apartment complex for a domestic violence call. officials say throughout the day, the suspect fired random shots into the approach path used by pilots at the san diego international airport, prompting the f-a-a to stop all flights from landing. after several hours of negotiation, the suspect was finally taken into custody. the suspect has not yet been identified. all airport traffic has resumed normal operations. a knife-weilding suspect went on a stabbing spree at a central california univeristy. the suspect stabbed four people on the campus of univeristy of california, merced yesterday morning. the four victims were transported to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. the suspect was shot and killed by police. veteran illinois police lieutenant joe gliniewicz's wife and son are under investigation in the wake of news that the officers death is believed to have been a suicide. melodie and d.j. gliniewicz have not been charged with any crime.

investigators into the officer's september 1st death called it a "carefully staged suicide." officials said gliniewicz faked his own murder to help conceal "extensive criminal acts, including stealing and laundering money from a police program for young people. the officer's family released a statement, just hours after the official announcement .... saying that the day was another of "deep sorrow" and that the family was cooperating with the investigation and would not comment at this time. the search for survivors went on overnight in the rubble of a collapsed building in pakistan. at least 16 workers died when the factory under construction fell down on top of them. t-v footage showed rescuers and residents scrambling to remove the rubble. state-run pakistani t-v said rescuers transported 45 injured to different hospitals in the area. emergency teams used heavy machinery to pull bodies and survivors out of the ruins of the building. as of late yesterday, dozens of people remained trapped under the rubble.

industrial area on the outskirts of the city of lahore, in the east of the country. the cause of the collapse was not immediately clear. a judge has sentenced a hoskins, nebraska, man to 3-years probation for vandalizing a cemetery in northeast nebraska. michael svatos was arrested in june after he was caught on a surveillance camera knocking over gravestones at the trinity cemetery. the cemetery had been vandalized several times in the year before svatos' arrest. back in september, svatos pleaded no contest to felony mischief. a judge has sentenced two of three men convicted for their roles in an atm heist from a siouxland bank. 23-year old jacob christensen and 22-year old cody murphree of norfolk were each sentenced to 30-60 months of jail time in wayne county district court on wednesday. in september, the pair pleaded guilty to felony theft and felony criminal mischief charges after being arrested for stealing an atm from the elkhorn valley bank in hoskins in june. the third suspect in the case,

24-year old david rhodes, has also been convicted of the same charges but will be sentenced in december. a northwest family caught with large amounts of marijuana in utah is now back in storm lake, iowa to face charges. utah highway patrol officers stopped abel medina rios and his two children, 28-year-old raquel and 26-year-old abel back on october 19th. they seized about 55 pounds of marijuana and a loaded handgun from their car. investigators in storm lake searched three locations and found drugs including crystal meth and two more guns. the family members face several drug charges. votes by omaha tribe members are encouraging tribal leaders to continue looking into the marijuana business, and allow recreational use on its northeast nebraska reservation. tuesday, voters overwhelmingly approved measures regarding recreational use, medicinal use and a proposal to grow industrial hemp. the referendum doesn't legalize marijuana. it simply provides the tribal council with guidance.

mexico's supreme court set the stage for legalization of marijuana yesterday. mexico's supreme court ruled four-to-one that prohibiting people from growing the drug for personal use is unconstitutio nal. giving the green light to growing marijuana for recreational use was a landmark decision. mexico has a bloody history of conflict involving drug cartels. the court's vote does not legalize marijuana consumption in mexico, but more rulings of the same kind could set a legal precedent. outside the court, people who want to change mexico's drug laws celebrated the decision by lighting up joints. opponents also gathered outside the court, calling for regulation. production and sale of marijuana is illegal in mexico. but in 2009, the country made it legal to carry small amounts of marijuana, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine. the future landscape for transportation in siouxland is taking shape. and it could use your input. those plans expect the highway 20 and interstate-29 projects to both be done in less than five years.

the siouxland interstate metropolitan planning council drafts the transportation outlook which would go through 20-40. once those two big projects are complete, reps at simpco say the 18th street, as well as the gordon viaduct projects are next up to tackle. also listed are expanding bike trails and alternative transportation options. there will be a public meeting on december 16th. and you can voice your opinion. just go to ktiv dot com to find out the details. over the last few weeks, we've told you the story of todd landen. he's an iraq war veteran, who was injured in 2008. landen is a retired army first sergeant who served for 21 years. in late 2013, landen and his family moved to sioux city. most recently, landen served with the 101st airborne division, known as the "no slack battalion". a traumatic brain injury ended his military career. landen's community is helping make his house into a "home." landen's injuries required more than 20 surgeries. and, he needs some special additions to his house.

