nine percent of the sunflowers are harvested, compared with the average of 65 percent. the corn harvest is 79 percent complete, near the 77 percent average. still to come... beeting the streets: a more environmental ly friendly way to get ice off the roads in and... holiday music already? it's only early november, but station is already playing

if you work hard, and you do your part, you should be able to get ahead and stay ahead. but the republicans... they want to go back to letting the super wealthy call the shots. they don't stand up for equal pay for women. they don't support paid family leave. they don't even really support refinancing student debt. we've got to get this economy working for the vast majority of americans, not just for those at the top. that's what i intend to do as president.

(matt) the norfolk city roads will try to beet the icy roads this winter by using an organic juice for de-icing. (sheila) beet juice will be mixed with salt brine to break down ice on city roads. the norfolk, nebraska operations manager says this mixture is more effective than traditional salt brine, which has been used in recent years. "well what the beet juice does for us is it allows us to use the salt brine at a lower temperature. if we put in a 10% mix of beet juice, it's good until 5 degrees, where if we just had the salt brine itself, it would be good until about 25 degrees" this mixture follows a trend in nebraska of using a more effective way to keep roads safe this winter. traditional salt that is used to break down ice can cause rust on cars and potholes to form on roads. dooley says this new solution attacks both of t tse issues. while the beet juice will cost more up front, at about $115 per truck, it will save money in other areas,

such as future road repair and environmental cleanup. (sheila) christmas time is here, again! (matt) well...not exactly. but, you'll hear the sounds of the season on a sioux city radio station. on tuesday, sioux city's "varie station," kg-95, became "your christmas station." the station's program director says listeners demanded the station start playing holiday tunes, again. rob powers says the response has been far beyond what he has seen before. "i'll be honest with you, in years past i don't know if we've had as many people, if that many at all, begging for the holiday music," said powers. "this year it has been amazing. the folks have been asking us for the last couple of weeks when we're going to start playing christmas music and of course we just jumped on it." (matt) the shift to holiday music-- three weeks before thanksgiving-- may bring joy to some. but, others may not want to start celebrating christmas in november. we want to know what you think! "my only two observations are that, a, they don't mean a lot right now," said ferentz.
