their eyes tonight. really a feel-story and ktiv's sam curtiss is in studio with us. he was there for the moment today, sam. wrestling isn't a sport michael powell's mom says she expected her son to sign up for. after friends and some family sold him on the idea, he decided to give it a try. only a few weeks into it, he has no plans to tap out. with a hug from his mom "you can do this right?" asked trudy powell. and some last minute reminders. "this is all about a teaching league as well,","aid a wrestling coacac 1313ear-old michael powewe wrestles in his first match. "i was pretty excited," said michael powell. "i knew i could do it." michael goes three periods strong. "up, up, up," screamed rich wilmesherr. with mom anxiously cheering on her son. "come on michael," said trudy powell. "oh, oh." michael's up against two opponents, the one on the mat. the other autism. "he's never gotten up in front a crowd before," said trudy powell. "he usually lets everyone else take the show." and for two weeks that's what he did. the eighth grader at sioux city west middle school skipped

his first two matches of the three-week season grappling with nerves. "a student with autism, i never thought i'd see a student t me back and want to get involved with all the contact involved," said ch wilmesherr. thth190-pounder dropped d s first wrestling bout. but, remained optimistic. "nobody wins their first match," said michael powell. he's not the only one learning. its forced his coach to rethink his game plan with other athletes. "as a coach it made me stop and think about 'am i teaching them the exact proper technique' cause he'll do it exactly as i tell him," said rich wilmesherr. what he didn't tell him to do was wrestle again. confidence takes to the mat for another match. "to watch him grow in the last three weeks has wilmesherr. "i didn't know if he'd do it again but for him to step up and say 'yeah i want to' i think says a lot about his character." never forget this dada" said trudy powell. tonight, everyone who wrestled won. coach rich wilmesherr even riterated that's the big takeaway. michael does have one more meet before the season is over. wilmesherr did share one great sidenote with me. michael's such a happy kid all

at least two people have died in a fiery plane crash in akron, ohio. (sheila) the jet clipped a utility wire during its descent this afternoon and crashed into the building. the plane then hit an embankment beyond the building which caused a nearby house-- and the plane-- to catch fire. roberta porter/witness: "i was just driving down the road and i heard this noise. a plane just dropped out of the sky and veered to the left and plowed into the duplexes there. it was just a mass explosion. i was just so afraid for all those people

homes." no one was in the building that was destroyed, and there were no known injuries on the ground. fast food workers, and other workers who say they're underpaid, mounted their largest strike to date... to push for a hike in the minimum wage. walk os were planned in over 250 cities across the nation. the strikes were planned one year before the election to demand that local officials fight for a 15 dollar an hour minimum wage, and union rights. (matt) the minimum wage was one of the first topics raised during tonight's republican presidential debate, in milwaukee. donated food for the meal. the elk's club donated $2,000 worth of new winter coats. "mostly people know us as being the agency that helps connect military members and their we also have a significant service that we provide to veterans and that's what this is about," said american red cross executive director, tammy lee. the next event like today's will be held december 15th from 5:30 to 7:30 in the cross in sioux city. support siouxland soldiers presented an award today to students who are helping vetetens. the organization p pesents their "heroes on the homefront" award to organizations, schools and businesses w support troops in a major way. today, le mars community high school students received that award for their continued donations. they gathered food, hygiene items and care packages. "it's important for the young students to know how important their work is in the community and how appreciate we are of their help and supporting our troops," said support siouxland soldiers founder, sarah petersen. at the event today the students

brought a bus load of food, 40 care packages and 13-hundred- dollars to send the packages overseas. veterans day allows all of us to pay tribute, and honor, the sacrifice that these men and women make every day for our freedom. many serve their countriri in the military... and their communities asirefighters. today, veterans and current military members of sioux city fire rescue, were honored for theit service to our country. the international association of fire fighters organized the event. it took place at the flight 232 memorial, which sits in the shadow of the veterans memorial bridge. "we've traded in our combat boots for turnout boots and our fatigues for turnout gear," said sarah orwig, a firefighter for the sioux city fire rescue. "and our new mission is to serve the citizens of sioux city." out of sioux city's current 110 members, 25 percent have served, or are serving, in the united states armed forces.

the iowa department of criminal investigation is looking into the death of a man in calhoun county. (matt) around two this morning, the calhoun county sheriff was alerted to a home at 205 2nd strere in pomeroy. whenenhey arrived they fouou a man dead with a gunshot wound. so far law enforcers haven't made any arrests in the case. but, authorities say they the public isn't in any danger. investigators haven't released the victim's name. a sioux city man faces sual abuse charges involving a 13-year-old girl at a local hospital. investigators say on saturday night 20-

year-old alex anderson met up with the victim at the icu waiting room at mercy medical center. he then kissed her several times and put his hand in her shorts. authorities charged anderson with 3rd degree sexual abuse. officials at mercy medical center say their security staff was alerted about the situation and they called sioux city police. several people have rallied around a sergeant bluff, iowa, business, that's facing a complaint that it violated a county ordinance. leroy mcroberts trucking inc. is a carrier uck company. a few weeks ago, a neighbor voiced a complaint to the woodbury county board of supervisors that the business is an "eyesore". tonight, a representativ e of the company, as well as, nearly a dozen community members showed their support for the company during the supervisors meeting. supervisor matthew ung says the board may consider revising the ordinance in question. the outbreak affecting more than 100 people in iowa city since mid-july. the mumps is highly contagious and is spread through contaminated saliva... so the university of iowa is trying to put an end to it. students getting the shot will be the third round of the measles- mumps-rubella vaccination. nurses say the students actually had to get the fifit two rounds of the m-m-r vaccine to be enrolled at the ununersity. obese e ildren as young as 8 8 show e ely signs of heart disease. researchers used imaging tests to compare a small group of obese and normal-weight kids. they found that 40 percent of the obese children had thickened muscles surrounding the heart --- which could reduce the heart's pumping ability. some of the obese children also had other conditions such as asthma, high blood pressure, and depression. experts caution that heart problems during childhood could lead to more complicated health conditions in the future. around town and across america men are putting down their razors and letting their beards grow. and it's all for a good cause. november is a popular month to

going on. one is movember, and the other is no-shave november. movember raises money for prostate cancer and testicular cacaer among other healtlt issues. e goal behind no- shave november is to donate the money you'd spend on shaving related products to the american cancer society. dr. steve joyce with mercy medical center says it's all about awareness.
