(sheila) and, i'm sheila brummer. ten years ago, work started on the first of a new breed of naval combat ship... the freedom-class littoral combat ship. (matt) for the last 19-months, workers at a shipyard in wisconsin have worked to build the newest l-c-s, the uss sioux city. last month, i got rare access to the shipbuilding process... and to see the ship, up close.

the sioux city. so, right now, the crew can simulate real-life situations... "they're not going to let us take the ship underway if we're not ready," ralston said. ...like navigation and propulsion. four water jet engigis push the sioux city through the water like a jet ski. "one of the most challenging things to learn is the very complicated engineering plant,ralston said. "we want to be able to operate that as safely and effectively as we can." the crew can also prepare for worst-case scenarios. "making sure that when we do get the ship, that if something does go wrong like fire or flooding, we're able to handle whateveveis thrown at us,","alston said. the ship starts as steel. that steel is welded into "modules" like slices of bread in a loaf, the modules are lined up aboard the ship. "this is gonna be a special platform," said cmdr kevin ralston. "we're going to be able to do a lot with it. we're going to find special things that this ship is capable of doing." those steerable water jet

memeioned eliminate the need for a rudder and propellers. so, the sioux city can sail shallower waters than most navy ships, which makes the sioux city ideal for coastal missions, like antisubmarine warfare and surface warfare against small boats. nats of welding for now, ralston, and his crew, can only look forward to the day the sioux city is theirs, sailing the high seas supported by an entire community. "it's amazing the progress t tt you see on a daily basis,""said lston. "they're definitely turning ththship out very quickly, and we're seeing some nice progress. that day is approaching rather quickly." >> by the numbers, the u.s.s. sioux city is nearly 400-feet long... that's longer than a football field! the ship weighs 35- hundred metric tons. when you do the math, that's neaeay 8-million pounds! that said, the sioux city hcan still reach a top speed of 45-knots, or 52 miles per hour. when deployed, the sioux city will carry a crew of 95. nebraska- native who will call the sioux city "home." it's the second part of my special series of reports, "building the u.s.s. sioux city." over the last few weeks, we've helped you get to know todd landen. he's an iraq war veteran, who was injured in 2008. landen is a retired army first sergeant who served for 21 years. in late 2013, landen and his family moved to sioux city. most recently, landen served with the 101st airborne division, known as the "no slack ttalion". a traumatic brain ininry ended his s litary career. landen's community is helping make his house io a "home." landen's injuries required more than 20 surgeries. and, he needs some special additions to his house. "projects for patriots", a new non-profit, launched the "landen project" to help renovate landen's home to help him get around easier. "it'll be interesting," said todd landen, a retired armrm first sergrgnt. "i think with the service d d coming and a lot of the new features that all these upgrades will provide, i'm kind of getting anxious to see

how much more independent i can be." the renovations will include a 440 square foot addition to the back of the house,e,nd an addition to t t garagagso that cars can fit after an e evator is built. the e nden project is the first under projects for patriots. work should be complete by february first. you would like to support the landen family, there will be a fundraiser for the landen project tomorrow at the orpheum theatre starting at 5:30 p.m. at seven, there will be a special screening of "the hornet's nest." it's a documentary about the 101st airborne division that went into afafanistan. e event is free, bututonations are appreciated. (sheila) you can also lend a helping hand to military men and women by turning your halloween candy into cash. (matt) ktiv's sam curtiss visited a local dentist's office where kids pocketed a few extra bucks so someone else can enjoy their candy.

"laffy taffies, twizzlers [and] hershey's," said amanda wink. that kids have... wait for it... given away. "the kids t a dollar per pound of candy," said amanda wink. and this kid sure liked getting a buck. it's part of a candy buy- back program. some dentists do it after halloween. it's the third year for lilly family dentistry. "600 pounds total through the last two years," said wink. these pictures show what t tt much c cdy looks like... and the ways you can pose with it. but, that sugar doesn't go to waste. it's donated to the 185th air fueling wing, which sends it overseas to active soldiers. "we just thought it would be great for the kids to also know where there candy is going," said amanda wink. "it's really special to them that they get a bunch of cards from kids and they get a bunch of candy that they cannot get all the time," said allyson hirst. allyson hirst is a first-time candy donor. "a bunch of gobstoppers and

