at least four people - including one child - died at the scene and at least 14 others wereransported to the hospital...eigh t were in critical condition. witnesses say some of the motorists involved were trapped inside their vehicles. no word yet on what caused the crash or where the van was from. brazilian rescue workers dug through mud and debris yesterday in a challenging search for victims of massive mudslides from two collapsed dams. brazilian authities confirmed a second death a raised the number of missing people to 28. the torrent of water and mud tainted with mineral waste from an iron ore mine traveled as far as 60 miles from where the dams broke. nearly 400 people are taking part in the search operations in southeastern brazil. they have beenensing specially traiaid dogs and special equipment to locate victims downstream from the dams. though finding survivors is growing less likely, officials said they did not rule it out. of the 28 people listed as missing, 13 were mine workers. the rest were residents of villages below the dams. the cause of the disaster is

still under investigation. over a dozen vehicles are underground after a large sinkhole opened up in a mississippi restaurant parking lot saturday night. rescue crews say 15 vehicles were swallowed by the 50-foot wide sinkhole in the i-hop parking lot in meridian... which is along the mississippi- alabama border. witnesses say they heard several loud booms and the power was knocked out before the hole opened up. no injuries were reported. crews say they are investigating what caused the sinkhole but believe e could be weather- related sincncthe area received over 10 inches of rain in the last two weeks. the funeral for a six- year-old boy fatally shot during a police pursuit in louisiana will be held today. family and friends say the funeral for jeremy mardis will be held at 1-30 this afternoon in hattiesburg, mississippi. six-year-old jeremy was fatally wounded when two marksville, louisiana policecefficers were allegedly pursuingnghe vehicle of h h father, , ris few, tuesday and opened fire on the s- u-v nearly half a dozen times.

and face second- degree murder charges and attempted murder charges. louisiana state police are still investigating what led up to the shooting. yesterday, beth shalom temple in sioux city opened its doors to siouxlanders of all faiths for the annual latke party. the festivities included traditionalaloods like potato latkes. and there was something new to the menu thiy year-- matzah ball soup. congregation members made thousands of matzah balls for this special day. out of all the guests that attended...one man had a very special connection with the celebration. ktiv's tommie clark has the story.

"nats of singing" sam's club held their fifth veteran appreciatiti event where they invited veterers from all around siouxland.d. they came out for breakfast, sang the national anthem, and heard from fellow soldiers. a big part of the ceremony was the wall of honor-- full of flags and dog tags honoring each fallen iowa veteran. on that board, they're 28 fallen soldiers from sioux city alone. "i think it's great for us to show our support of the troops. i m melf served in the nanaonal guard. at sam's club we appreciate everything our troops do. we want to put them first. we support them in every way we can," said

sioux city sam's club manager, stephen black. one local veteran had a huge hand in planning the event. the vietnam veteran participated in the flag folding ceremony and says it's a wonderful tribute. he says he's proud to help out and if they can honor just one veteran, they've done their jojo "we need to encourage other people to take part in any and all veteran activiiies that they can get in because these people need to be honored. it's not as much us, the living veterans, it's these...so these are the ones that we need to honor," said vietnam war era veteran and sam's club membership coordinator, charlie mortensen. the wall of honor will continue to stay at sam's club until tomorrow. as we get ready to celebrate veterans day on wednesday a special event will take place tomorrow to help military members and their families operation engage america is a non-profit group that provides support, awarness and resources to veterans and active service members. they're going to have a get-together athe american red cross s morrow. .

way of showing and sharininmy faith with others. i've sat for years in a church pew and felt like i was accomplishing nothing. i felt like god had something more for me to do," said safe water international minstries or "swim" founder, greg stout. while on a mission trip, stout realized how unsafe the drinking water was. so, he decided to do something about it--creating a nonprofit ministry that makes chlorine p pducing units. "one of these units that volunteers have been working on can purify water for an etire community." stout's simp unit breaks salt water down into a chlorine solution, which can then be used to disinfect water. volunteers did every step including cutting wires, molding and glueing containers, soldering them, and finally testing them out. "we're just understanding that we step out of our own lives and try to imagine how life is for others we can so easily do this and just a few of us can help so many others," said lifelong unitetemethodist church of le mars member and volunteer, lie roy. volunteers say they feel that they're doing some good in the world and touching other's lives from a distance. "it provides people with a hands on opportunity to be involved in mission and ministry and to make a difference in people's lives in a very tangible way," said united methodist church of le mars pastor, john battern. once those in developing countries receive these units, they'll be able to produce their own, clean, drinking water. in le mars, iowa...tommie