"projects for patriots", a new non-profit, launched the "landen project" to help renovate landen's home to help him get around easier. "it'll be interesting," said todd landen, a retired army first sergeant. "i think with the service dog coming and a lot of the new features that all these upgrades will provide, i'm kind of getting anxious to see how much more independent i can be." the renovations will include a 440 square foot addition to the back of the house, and an addition to the garage so that cars can fit after an elevator is built. the landen project is the first under projects for patriots. work should be complete by february first. if you would like to support the landen family, there will be a fundraiser for the landen project today at the orpheum theatre starting at 5:30 p.m. at seven, there will be a special screening of "the hornet's nest." it's a documentary about the 101st airborne division that went into afghanistan. the event is free, but donations are appreciated.

"well what the beet juice does for us is it allows us to use the salt brine at a lower temperature. if we put in a 10% mix of beet juice, it's good until 5 degrees, where if we just had the salt brine itself, it would be

investigation last spring. according to the report, 72 out of the 122 pro sports contracts that were turned over contained what they called "paid patriotism" activities. the obama administration says it is continuing a review of the proposed keystone xl oil pipeline. that's despite a request by the project's developer to suspend the review. a state department spokesman says there's no legal requirement for officials to do that. transcanada asked the u.s. to delay consideration of the pipeline, which could put off a decision until the next president takes office in 2017. the norfolk city roads will try to beet the icy roads this winter by using an organic juice for de-icing. beet juice will be mixed with salt brine to break down ice on city roads. the norfolk, nebraska operations manager says this mixture is more effective than traditional salt brine, which has been used in recent years.

it allows us to use the salt brine at a lower temperature. if we put in a 10% mix of beet juice, it's good until 5 degrees, where if we just had the salt brine itself, it would be good until about 25 degrees" this mixture follows a trend in nebraska of using a more effective way to keep roads safe this winter. traditional salt that is used to break down ice can cause rust on cars and potholes to form on roads. dooley says this new solution attacks both of these issues. while the beet juice will cost more up front, at about $115 per truck, it will save money in other areas, such as future road repair and environmental cleanup. the giant evergreen that will be the centerpiece of rockfeller center this holiday season has started its 80-mile journey from upstate new york to manhattan. the 10-ton tree was hoisted onto a flat bed trailer for transport into the big apple. it will make its debut in rockefeller center tomorrow. the 83rd annual tree lighting ceremony will be held on december 2nd.

help make life easier for a siouxland veteran who suffered a traumatic brain injury in iraq. the non-profit group "projects for patriots" kicked off "the landen project" for todd landen wednesday. they'll be adding a 440- square foot addition to his six city home and an addition to the garage so there's room for cars after an elevator is installed. the project should be done by february. landen's injury forced him retirerom a 21-year career w wh the army. a hoskins, nebraska man has been sentenced to 3 years probation for vandalizing a cemetery. michael svatos was arrested in june... after he was caught on a surveillance camera knocking over gravestones at trinity cemetery in hoskins. the cemetery had been vandalized several times in the year before his arrest. in september, svatos pleaded no contest to felony mischief. the obama administration is rejecting a request by trtrscanada to suspend i i review of the proposed keystone x-l oil pipeline. a state department spokesman says there's no legal requirement for officials to do that.

look ma, no hind legs! this spotted skuku was caught on a wildldfe cam showing off its handstand skills. it happened in arizona's saguaro national park back in the summer. this week, the u-s national park service shared the video for our amusement. the trick is actually part of the animal's defense mechanism. like other types of skunks, spotted skunks spray a nasty scent at potential predators. but the park service says before spraying, spotted skunks also will sometimes do a handstand and try to intimidate any possible aggressors.
