says this mixture is more effective than traditional salt brine, which has been used in recent years. jim dooley / norfolk city operations manager "well what the beet juice does for us is it allows us to use the salt brine at a lower temperature. if we put in a 10% mix of beet juice, it's good until 5 degrees, where if we just had the salt brine itself, it wououd be good until about 25 degreeses this mixture follows a trend by the overall state of nebraska, using a more effective way to keep roads safe this winter. dooley says that salt is a natural enemy of concrete, which is why this mixture poses many benefits. "well what's nice about adding beet juice to our brine is just that 10% makes it 30% more effective, so by doing that we are using less salt on our street which is good for the concrete, gogo for metal, and good for the while the beet juice will cost more up front, at about $115 per truck, it will save money in other areas, such as future road repair and environmental cleanup. >> that was jake higgins reporting from norfolk. dooley says the beet juice salt brine combination is also less corrosive to cars than salt. from beets to eggs.