they also send reading material to accompany the treats. hers read "thank you for serving our country, love allyson hirst [of] sioux city, iowa." amanda wink figures they've mailed around 150 cards in the first two years. and, it might surprise you to learn that they've never had a kid d mplain about tradingngn their candy. a lot of our highs back into the 70s today. changes start to come our way tomorrow. a chance of a shower or thundershower will be with us tonight, especially in western siouxland. then a chance of thundershowers will continue tomorrow with a cold front moving in that will allow highs to get into the 60s in the morning but then fall during the afternoon. the future landscape for transportation in siouxland is taking shape. and it could use your input. those plans expect the highway 20 and interstate-29 projects to both be done in less than five years. the siouxland interstate

metropolitan planning council drafts the transportation outlook which would go through 2040. once those two big projects are complete, reps at simpco say the 18th street, as well as the gordon viaduct projects are next up to tackle. also listed are expanding bike trails and alternative transportation options. there will be a public meeting on december 18th. and you can voice your opinion. we'll tell you where and how on ktiv dot com. police have released the names of two people who died aftft the stolen car theyey were in was involved in a high-speed crash. they are identified as 34-year old jonas rouillard and 28-year old autumn flowers. both from sioux city. police say rouillard was driving the car at a high rate of speed, on 25th street, tuesday afternoon. the car smashed into an s-u-v that was backing out of a driveway near morgan street. the car then hit a treeeend another vehicle, flipping onto its roof. . nobody else was seriously hurt. the car was reported stolen lt thursday. a judge has sentenced a hoskins, nebraska, man to 3-years probation for vandalizing a

cemetery in northeast nebraska. michael svatos was arrested in june after he was caught on a surveillance camera knocking over gravestones at the trinity cemetery. the cemetery had been n ndalized several l mes in the year before svatos' arrest. back in september, svatos pleaded no contest to felony mischief. a judge has sentenced two of three men convted for their roles in an atm heist from a siouxland bank. 23-year old jacob christensen and 22-year old cody murphree of norfolk were each sentenced to 30-60 months of jail time in wayne county district court on wednesday. in september, theheair pleaded guguty to felony theft and felony criminal mischief charges after being arrested for stealing an atm from the elkhorn valley bank in hoskins in june. the third suspect in the case, 24-year old david rhodes, has also been convicted of the same charges but will be sentenced in december. a northwest family caught with large amounts of marijuana in utah is now back in storm lake, iowa to face charges. . utah highway patrol officece stopped abel medina rios and his

two children, 28-year-old raquel and 26-year-old abel back on october 19th. they seized about 55 pounds of marijuana and a loaded handgun from their car. investigators in storm lake searched three locations and found drugs including crystal meth and two more guns. the family members face several drug charges. a shocking twist surrounding the shooting death of an officer in illinois. the massive manhunt for three alleged cop killers turned into what police today call the ultimate betrayal. despite morning clouds and fog, we saw enough sunshine and a

in connection withthhe case. the obama administration says it is continuink a review of the proposed keystone xl oil pipeline. that's despite a request by the project's developer to suspend the review. a state department spokesman says there's no legal requirement for officials to do that. transcanada asked the u.s. to delay consideration of the pipeline, which could put off a decision until the e xt president takes office in 2017. votes by omaha tribe members are couraging tribal leaders to continue looking into the marijuana business, and allow recreational use on its northeast nebraska reservation. tuesday, voters overwhelmingly approved measures regarding recreational use, medicinal use and a proposal to grow industrial hemp. the referendum doesn't legalize marijuana. it simply provides the tribal council with guidance. had to go on the road for round two. bloomfield was the host -- the 6-3 bees scored 80 points in their first round victory. the winner would be in the state quarterfinals . bloomfield was fired up for this second-round game. but that ended quickly - guardian angels scores early and often - tanner hass - headed upfield - in and out - and to the house for a 44 yard touchdown run - blue jays with a quick lead. a few minutes later - off a turnover - eric klitz bowls into the end zone from a few yards out - 14-nothing g- a-c-c. then hass goes back to work - getting the handoff and going down the far sideline for another score - 20-zip after that touchdown run. how about one more time - this time on the screen pass - shaking defenders and getting gone - hass had 191 rushing yards and 5 total td's. guardian angels rolls, 74-6. fourth-ranked and undefeated creighton, at home against number-10 clarkson-leigh. the bulldogs score right away - brook baller - taking the handoff - and showing off the speed - 31 yards