cheney, and defense secretary donald rumsfeld. it's beginning to look a lot like winter in the high sierra as a blanket of white covered the mountains over the weekend. about seven inches of snow fell yesterday. ski resorts, l le boreal mountain resort, say this is the earliest in almost a decade they've been able to open their entire resort to skiers and snowboarders. some snow-gazers stopped by to catch a glimpse of the white crystals for the first time this year. but for motorists and truck drivers, snow and ice mean dangerous conditions on the roads. meteorologists are calling for the e ow and cold weather to continue through today. they expect snow levels in the sierra will drop to as low as 45-hundred feet. on the eighth day of the investigation of the russian plane crash in egypt.. one investigator said they are "90 percent sure" the noise heard in the last secoco of a cockpit recordrdg was due to a bomb. the f-b-i agreed to take a modest role in the investigation. and in russia, bells of st. petersburg cathedral tolled 224 times - one for each

"we know that they're there for us at bad times as well as good," said d ck bosquet. in south sioux city, nebraska,a, sam curtisis ktiv news four. that dinner was made possible by numerous donations throughout businesses in the community. a new study reveals meat -- and how it's cooked -- could increase the risk of kidney cancer. researchers at m-d anderson cancer center compared the diets of newly diagnosed kidney cancer patients with a group of healthy adults. the cancer patients ate more meat than their peers -- as well as the toxic chemicals produced when meats are fried or grilled at high temperatures. they also discovered some people were genetically more susceptible to the effects of f these chememals. giants in the sky. four new balloons were unveiled yesterday during the annual macy's thanksgiving day parade test flight. the new balloons were inflated and flown outside for the first time. the four new characters are angry birds' red, dino, ice age's scrat and his

(sot: mom (covered)) "it turned from little red rashes to ulcerated blisters. when the blisters showed up it was very painful." hand, foot and mouth disease usually affects infants and children under 5, according to the centers for disease control. it's spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing, or contact with blisters or feces. and since it's highly contagious is no surprise that it spread at this elementary school. "why does it take an upset parent that thinks that this should've been done in the first place?" the health department says the school is not required to report the illness, although it has, and the school said it sent a notification out yesterday, which reads in part: "school district health professionals have consulted with montgomery county health officials and are actively monitoring the situation. children must be fever-free for 24 hours, without the use of fever reducing medication, before returning to school." a notice this mom wishes had come out sooner so she could've been prepared.

christmas" on the cups. and he's asking those customers to later post photos of those cups on twitter. feuerstein c cims the video has had more than 10- million views. starbucks says the cups are meant to encourage customers to tell christmas stories in their own way. toyota said it's dumping takata airbags that use ammonium nitrate because of safety issues. u-s regulators say that takata's inflators can explode with too much force and spray metal fragments inside cars injuring drivers. regulators have linked the inflators to eight deaths. all in honda vehicles. tens of millions of air bags have been recalled. toyota, the world's top- selling automaker, joins honda and mazda in ditching the inflators that have led to the recall of more than 40 million cars worldwide. american airlles suffered a computer glitch back in march that allowed 16-hundred customers to buy nearly- free tickets from certain u-s cities to china. word of the cheap tickets spread

here's a look k our top siouxland news stories this nday morning. the beth shalom synagague draws a packed house for its annual latke party. the feast on sunday featured the always- popular potato latkes and something new this year: traditional matzah ball soup. congregation members worked togther to make thousands of matzah balls for the meal. the annual celebration has special meaning to peter boe. he is a holocaust survivor and pastor at st. paul lutheran church. he was evacuated from latvia to germany when he was 5 years old and to america when he was 11. law enforcement officers and emergency personnel from dakota county are treated to a meal. the south sioux city knights of

columbususut on a free dinner saturday for the agencies. organizers say it's a way to thank them for their service. it's also a chance for veteran members to bond and share stories with younger members. the dinner was made possible through donations from dakota county businesses. people in developing countries around the world will be able to have clean, safe drinking water thanks to the efforts of zens of volunteers a aunited methodist church in le mars, iowa. they spent the weekend assembling units that purify water. "safe water international ministries" was founded by greg stout 15 years ago after a missionary trip where he saw how unsafe drinking water was in many countries. volunteers say they feel that they're doing some good in the e rld and touching other's liveve from a distance. a local group is putting on an event to help military members and veterans.
